Editorial review from Citysearch 7/31/2013

I have enjoyed Coachman's food for years, but last night the tasteless attire of the hostess seemed to affect my dinner. Her backless shirt with an ugly, ordinary bra underneath was far from classy, it was trashy! I can't believe management let her seat customers. Most diners I observed appeared to be disgusted. Let's hope she can find an entire shirt or at least a sports bra before her next shift. more

Soup AND salad AND full entree with bread/rolls AND always-full beverage AND desert ALL INCLUDED for once price. Service was splendid and good food (soup was superior). Not skimpy on food. more

Coachmans is amazing.... 2/20/2012

Is Coachmans a good restaurant? Yes, yes, the answer is yes. The decor is kitchey and fun, the food is super cheap and generously portioned, and the waitresses are all nice and efficient. That being said, if you are looking for anything more than what I would describe as decent lunch fare food, you might want to go somewhere else. The food is cheap for a reason people. But come on! The people watching you can do in this place is worth it, all sorts of characters walk in right off of State Street. And for the men out there, the place is full of waitresses that are kinda pretty, and kinda flirty, and kinda seem they could have interesting after work activities. I love this place! more

A local treasure 10/18/2011

Love this place, nice warm atmosphere. I own a place in marysville, Ca that is just like Coachmans, great food, big portions, warm friendly people. The breakfast is great. My co-workers and i have yet to have had a bad meal, and have yet to find a place that comes close to the service or quality. We plan on trying out lunch and dinner, and I'm sure the experience will be the same, and a review will follow. Thank you to the staff and family that owns Coachmans for making me as comfy here as I am in my own restaurant, while I work here, away from home. more

This is 50's diner food at its finest! My boyfriend had been coming her for years & on a recent visit to SLC, we stopped in for Chicken Fried Chicken. We shared the entire meal - its HUGE. Soup AND salad (go with thousand island, it works) crusty rolls, the crispiest chicken I've ever had, mash potatoes, gravy and green beans - YUM. Then Spumoni ice cream for dessert. I can't wait to go back. The decor is kitschy - old school Vegas. The service was excellent. loved it all! more

A once good place has deteriorated 7/3/2011

This place, purely and simply, sucks. I gather from many that it once was good, but not anymore. I have eaten there a few times during the past year as it is convenient and open late, and I was hoping that the bad food was just an aberration. I had a breakfast in which the eggs over easy were good although it came only with two eggs instead of the advertised three and I could not get the waitress's attention. The pancakes were repulsive lumps of doughy mess. On another occasion the fish and chips were salty, rubbery and inedible. I shall not go back more

Simply the best! 10/22/2009

My family had been going to Coachman?s for years in Provo. They closed it down years ago and I missed it. Then my sister told me about the one in SLC and it is just as good as I remember as a child. I see there are a few complaints on here about how it is outdated and the food is bad. Well I have this to say to the anal retentive few who left a comment, please go elsewhere and don?t ruin my Coachman?s atmosphere with your snooty arse! Sure the decor is outdated, but come on, it?s cool! Unique, no place is like it anymore. It takes you back to the days when people cared about each other, smiled and said hello. The most important thing about the atmosphere is it's CLEAN. Whenever we go we get great service, you can tell the owners care about their business. The food was superb, HUGE portions, way more than I can eat. Delicately seasoned meats, cooked juicy and tender. The rolls...oh the rolls are so good you could fill up on them before you even see your dinner. They keep them coming and with our family they disappear fast. Salads are fresh and homemade, same with the soup. No prefab frozen bagged soups here. This soup is the real deal, and it comes in a novel thing called a BOWL! Not a little dinky cup. Pretty much everything on the menu is worth having, I have not been able to try it all yet as they are so far away. This is a very good choice for an enjoyable relaxed meal anytime of the day. Those of you who like chain restaurants and are ok with mediocre food, and service laced with apathy would probably not agree with me.... Pros: Good food, Friendly service, Family owned, Nostalgic. Cons: Only takes cash more

Stumbled upon this great find 9/7/2009

We were a little leery about this place, seeing it from the street. The sign and building are really outdated, but I was intrigued by the fact it was advertising for pancakes and lobster. I love to find local places when we travel and try them out--why eat at an Olive Garden or something, you can get that anywhere? Well, we were not disappointed in this place at all. The selection on the menus is incredible--lamb, pork, crab, steak, sandwiches, breakfast...this place has it all! And I still can't believe you get soup, salad, potato, vegetable, drink, AND dessert with your meals. Our service was outstanding and our food was pretty much first-rate (I could have done without peas on my garden salad, and the soup wasn't anything to write home about). My husband got steak and lobster and I got the seafood platter and the value was much better than what you'd get at, say, Red Lobster...much larger lobster tail, King Crab instead of snow crab, not to mention two extra sides and a drink included. The restaurant's decor is VERY out-of-date, but it's sort of charming in its own way. The women's bathroom in particular was appalling--looked like a peppermint threw up in there. But it also contributes to a unique ambiance--Coachman's is definitely like no other restaurant I've been to, and in a good way. Great place. Pros: the selection, the prices, the value Cons: tackiness, no payment by credit/debit more

Its run by the Greek family of John Nikols for 49 years 6/30/2009

Coachman?s is a family-style restaurant and serves up heaping plates of comfort food and definitely is what the SL community wants and needs. Its run by the well known Greek family of John Nikols for 49 years making the restaurant the longest independent family own in Utah is known for its hearty portions, extensive children's menu and good, old-fashioned homestyle cooking. Staples on the menu include veal roast, fish and chips, fresh baked salmon , chicken fried steak, pastas , hamburgers, steaks, soups and country-style breakfasts served all day. I will described it as a casual, diner setting that appeals to truckers, anglers, business people, families, church-goers, seniors and the younger set. It is so exciting to know there is no one out there who won't like this legendary Diner. After being in the restaurant business for 30 years, myself I know that this family is committed to using fresh, quality ingredients offering an extensive selection of fine chops, steaks and freshest seafood delicacies. I admire Johns? Nikols tradition of making everything from scratch, including the breakfast pancakes and that is why is every ones favorite Restaurant. Bill Schwartz Pros: tradition of making everything from scratch, more

Great place for Dinner 6/30/2009

Our first visit was in August of '08 to celebrate a birthday. We were very pleasantly surprised at the number of choices on the menu. Two in our group ordered the pork chops and agreed that it would be very hard for them to ever order anything else from the menu. The chops were thick and juicy and soooo...tender! The rest of our party enjoyed their entrees as well. They serve sourdough rolls prior to your meal arriving. We enjoyed those and tried not to fill up on the rolls before our meals arrived. All meals were adequate servings for each of us. Everyone agreed that we wanted to return to enjoy more of their selections. We have returned several times since then. In fact, when we speak of going to dinner, my girl always mentions Write a review Coachmans. The staff has always been efficient and friendly. One of these days I will save room for one of their special desserts and we want to try the house specials. Pros: Best Food in Town more

We LOVE Coachman's! 3/26/2009

I found this place almost by accident and my husband and I have been back several times. We love the food and the service. The decor is pretty retro but with their awesome prices, who the heck cares? I'd write more but hubby and I are headed in for dessert now. :) more

no place like home 1/2/2009

Coachman's is the bomb! granted i may be a waitress there at nights. but i know the behide the sean action and i get to see the care and preparation that goes on with the food and service. Mike the manager really cares about all his customers and wants nothing but the best service. all the waitresses are smart beautiful women who are great at what they do. so if your not sure what to do for dinner tonight, come on in to coachman's, i suggest something off the dinner menu, you get soup. salad, rolls, a soda. and dessert with your meal. ask for Ashley and i will do my best to live up to the coachman's expectations. hope to see ya there! Pros: Great food, great service Cons: u didnt come in sooner more

this place is a dive 12/29/2008

the 'ambiance', service, & food is dismal. run the other way. don't even think about what goes on in the kitchen. Pros: none - run the other way Cons: everything more

Prompt, friendly and pleasant service. 9/25/2008

I first found this place one Sunday morning so I stop by to eat breakfast. I was seated right away into a table of a pretty waitress. She took my order and a shortwhile my breakfast is ready. The food is a lot and a pretty decent meal. I returned 4 times that week during our lunch breaks. The waitress did good service so she desevered a good tip. Cons: Thumbs Up more

Pretty awful 3/8/2008

After hearing some good things, I went there for breakfast with a friend. She had the swedish pancakes, and I had the french toast. First off, the service was awful. The waitress was slow and cranky. As was the woman at the front desk. And who in the year 2008 still doesn't accept debit cards? Instead, you have to use the ATM which charges an additional fee. Pros: Nothing. Cons: Service is awful, food is bad, prices aren't great. more

Try this unique and excellent eatery! 11/3/2007

The Coachman's has been one of our frequent breakfast, lunch and dinner stops for many years. WHY? Simply because it's very good food with large portions at a great price! Contrary to what some others have posted here, I've always found their service to be excellent as well. The comment(s) here about this place giving you the feel of dining with the mob are interesting, however the owner was NOT incarcerated! John and his wife are the owners, and one of their sons (who was working there) was found to have been selling contraband on the side out of the restaurant. This restaurant does, however, offer a distinct unique atmosphere along with the outstanding food and service. Incidently, one of my favorites is their marinated pork which offers a very delicious power surge of flavor! TRY IT! YOU'LL LIKE IT!! Pros: Everything Cons: Nothing more

Food might be good, I'll never know because the service sucked. 9/28/2006

Looking for a new place to eat, my girlfriend and I decided to try the Coachman's. The menu looked interesting and tasty but after sitting for 10 minutes with no sign of service pending (and it wasn't that busy), we got up and left. more
