Editorial review from Citysearch 10/24/2013

Awful service from both the desk and Kaplan, the head guy. Took stool samples because my dogs had worms. Was told that they only had a record of one dog even though my other dog has been in 3 times in 3 years. They then found her, but told me that she hasn't been in for over a year so she had to schedule an appt. she was in in February of this year. Did they tell me this because they are incompetent or dishonest? When I asked to speak to the head guy, Kaplan, he was aggressive, unhelpful, kept putting his Hands on me, and dismissive. This is my third problem with the group. I only went back after someone recommended Dr. Moire, who was good. I even have a letter of apology from Kaplan from a previous screwup. \r \r So please, do yourself and your pet a favor and go anywhere else. These people should be shut down. more

WARNING WARNING WARNING 10/7/2011

First of all, I find it extremely suspicious that most of the reviews are either disturbingly bad or very very good. The negative reviews are painful and seem honest, while the positive ones seem to be professional and fake. That said, my personal experience with Dr. Andrew Kaplan was horrific. All he cares about is his public image. HE KILLED MY THREE YEAR OLD PERSIAN CAT BY MISIDENTIFYING HER BLOOD TYPE (something that never happens anymore with competent physicians) AND GIVING HER THE WRONG BLOOD TYPE IN A TRANSFUSION. He did not even attempt to treat her for this in the two weeks she was under his care. I actually figured out what he had done through online research of her obvious symptoms (he never told me). After she had died, I took her body to another vet who confirmed what he had done and told me how obvious it was because her real blood type was in her records and did not match the blood type Kaplan gave her. Yes, you read right, she had records with her correct blood type but he never attempted to get them from her previous vet. Kaplan even had the nerve to continue to lie about what happened to my cat until it was proven that he gave her the wrong blood type through lab testing. Even then he tried to lie about who was to blame and what happened. He told me every day I went to visit my beloved pet and saw her clearly deteriorating condition that the transfusion was a great success and that she couldnt go home because she had a common cold but would be home any day. In her medical records you can see her lungs collapsing, her organs failing, basically everything I saw happening before my eyes but tried not to believe because of Kaplan's assurances. She finally died when holes developed in her lungs. I repeatedly asked him why she was yellow, sluggish and couldnt breath. She was obviously dying. He knew it, knew he had messed up, and lied. Im sure he will write under this and lie again through his teeth, changing the events of what has happened to my cat Isabelle as a final insult to her. The incompetence is disturbing, but the callous choice to lie to me about her condition (so i didnt have the choice of ending her suffering) and not treat her for any of her symptoms (thereby robbing me of the hope of saving her) is more so. And all so no one would know what he did. Please, stay clear of this terrible man. more

horrible vet 2/19/2011

Kaplan put my 17 year old cat through hell. A cat that had stomach inflammation, thyroid problems, chronic kidney problems, dehydration, arthritis (which he didn't tell me he had), weak, lost weight, etc. put him in their ""hospital"" in my emotional state. I had to beg him, repeatedly, hysterical to put him out of his misery; refused for a long, long time. Wants money only. Horrible, horrible vet. more

OK for basic care 1/20/2011

I've been there twice and saw Dr Kaplan both times. The first visit I was happy with. \r \r The second visit I felt like Dr Kaplan insisted on doing unnecessary blood and urine work results which were unnecessary in that they provided no information about the current situation and were not actionable. I went ahead and had them done anyway (pyschological pressure - you want to do the bext for your pet) but afterward, analyzing through the results realized I was right and felt bad about it for my cats sake - i.e. additional trauma to her.\r \r Would I go again? Well, if I absolutely need ""basic"" Vet care I might - because the large shiny/glitzy hospitals have big drawbacks themselves and i've had bad experiences there. more

Dr. Mohr is exceptional! Can't say enough about City Vet 10/29/2009

I took my first pet and new kitten for a check-up and shots to City Vet, and Dr. Mohr was my veterinarian. She is professional, waaay intelligent, kind and patient! Dr. Mohr took all the time I needed to answer the list of questions I had about caring for my new pet. I've been to City Vet twice, and each time Dr. Mohr never rushed us in or out, and did a very thorough exam. Her expertise and love for animals is evident. The staff was also professional and friendly. From the first phone call to the last visit, it was a great experience. I highly recommend Dr. Mohr. You will not be disappointed. In the world of veterinarians, she's a rock star! Pros: Professional, compassionate care, friendly environment Cons: None! more

City Vet Care CARES 10/25/2009

Dr Kaplan may not always be 'on time' because he takes time with his patients and the people to make sure he doesn't miss anything, After tests are done, he always calls personally .. he doesn't go home until every follow up is done. As far as my two cats (and I) are concerned he is the best in the city and I wouldn't go anywhere else (especially NOT to Westside Vet Ctr). Pros: Friendly staff, excellent doctors, happy pets Cons: Sometimes its a little nutty in the waiting room more

Absolutely Amazing 8/7/2009

Within the past year and a half that I have had my dog, I have had numerous bad encounters with vets in Manhattan. The biggest issues we had were that previous vets seemed concerned only with getting us in and out and not taking the time to calmly handle my guy and explain his medical situation adequately. They seemed far more concerned with my ability to pay for the visit than my pet's health. This is not the case with City Veterinary Care. I haven't got a single negative thing to say about it. Pros: Kind Reception staff, Knowledgable Doctors, Great Facility more

Dr. Brown is the Best!! 7/19/2009

I highly recommend Dr. Brown. She has been caring for my dog for 2 1/2 years and I will follow her wherever she goes. She is an excellent doctor, and her bedside manner is top notch. She is so gentle and caring with my dog, there is no way I could take her to see anyone else. If you feel that your dog deserves the best of the best go see Dr. Brown. The City Vet staff is also fantastic. The front desk crew is helpful and smart, and the vet assistance are caring, knowledgeable and extremely professional. Highly Recommended!! Pros: great care, wonderful staff more

Dr. Brown #1 Veterinarian at City Veterinary Care!!!! 1/26/2009

Dr. Brown treats my doggy with kindness and insures proper treatment in such a carasmatic way. As soon as I walk in I am greated by the young man up front who is nothing but exceptional, He is courteous, friendly, professional and attentive to everyone that walks in the practice. With Dr. Brown in this practice makes this the #1 Vet Clinic in New York City. As for Dr. Kaplan I have only seen him briefly and from what I have seen his personality does not shine like Dr. Brown. When I enter to my appointment with Dr. Brown she is prompt and attentive and I am out within 30 minutes and I have seen Dr. Kaplan's customers sitting in the lobby waiting for him since prior to my scheduled appointment. Anyways, .Highly recommend anyone that accepts my calls on her offtime, Keep up the great work. Pros: Dr. Brown and Courteous Reception Staff Cons: Small Office needs more seating more

Best Vet Care in Manhattan 1/12/2009

I moved to City Vet Care from another upper west side vet 4 years ago and have not looked back. First, I took my 11 year old dog, with complicated medical problems to Dr. Kaplan. He couldn't have been more attentive and serious about my dog's treatment. I saw amazing improvements in my dog's health under Dr. Kaplan's care. He personally returned my calls, often on his own time, which I very much appreciated. When I was faced with putting my dog down, Dr. Kaplan could not have been more compassionate and sensitive. I later took two of my foster dogs to City Vet Care. We did not see Dr. Kaplan, but saw another vet who was terrific as well. My current dog sees Dr. Kaplan, and we receive the same exceptional care. I have never paid much attention to the receptionists, as they are not treating my dog. Anyone in this city is aware that even the best park ave docs sometimes have mediocre receptionists, it should be a non-issue, unless it is an impediment to your pet's care, and if so, raise it with the vet. I would not take my dogs anywhere else. Pros: Excellent Vet Care more

Exceptional Practice ! 12/10/2008

I have received only excellent VET care by Dr.Kaplan , Dr.Paul Cavanagh & Dr.Brown !\r \r The reception staff are all caring & courteous !\r Techs are great !\r Hospital is clean !\r \r I feel really BLESSED that I have finally found a Animal Hospital that I can trust to take of my 3 babies .\r \r Since, I have a huge list of grrrrsss for Vets I have used in the Upper Westside & East Side of NYC.\r \r And, they are one the few vets involved in helping ""Animal Rescue Groups"" in NYC with the cost of medical care . \r \r Which proves that they really have a passionate"" LOVE"" for animals !!!\r \r Thank- you !!! Pros: Dr.Kaplan more

Mac-Kaplan 12/10/2008

I showed up for my appointment at City Veterinary Care and after waiting for almost an hour, I was told that there were no rooms available but the doctor would talk to me and examine my pet in the waiting room, if I was in ""such a hurry"". I am a native New Yorker and I?m used to space constrains but I felt that this was a bit too much. The waiting room was loud and hectic, and needless to say, it lacked any sense of privacy. I felt that we received a very unprofessional treatment, in spite of the fact that the doctor was very apologetic about the whole thing. My advise to Dr. Andrew Kaplan is: close your clinic and open a fast food franchise- you?ll get the high volume and $ that you are clearly seeking without deceiving your clients. Cons: loud and unprofessional more

Atrocious customer service and unkind incompetent vets 12/5/2008

I am shocked by what I saw and how badly I have been treated in this clinic. The staff is rude and incompetent. The office manager is an out of control incompetent appalling woman who screams at customers. If you tell the staff that they made a mistake, they blame you for it. There are always so many people working at the same time that you get a headache looking at them. The problem is that the staff is under trained and the office manager is so incompetent that there is a need for ten people to do the job of one competent person.\r The owner is no prize either. He is neither nice, nor diligent. My dog's problems went undetected and my concerns unheard by him. As a result, I was forced to take my dog some place else to get proper care. The owner is a condescending inconsiderate man with no manners and no respect for clients. My family has been awakened late at night by his calls. He would yell at me that he was tired! No one asked him to call that late and it wasn't even an emergency. He is ruder in person. He should know that speaking fast, laud, and over a client does not make him correct . Everybody makes mistakes, but a good doctor lives up to his mistakes and responsibilities. Cons: Poor quality of care, disrespectful staff and vets more

poor quality care, no compassion 11/8/2008

My pet died at home a day after being released from city vet care. She had been hospitalized for multiple tests and treatments for over 4 days. I was devastated. I left multiples messages for Dr. Kaplan, the owner of the practice, and he never took the time to call or e-mail me back. more

Doesn't get any better 10/5/2008

In the interest of full disclosure I just recently got a new puppy and therefore have only been to City Veterinary care once. I was somewhat hesitant as a few of the reviews here have said the staff can be rude, but I found that to be as far from the truth as possible. The two females in front were extremely nice and insisted on holding my puppy so I could tell they really liked animals. This immediately put me at ease as being the owner of a new puppy is stressful enough as it is without having to worry about a bad experience at the vet. I didn't see Dr. Kaplan as he wasn't working on the day I went, but instead saw Dr. Sheehan who was as nice and as knowledgeable as you could possibly ask of a vet. Like I said, I only went once, but this place felt right from the start and I am very relieved to have found a place I am so comfortable with right from the start. Pros: Friendly staff and extremely friendly vet more

from great to the worst 9/26/2008

i had to find a new vet after giving city vet care many chances. dr. kaplan is too busy to take care of his clients and every time i find a vet i feel comfortable with, they leave in less than a year. each new doctor seems less caring and less experienced. the receptionists are rude and sloppy. i was given the wrong medication once, and twice they gave me cat food instead of my prescription dog food... no more. more

Terrible reception 9/16/2008

We were happy with our veterinarian, who is no longer with the practice, and vet tech. The front desk receptionists, however, are consistently unprofessional. They often put us on hold, while on a call for scheduling an appointment, and never return to the call. And while on a visit, they purposefully allow you to wait even though they are clearly idle and do not need to attend to anything else before providing you with whatever--paperwork, etc.--they are supposed to. more

A Superb Veterinary Clinic 9/12/2008

\r I am very impressed with the wonderful care I have received at City Veterinary. I saw Dr. Hurson\r today who treated my cat for a urinary blockage. She was able to help alleviate the problem without the more intensive catheterization usually required. I got the immediate impression that their top concern was for my pet's well being and felt reassured that I was really getting an expert diagnosis, treatment and advice without any of the unnecessary tests or procedures that I have unfortunately sometimes encountered elsewhere. My cats require long term care, but luckily they will be in good hands. more
