Best

I have had great experiences at Changes with haircuts, massages, mani and pedicures. Excellent service and a nice atmosphere.

Worst

I am extremely disappointed in this salon (or at least my stylist- Nichole). The first time she cut and highlighted my hair, I was relatively happy with my color but not happy wi...

Bad service....... Ridiculously bad service!!!!!!! 9/27/2018

I went to Judy to get a Mani/Pedi and couldn't believe how bad the service was. I was going on vacation so having my nails done nicely was important to me. The Gel manicure peeled off in two days; it had blotches of nail coming through and bubbles where she pooled the polish. She was in such a rush to leave she actually had me stand beside the foot tub and wait while she cleaned it. It was quite awkward and the other girl giving a pedicure beside me just rolled your eyes and looked at me with that, "I so sorry for you", look. She didn't help with colors at all when I asked her for fall colors she just handed me the paper chart. She literally twist and bend your toes until you think they're going to snap-off. Judy, you just missed out! I am a very high tipper, at least 30%...…. I hope NO one ever goes to you. more

Horrible! Al and Great Lengths 4/22/2014

Wanting to try something new I opted for extensions and did a great deal of research before deciding which brand to go with. Only finding two salons in the area that offered Great Lengths I went with Changes because a human answered the phone and scheduling seemed easy. My appointment was made with Al who does extensions there, I set up a consultation and ultimately decided to try one bundle to see how they worked out. I was required to pay for the extension up front ($113) and was then told it would be $500.00 for the installation. Yes, you read that correctly, Five Hundred Dollars to install them….but hey, that included a "hair cut"! Yay! I decided on color as well. So this "hair cut" consisted on 4 literal whacks with a dull razor and mind you, he never asked how I wanted it cut or cut any of my own natural hair. The color was inappropriately applied, he never checked on me while the color processed. At check out he told me, and I quote, "you may loose one….~maybe~ 2 but that's normal." At just over 6 weeks since the "installation" I have lost 24 "strands" which leaves me 11….which looks ridiculous at different lengths because they have slipped. I called to speak with Al to just have them removed because I just don't' care to continue doing business with him to even have them corrected and NOW he wants to tell me that "yes, it is actually possible to loose that many depending on how your hair sheds" Seriously? I am not shedding, these things are literally sliding out of my hair….luckily, not taking much of my natural hair with them. Obviously, this was operator error as I have done everything required for the upkeep diligently…as most anyone would after dropping nearly a grand to try something out. Getting an appointment to have them removed was like pulling teeth unlike getting an appointment when I wanted to give up my money. I am not even sure what to do short of paying someone else to remove them. All around bad experience. Parking is horrible, reception is par at best and I'm out of room more

Way to expensive for work done 10/29/2012

I usually don't write reviews but having traveled and been to lots of salons I must say that pricing is to high for some of the hair color / foil and cut services. I was in the chair less than 2 hours did not have a full head foil or color only partial ,the stylist only trimmed my current look 1/2 inch .not what I consider any styling and the bill was $255 that did not include the tip. more

IGNORANT SPA OWNER 11/15/2009

I wrote a substandard review for Changes City Spa a few months ago. Reading through their other reviews, Changes City Spa has substandard services and staff. All the good reviews seemed to have been written years ago. I believe the reason for the bad service is due to the owner, Norma. Having dealt with her in the past, she could not care less about any customer service feedback. That is the reason the staff can get away with treating customers poorly with no consequence. 'The customer is always right' motto does not apply in this business. Norma launched a successful business and took it for granted by thinking it will always stay that way and not realizing that what she needed was loyal customers...as I once were! How is business now Norma? more

SUBSTANDARD DAY SPA 11/15/2009

I was a regular customer at Changes Hair Styling and City Spa. I went to get my gel nails filled regularly by a very good (although a bit rough) nail technician that wanted to do MY nails HER way. After months of going to her I finally told her that I wanted my nails done a certain way and she refused. I decided not to go to her any more and made my next regular appointment with somebody else recommended by the front desk staff. A few days later I was told by the Spa manager and owner that they did not recommend for me to see another Nail Technician at Changes City Spa because I had been going to their 'Best Technician' and to see somebody else would be going down in standard and would not meet my needs. I felt that should have been my decision, but decided to go elsewhere. A management that only feels confident in one of their nail technicians to do a superb job is unsatisfactory. It also makes sense when reading other reviews stating that other nail services at Changes City Spa have been a 'disappointment'. On a positive note, I found a few other Nail Technicians in the area that are excellent. You may have to look a little harder, but they are out there. more

Attention All Curly-Heads - Changes Is the Salon for You 8/25/2006

I just got my hair cut by "Deborah" at the cityspa and she did an excellent job at cutting my naturally curly hair. Deborah listened to what I wanted to do with my hair and actually executed it wonderfully. She also understood that the strands of curly hair bend differently, so, she has to really pay attention to her cutting techniques. Her attention to detail worked out so well. I am so happy with my new 'do! I can't wait to get some color next time as I'm totally hooked on the place now. I've also had a manicure and pedicure there before too. It was such a nice experience...the vibrating chairs, the warm, bubbly water, excellent attention to detail and care, and, of course, the wine! ;) more

Day Spa 8/15/2005

Changes Day Spa has practically everything a girl could want -- and have even just opened up a Men's Spa right down the street called Jake's Place. Anyway, at Changes you can get full hair styling, manicures, pedicures (get the full treatment -- it's worth it!), and massages. they even do pre-natal massages which are kind of hard to find. The staff is excellent in every area I have only had one bad experience there and it was on a manicure. Not my favorite thing anyway, but still a disappointment. If you are having your hair done, I recommend Al. He is one of the most expensive, but I have tried the others and while they are all qualified, Al is the best! You should always try to make an appointment if going to the main facility, although walk-ins for hair are accepted at the auxiliary office down the street. But, try to go to the main one -- the spa is less than a year old and the whole experience is what makes it worthwhile. Enjoy!! more

I LOVE THIS PLACE!! 7/27/2005

Changes is AWSOME!! In my highschool years, I worked there and let me tell you, these are the best stylists in this area! We had people from DC and Richmond coming to our salon, so that should tell you something! You get what you pay for, and yes, Changes is a bit pricey, but the services provided are worth every cent!! You will leave that place feeling like a million bucks! more

Some of the best "hair artists" in town! 7/21/2005

Changes hair salon has some of the best hair stylists in Hampton Roads. Located in Ghent, this place makes me feel like I am getting my hair done by a famous professional in New York City. All of their techs are certified, and many have graduated from well known places like Bumble and Bumble. Their colorists are certified as well, so you leave feeling like a million bucks! You will not get the service or style at a chain hair salon like you'll get it at Changes, and I guarantee you will feel beautiful and more self confident when you leave. more
