Delicious, imaginitive sushi and entrees, great setting, attentive service 1/29/2007

Chin is one of those places that I'm always shocked to find half-empty when I get there. With so many incredibly mediocre, overrated sushi restaurants in the Richmond constantly packed, slightly out-of-the-way but fantastic Chin seems to get short-changed. Hopefully with enough glowing reviews they'll start getting the attention they deserve.\r \r Chin's interior is austere and understated and generally comfortable, although we've been there on cold nights and the interior has been a little too chilly for our taste. Service is extremely friendly and attentive, and the owner himself gets involved in making sure everyone is happy.\r \r The food is for the most part far from traditional sushi, and while their good variety of nigiri and sashimi are all well cut and fresh they aren't the reason we go there. From soups to small plates to sushi rolls to entrees, their dishes are all innovative, creative with flavors and ingredients, and most importantly delicious. \r \r Their small plates range from interesting takes on traditional japanese appetizers to totally new blends of Japanese and other cuisines, such as the warm chow fun-wrapped rolls. Their sushi rolls, while a bit pricey, are large, filling, and feature an incredible array of flavors and textures. Sauce isn't used nearly as heavily as other fusion sushi restaurants, instead used in small drizzles to accentuate already taste-packed rolls. They don't have a wide variety of entrees, but the ones they do have are all tremendous, so non-sushi eaters in your group will come away satisfied. Finally, they have a large variety of Japanese style ice cream for dessert.\r \r The main downsides of the restaurant are the expense, which while no worse than other fusion sushi restaurants in the city is still in the range of $25-$35 per person total, perhaps too prohibitive to eat there as frequently as we'd like to, and parking, which can be a nightmare (take a bus!). Overall, though, you can't go wrong with Chin. Pros: all food is excellent, nice ambience and service Cons: not cheap, parking is difficult in the area more

Best kept sushi secret @ a fantastic price 8/14/2006

I almost don't want to give a good review because I don't want to share! This place is amazing. The menu is really extensive, especially if you like rolls--there's something for everybody here. They don't use crazy ""California"" ingredients and the variety of flavors is truly an accomplishment. Main courses and appetizers are great too. \r \r The rolls are great for beginners. but, if you're looking for exotic fish, don't come here. He keeps to the basics, but finds every possible way to reinvent them with super tasty results! Definitely try the Simon Roll, and for avocado lovers, the Daniel Roll. Always super fresh and the price is right for SF sushi. My husband and I pig out and usually come out of there with a $50-70 bill, depending on the rolls and how saucy we get. :) Give a shot, you won't be disappointed.\r \r As for the ambience, it's pretty small, so it's OK for a date night, but there's nothing really around it to walk to afterwards except the bars on Clement street. The noise level isn't too bad unless they have a large party in the back. Pros: great food, great value, very fresh Cons: parking, bathroom more

Best Sushi 8/4/2005

Chin is my favorite place to go for sushi in SF, actually, anywhere. Shrimp Churn Fun melts in your mouth. Simon rolls are awesome, 49er roll & Sumo are also excellent. My favorite is the appetizer- spicy tuna hand roll- this is amazing. Herman Chin has done an excellent job with this place. He's great! Try it... Pros: Tasty, Friendly, Fun Cons: Parking can be tough, It's not close enough more

Great sushi, conscientious owner/chef 2/23/2005

I've been going to this restaurant for about 5 years. Herman, the owner makes some unique and tasty rolls. He always makes sure that we're enjoying ourselves and makes us feel at home. He has at least one other restaurant in Union Square. more

I have been a loyal diner at Chin's since its opening and even after I moved out of the neighborhood, I still drive back for Herman Chin's rolls.
