The Classic Alternative Newspaper in Chicago 6/14/2006

Living in Chicago there is a wide variety of media to choose from. We have a minimum of three major newspapers, possibly more. Each area you live in has a newspaper that covers things in that neck of your particular woods. Still, there is one weekly, alternative newspaper that is the biggest name in media in this town and that is the Chicago Reader. It's huge and I mean that literally. The paper comes every Thursday and seems as thick as a neighborhood phone book. I love the weekly alternative papers. I used to live in St. Louis and was a huge fan of the Riverfront Times. Not only beause the weeklies tend to have a liberal bent that appeals to me, but because it is a weekly, the stories tend to be in-depth. That is true with the Reader as well. What really makes the Reader the newspaper of choice is the extensive listing of what is going on around town. Every bar, every club is represented. If you can't figure out something to do over the weekend after studying the Reader you must not be trying hard enough. It's a classic, it's great. Now, if they would just let me write for them! more

Great alternative paper 5/28/2006

Even though after reading it for five minutes, you will find yourself covered in black ink (yuck!), it's still a cool paper to pick up to get the local scoop. They are used for job ads (I never found one in this paper, but it's good for college kids, retail jobs and restaurant gigs). I read it for the music scene and to see what's going on around town. Even though I rarely agree with their movie revews (kind of annoying at times, and they usually hate what I like and vice versa), it's still a good paper. more

Not Just For Your Bird Cage 5/27/2006

Before you line your bird's cage with this free paper you may want to check out sections 2 and 3. Section 2 is the movie and theater section that has a complete listing and is also pretty honest about their movie reviews. Section 3 is the music section and has a comprehensive listing of all styles of music with the focus on Rock, & Alt. or Indie. Some of their writers and features are disgusting to me but this is mostly thrown in the classifieds(section 4). This is the section for your parrot's cage. Section 1 (news & articles) is tolerable. more

Local alternative Chicago newspaper 12/23/2005

This free local paper has a great free classifieds section, the best coverage of the local music scene, and good reporting on local news stories that aren't covered elsewhere. It comes out on Thursday night and if you are looking for an apartment or a job in most North side neighborhoods, this is the first place you look. The Trib is better for regular jobs, but more edgy jobs are found here or on craigslist. They also have a personals section that is great fun to read, if that sort of thing amuses you. They have an online version of the Reader than can be useful too. http://www.chicagoreader.com/ more
