This is very much a high-end, special-occasion restaurant. It's the place you go when you want a Dining Experience, not when you just want to eat out - unless you're rich, in which case by all means and I hope you're giving some of that money to a non-profit or the homeless folks along the street while you're at it.
The restaurant is incredibly beautiful and homey at the same time. It's one of those places where, if you're not paying attention, you can accidentally spend sixty dollars on a drink, two appetizers, and dessert - at lunch. It's also the kind of place where you will not regret one cent of it.
Unless you're a vegetarian. The dinner menus have very specific and very few options, and they are rarely if ever vegetarian. The cafe portion has more options, for lunch only I believe. And, of course, if you want to get in without waiting for hours, you need to make a reservation - although I dropped by with a friend for dessert once, and was squeezed into a table in about twenty minutes. But a lot of places in the Bay Area make breathtaking desserts, including Masse's Pastries down the street; not so many make incredible regular food. I recommend saving up those dessert dollars until you can reserve your spot for an entire wonderful meal. No matter what they're serving, it will be awesome. Unless you're a vegetarian.
