Over the summer, Chesapeake Center for Creative Arts had a group doing improvisation at the center court in Marley Station. I arrived with my two year old in time to see all of the kids playing dead. The teachers were trying to get them to move by going up to each of them and poking them, tickling them, etc. At the end, the kid who stayed "dead" the longest won a prize. As it turned out, the "prize" was that they got to "shoot" the teacher. The next several minutes turned into all of the students pretending to shoot the teachers. As if that wasn't bad enough, after they were done, the teacher went around to each of the parents and kids in the audience and pretended to hand them a gun! Now, I realize it was all pretend, but I should not have to worry about my toddler being introduced to guns and violence at the kids' events in the mall! Furthermore, pretending to hand out guns and pretending to shoot each other only reinforces that violence is okay.
