Great Theatre that suffers from dishonest Staff Member 2/23/2012

This is a response to the allegations made in response to my friend's post below. I am the ""friend"" she referred to and we had indeed planned to see the play together. I couldn't make it and tried to call her but her phone's battery was down and she tried to go into the theatre to look for me as she had arrived late herself. As she stood on the top stair, Jonathan approached her and told her she couldn't stand there. She politely went back to the door to see if she could spot me from there. But again, Jonathan came and told her she could not stand there. She explained the situation but he apparently wanted her to be more submissive and when she held her ground, he told her to leave the theatre. Even though Jonathan had no right to order her out of the theatre, she went outside and then stopped in front of the ticket office, deliberating between trying to find a payphone to call me to see if I was already in the theatre with tickets or to get them for us or just for herself. This is because we had said that whoever gets there first buys the tickets and I had emailed her the day before that I was not sure if I could make it but was hoped so. As she asked the man at the ticket counter how many tickets were left, Jonathan who had followed her was still fixed on her and continued to stare at her. He then asked her ""Are you going to get tickets or not?"" in a provocative way, while she was trying to make a decision. She told him that, frankly, it was none of his business and to back off and he then replied to her ""You know what, You're not going to do business with us today"" She then told him that she would get a ticket whether he wanted to or not and he then tried to force her to leave. At this point she told him to F*** Off and spoke to a few people who were standing around. She spoke another woman with whom she exchanged emails with so she is the one who actually has a witness. Of course the people who work at the theatre were too cowardish to find out what had happened and probably take his side but the Pope has protected child molestors, too, as sadly almost everyone takes the side of the company they work for. One also has to assume that this person lied to the other people working there as he attempts to do here by saying she did not have a ticket when he would NOT LET HER buy a ticket. As for the strange shifts of behaviour, I can very well imagine them. What else would you expect of someone who is treated this way by a theatre staff while visiting their theatre? The stalking accusation is another lie because my friend stayed around the theatre to wait until the play had finished to inform others of his abusive behaviour. Besides, it is Jonathan who posts photos of celebrities he has never even worked with on his website and therefore obviously tries to use them for his own benefit. My friend spoke to me about this issue and despite having been treated this way, was considering removing her review again in order not to hurt the theatre and even the name of this staff member as she always worries about doing people an injustice and hoped that said staff member had learnt from the experience and realised what he had done wrong. Unfortunately this review only allows 4000 characters so I will post the entire response on Tumblr until this issue has been resolved. more

Beware of Abusive Employee 12/16/2011

My visit to the Cherry Lane Theatre, as it is so deceivingly sweetly called, turned out to be more like an Auschwitz field experiment trip thanks to an employee there called Jonathan. Said man abuses his power there by being rude to women who refuse to play his arrogant and pityful status games. Once it's clear to him that he's not going to get a date with you, ladies, he will throw you out of the theatre for no reason other than putting him in his place. He will then proceed to threaten you, if you don't leave the premise and if that doesn't work, will be quick to lock all the celebrities in the theatre and tell them some twisted story that will make him look like the victim. more

Great shows with cheap deals 3/18/2009

I have always been a fan of Cherry Lane Theatre, the one off broadway space that has remained true to its groundbreaking heritage for over a hundred years. every year they showcase plays by new writers who have never been produced before and then go off to become the leading playwrights of the country. I look forward to seeing Housebreaking and Jailbait these next few weeks. Pros: Mature Calibur with a funky west village twist Cons: can be hard to find, but in a way that's a pro too more

A vital lab for the development of new American plays, on one of the most beautiful blocks in New York 11/10/2006

Cherry Lane is one of the most exciting places to be if you care about playwriting and the future of American Drama. It draws from it's heritage, the most groundbreaking, award-winning voices and has built an extraordinary community of bold new dramatists of today. It's an artist colony. The talent involved and the extremely-personable staff are first-rate. Where else in New York city can you get quality theater in an intimate setting, in a lovingly restored, landmarked building on the most beautiful block? Housed in beloved Greenwich Village, the most tolerant neighborhood in the country, perhaps the world, it's 80-year history, alone, inspires greatness. The late Rod Steiger said ""I applaud all the great artists that have performed at Cherry Lane. This place is small, but the ideas are big."" And the most reasonable ticket prices in town!! Compelling new work, not to be missed!!! Pros: Ambience, Service, Quality Programming, Parking, Comfortable, Escape, Intimate, Charming Cons: No more Grange Hall Restaurant next door more

Off (and Off Off) Broadway at its FINEST 1/14/2003

The previous reviewer is an ignorant fool. If they knew anything about the workings of theatre, they would know that the producers of the show are at fault. The Cherry Lane Theatre is a fantastic space dedicated to the development of emerging playwrights. With two spaces (one OFF and one OFF OFF), they show a variety of works both mainstream and experimental in nature including remounts from their illustrious past. Check out their Mentor series. What a great concept! more

Avoid at all costs 7/6/2002

I had tickets for a 5pm show on Saturday 6 July 2002 for a party of 4, including 2 friends from Philly. We arrived to find the place empty and were told the 5pm performance had been cancelled and nobody thought it important enough to call ticket holders. Gross incompetence. Their shows are not that stupendous that they can overcome such poor business practices. more

  • In Short
The theater has a distinctive charm in a hidden spot in the West Village. There is a rickety, worn air to this space, but it has a strong theatrical flavor. Established in 1924...
