Worst

Not worth visiting. Sushi was tiny, tough, and flavorless. Usually you can get decent salmon sashimi anywhere, this stuff was terrible, tough, too warm and the rice was wayy to ...

Sushi the way it was meant to be 2/18/2007

Cherin is my favorite sushi place in town. Yes, Nobu is good, but for the price I pay for one piece of sushi at Nobu, I can get an entire meal at Cherin. Ok, I'm exaggerating a bit, but you get what I mean. It's a relaxed place with wonderful sashimi & sushi. No reservation required unless you're w/a large group. I go there for their white tuna & salmon skin hand rolls--my personal favorites. The pieces are not big. It's sushi the way it was meant to be--a delicacy to be savored, not wolfed down like a pizza slice. I like that they do not load their sushi up w/rice. If I wanted rice I would've ordered rice. ...and just for the record, I'm a real patron of this restaurant, and am in no way related to the owner(s). Pros: Good sushi at a value, comfortable setting, unpretentious Cons: Minimal decor, Restaurant is a bit hidden more

THE SMALLEST and WORST SUSHI OF NYC 1/20/2007

DO NOT BE FOOLED BY THE RAVE REVIEWS ON CITYSEARCH. They were all written by the owner. Went there for my 31st birthday dinner last night. Worst sushi I've ever had in a long while. If you want to see the world's smallest and flavorless sushi go to Cherin. We all left hungry because nobody wanted to order more of the subpar sushi. I've never written a review before but felt it was my duty to warn fellow new yorkers of fake reviews. If you go also be prepared to wait a long time for the food. Pros: You can get a seat there anytime w/o a wait... Cons: Long waits for food and you'll leave hungry more

fantastic rolls & sushi 12/7/2006

I have to say i can afford to go here everyday if had to eat sushi 7days a week..The quality & the freshness of the fish can be compared to any high-end sushi joints in the city ..period...the cuts may not be prestine but for the price there is no other sushi restaurants that can be compared to this restaurant. .. Highly recommended for sushi lovers... Pros: great quality fish, price more

Uninspired sushi 12/2/2006

Wow. I cannot believe the amount of great reviews for this place. Is it the staff posting on here? Me and some friends went the other night and I have to say it was below mediocre. Portions were small, service was slow, overall very uninspired sushi. People this is nothing special, don't waste your time! New York can do better. I will not be back. Cons: small portions, bad cuts of fish, uninspired menu more

Fabulous 12/1/2006

I went to cherin last weekend with my friends & a few bottles of wine that we brought along with us & it was my first sushi in New york..I have to say their rolls were too good ..the ""olivia roll"" is just a nowhere to be found roll --(never seen anything like it)..I can't say this is the best sushi i have had---its the best meal i have ever had & did i mention cheap... Pros: food, cost more

Best sushi on a budget 11/30/2006

This is the only place i would go to if i were to eat sushi...The ambiance is perfect & the waitstaff has mastered the balance of being super attentive without being annoying , & the food is delicious & very inexpensive..Words are not enough to praise this restaurant-- they have made a regular out of me.. Pros: perfect more

Pathetic 11/29/2006

35 reviews of people going absolutely hog wild over this sorry excuse for sushi. Tiny cutlets of sushi. Uninspired sushi rolls. Luke warm miso soup. Seaweed salad doused in dressing. There were three tables, one waitress. We ordered $115 worth of food. Most of it sat up at the sushi bar for at least 10 minutes while the waitress scurried around aimlessly. I'm really beginning to doubt the validity of Citysearch ""reviews"". The folks that wrote all the positive review for this restaurant (which is why I went and brought my friends with me) have NO IDEA what good sushi is. more

Great Sushi at a great price 11/17/2006

The best in the city 10/29/2006

As we went out looking for this place we passed by a bunch of indian restaurants with a lot of christmas lights & hundreds of lights in the shape of chillies & MAX color & with call persons on the sidewalk trying to bring in customers to their restaurants & then all of a sudden there is this little gem with no body bothering us & we were sure this was not indian & yes my wife & i were right. Its Cherin Sushi - we were drawn in by this beautiful miniature rock garden by the entrance & as we got seated we felt completely relaxed --- the place looked so peaceful with their minimal decor & dim candle lights...!! Their food was great especially the tiny little salad they gave right after we ordered our food. My wife did not want to eat it as it not appear like a normal salad at all..I had a bite of it & that was it i fell in love with it...i could not tell what was in it but our waiter was kind enough to give me an extra salad when i told him that the salad (cucumber, mushrooms& seaweed & some ugly looking dressin) was something i had never tried before..!!.Please do not hesitate to try the little salad & gabriella roll ( a little spicy though)!! Definitely going back... more

Great sushi & sake 10/15/2006

Trendy sushi jem hidden amongst a cluster of indian restaurants. The sushi is absolutely out of this world at this hip little spot..Great picks for dates as well as groups.Cheers to Cherin. Don't miss out their unfiltered CLOUDY looking nigori sake..!! Pros: sushi, service, ambience more

Best early bird special deal 10/15/2006

I pass by this sushi restaurant every day as i live just a block down this tiny little gem. I never thought of trying this place as I assumed it was a pricey little joint ( looked a little expensive) for a guy living in a studio apt.. I gave it a try last thursday nite around 7 when my brother came to visit me from out of town. We got seated promptly as the place was not too crowded & to my surprise the menu looked so inexpensive & I could not believe when the waiter talked about their ""early bird special"" !!! 6pcs of sushi & any roll or 3 rolls for only $9.95. Pros: inexpensive & great early bird special more

Highly Recommended! 10/6/2006

The rolls here were really good and the fish was definitely fresh. Pros: food, service, ambience more

immaculate sushi 9/19/2006

Stuff yourself with fresh & uniquely pepared sushi under fifteen bucks, u can't go wrong. If you are solely into ""old school""sushi u will not like it here. Sushi & sashimi are re-interpreted with their unique pristine presentation . If ur into rolls u cannot skip this place at all...they have the best rolls uniqely prepared & the best fish to rice ratio where u get the better taste of fish than hogging huge chunks of rice unlike other sushi restaurants. Its rare to find a place u like immediately but this is definitely one of them. There is one negative thing about this place......u eat here u don't want to eat anywhere else..!! Pros: good quality yet very cheap, BYOB Cons: on the curry lane more

yummy to ur tummy 9/13/2006

Best meal of my life hands down. I do not remember exactly what i had as i went in with a group of frens but everything i had on the order that was shared among us was great!!Service was attentive yet not intrusive. Added bonus:they let us bring in our own bottle of wine despite of their own little wine/sake menu. I noticed the table next to us brought bottles of greygoose and mixers !!! I'll be back is all i can say.. Pros: best rolls, price, allowing to bring in your drinks more

cool place with the best sushi in the village 9/7/2006

I went in with a group of frens & to my surprise i found a roll named after my name. I tried my roll out & it was amazingly the best roll i have ever had to taste in my life. They have many other rolls named after people & they all taste great. I have to say that their rolls are different compared with the other restaurants u might have been earlier as they use very little rice (u could actually see the nori). But my fren who is a regular there told me that this is the only restaurant that serves rolls with very little rice which keeps him comming back & guess what he is right coz am definitley comming back . Bring along a lot of frens coz u might find your name or ur fren's name on the menu too... I like their tiny miniature rock garden by the door too.. Pros: thumbs way up more

Skimpy sushi/rolls ... Cheated once but not twice! 9/6/2006

I like to try out new foods and restaurants. While sushi/rolls are nothing new, Cherin's great variety of rolls seemed attractive. My husband and I ordered quite a few items and thought we would be glutenous. Wrong! The rolls were half the normal size you would get elsewhere but at the same price. The rice was packed so tight (I guess there wasn't much surface to roll), that there was hardly any space to insert their prized menu item: crab meat. The sushi was prosciuto thin. In the end, we neither tasted the ""real"" crab meat in the skinny rolls nor did we have the sensation of any raw fish melting in our mouths. By the time we left at 7:30PM (we're parents, what can I say) on a long weekend holiday, we were still the only customers. If you must eat here, think of another place for entree afterward. Pros: Quiet side street Cons: Feel extremely cheated more

Best meal with best deal 8/26/2006

Whenever I am craving for top quality sushi & freindly service I head to Cherin Sushi. This place has the best sushi in the city & the most uniquely prepared sushi, sashimi & rolls. The sushi & sashimi portions are really big with very imaginative presentations & the rolls are amazing. My favourite roll ""Olivia roll"" is just -""slamming""!!The best of all -they let you bring your own booze even though they have a small list of beer & wine menu. So if you are ready for a ride unlike any you have ever had & like to bring in your own drink (more bangg for the buck) I highly recommend this place... Pros: BYOB, PRICE, immaculate service Cons: only japanese beer more

Its simply the best 8/21/2006

I have been a regular here since it opened last summer. The rolls may appear to look small as compared to the other restaurants but this place has huge portions of fish on their rolls with very little rice involved, which makes me come back atleast once a week. After all who wants to pay sushi prices for a big ball of rice. It's a great place for people who love sushi especially if u don't want to end up eating too much rice... Pros: ambience, service & food more

Not good... 8/18/2006

sorry, I'm going to have to give this place a bad review. Pros: contemporary setting Cons: Bad Sushi, Slow service more
