Comfort Food 7/26/2006

This is a great little place to get that home-made comfort food, like mac-n-cheese, and meatloaf. Though the restaurant is frequently packed, in winter months, they offer free hot cider while you wait - YUM - paper cups, and all the free refills you need. There are a couple of tables that are so small it's hard to fit your meal, but apart from that, portions are very hearty, service is great, and it's nice to see all those comfort foods on the menu now that Comfort Diner is gone. more

Fun Setting 5/22/2006

Chat 'n chew is in the heart of zany Union Square. It could feel a lot more hectic, but the staff does it's best to calm the frenzy. Lines can get long for a table, but the staff frequently offers a cool drink to calm the nerves. The burgers are great as are the fries--and they pile on the food here. You won't walk away hungry. Somehow this place feels right on an early fall afternoon. Settle in for a hearty meal with friends and leave your diet at the door. more

Chat Elsewhere 3/19/2006

While I was never as crazy about this place as some, I too mourn its demise, as it was a wonderful guilty pleasure (and they had at one time the best milkshakes in New York). No the food feels cold, heavy and not even fresh, and like another has noted, the place never seems to be as clean as a restaurant should be. There are other places to get comfort food in New York these days. Go there instead. more

Let down at the chow down 3/19/2006

I miss the old days at the Chat-n-Chew. I used to be a big fan, especially of the teeny weeny mac-n-cheese. The service was never particularly good, but the last few times I went in there service was appallingly bad. The bathrooms are filthy (as are many parts of the floor and some chairs). My food was cold and came slowly (had it just been sitting on a counter in the kitchen?) I was on carb overload at the end of the meal without my usual satisfaction. I used to be willing to wait for a table here. Now I avoid it if possible. more

Overrated; there's a reason why the 6th Ave location shut down... 2/1/2006

I've been there for brunch and a mid-afternoon lunch. Both times, I went in hungry, and both times, I left with a full stomach. Prices are moderate so it's okay on the wallet. However, there was nothing much to write home about. These days, it seems you can get comfort or Southern food most anywhere in the city, so I can already think of a couple places better than this: - Mama's Food Shop (in Alphabet City) - Great Jones Cafe (on Great Jones and Lafayette) more

Best Grilled Cheese EVER 10/31/2005

If you're looking for down right comfort food with a casual vibe this is the place. Most of the service are young college age crowd, so you get that youthful vibe with its staff and customers. Call it a "better diner". You can feel the age from the stickiness or "grease" on the table surface. The nostalgic signs, and prints on the wall. My friend I ordered both the cod fish po boy. Mine with vegetables, which you can tell came straight out of a can, and he some fries. The portions were indeed overwhelming, and enough for my lunch tomorrow. Overall it's an easy choice with comforting food. more
