Wonderful! 12/20/2007

The Charles is a wonderful place to see a film. We do "event" screenings for The Sun's Reader Rewards program there and the staff is wonderful! Accomodating and friendly, they go out of their way to make our events effortless. Comfortable seating in the lobby, several microphones (and the batteries are ALWAYS fresh), and a true love of the art of film that shows. The sound system and screens are state of the art yet The Charles manages to maintain the feel of an old film house. Great place to see the latest release or a classic! Bravo! more

Great art movie house 4/10/2006

The Charles Theater shows films that you won't see in the big suburban megaplexes. They have a nice small-theater atmosphere even with five or six screens. The lobby has tables and chairs and you can get drinks and snacks from the cafe next door while you wait for your showing. Their snack bar is good too---seems cheaper than the big commercial places and they have good popcorn! The place is neat and clean for the most part. Be sure to try the tapas place next door---it's excellent. more

great movie house 10/4/2005

There are very few movie houses in Baltimore and this is the best. They typically show independent films such as Supersize Me and 911, but The Charles plays new first-run Hollywood movies and cinema classics as well. The unique building was once used for streetcar storage. The only problem with this theater is parking...you have to get their early to hunt for street parking. more

Great independent film theater 8/16/2005

If you are looking for non-hollywood (independent) films to see this is the right place to be. It's located right off of 83 expressway downtown near plenty of local places to eat at before or after the movie. The theater itself is very contemporary looking and one of very few indepndent film theaters that I have been to which have stadium seating. Each theater is fairly small which means every seat in the house is a good one. The popcorn here is also incredible! more

Wonderful experience 8/15/2005

This is a great place to see a movie in the city – probably the best. They have a lot of independent movies that you can't see anywhere else. The variety is incredible. The staff is friendly and the food is much cheaper than a regular movie chain. I highly recommend this place. more

Movie History 7/27/2005

For Baltimoreans proud of their cinematic history (native son John Waters, the many movies still filmed here), Charles Theater is a must see. It maintains its original atmosphere and transforms moviegoing into a much more dignified and weighty experience. The Charles alternates between first-run movies and classics, and both are made more enjoyable by the unique venue. more
