Great place for a date... 9/5/2008

Went here with my gal last week and had the steak and frites for like $11.00 and it was tasty. she had the spinach dip and it was very good. the service was well above average and the server was very friendly and helpful. if you haven't dined here give it a try and if you have give it a second chance. Pros: Good char broiled meats. Cons: None that I experienced more

Yukk.... What a waste. 6/4/2008

Ordered the Asian steak salad. The only thing Asian about it must have been the guy who cooked it. The meat seemed to be poor quality and tough, almost like stew meat. It was also burned, but I guess with a name like Charcoal I should have expected this. It was way over priced at $16. Do yourself a favor and go to In-N-Out and save $10. Pros: Let me know when you find one. Cons: Bad, burned, over priced food. more

The worst restaurant I have been to! 4/18/2008

I was excited to go there as I am a long time resident of Hollywood. Any time there is new business we try to support it. Charcoal was bad on every level. The strong charcoal odor when you get in, the tacky decor, the horrible attitude from the staff, the extended wait for the food and ultimately the food itself. If you are in the area and would like better food there are numerous better places (including Burger King). Pros: Location Cons: Food, service, decor, strong odor more

Food was Delicious, Helpful Service 4/6/2008

We went to Charcoal without reading all of the negative reviews first... Pros: Helpful Service Cons: A few kinks, but handled properly. more

You won't have to wait in line that's for sure 3/27/2008

EMPTY is the best word to describe this place. How are they still open as the food and service is beyond WEAk? Way to go Brand Sutton as another restaurant closes or will close soon. How does a restaurant next to The Arclight close? Go to GOA soon as it will be next to close! Pros: Location Cons: Service and food, STAY AWAY!!!!!!!!!! more

DO NOT EAT HERE 1/30/2008

I've been 3 times. It's right next to the Arclight complex, so it slurps moviegoers in like a smokey black hole. The first 2 times we had decent food with HORRENDOUS service. So, my girl and I went back 2 months later hoping that the service had improved. It had actually gotten worse and... THE KICKER... I was served RAW HAMBURGER. I've had steak tartar at many a fine restaurant, and I like my meat rare, but I've never been served a raw hamburger. The ""manager"" didn't seem to care that much and ended up comping my burger after protesting a bit. For the love of God, please don't give this restaurant an excuse to stay open. If you want a dope burger, go to the Hungry Cat or Father's Office. Pros: There are pros working here Cons: Raw Hamburgers more

Good food, a bit overpriced 1/24/2008

I was very weary of eating at Charcoal after reading some of the reviews on here, but it wasn't nearly as bad I thought it might be. (Then again, I don't count reviewing the ""flamboyance"" of the wait staff as helpful.) I made a reservation for six for a birthday dinner on a Saturday night. The hostesses and server were both very nice about us having a few late-comers and let us sit before our party was complete (always nice). We had the spinach dip app, which was tasty, but would have been better with bread and not chips. The server recommended some sort of cucumber cocktail that pretty much everyone ended up getting because it was so delish. I ordered the grilled salmon, which was cooked just right, and a few others ordered the filet, which also looked pretty good. We had the upside-down apple pie and lava cake (complete with candle for the birthday boy) for dessert. Both were excellent, but I was definitely partial to the apple pie. My biggest complaints were the auto-gratuity (20%) that was added to our bill (party of six...) and the food was a bit overpriced. Then again, I expect nothing less in Hollywoodland... Pros: Service, apple pie, drinks, atmosphere Cons: Overpriced, auto-grat more

I couldnt find my Filet Mignon in my plate.... 1/17/2008

So I guess from the outside the place looks quite nice, and cozy, warm and romantic...but I do not recomment going there if you got asthma...since as you walk in, you are overwhelmed by the strong smell of fire and charcoal. The service was alright, nothing to really complain about, except the Ceasar salad tasted like it came from a fast food joint. My Filet Mignon was not only quite dry and hard. And was so small I could barely locate it. The mashed potatos which came with it, were somewhat lumpy and not hot at all. The Chicken there did not look grilled at all, and tasted like cardboard. I am surprised that the food for such a place was so much below my expectations. I do not recomment this place for food. I am very dissappointed. more

Uh...not all that 12/21/2007

My friend and I went there on a Thursday night, and made our seating with opentable. He requested a booth, and we got just that. A nice size that could of easily sat 6. So far so good. Keep in mind that right when you walk in the door, you get a strong campfire smell. Really, smell your clothes when you get home. Before we got there, I read the reviews on CitySearch only to find most of them were complaints on service, and poor management. Still, my friend was buying dinner, so I didn't argue. Pros: location, decore Cons: service more

Avoid Bird Head! 11/27/2007

Where do we begin with how terrible this place is? Pros: Menu is good, but the execution of it is not. Cons: Stay away from the midget manager and the cockatiel server! more

Best Burgers! 11/26/2007

After reading the other citysearch reviews, my husband and I were reluctant to try Charcoal but we are glad we did. We shared the wedge salad with blue cheese dressing, which was yummy. We also tried the artichoke dip, which was tasted good but was runny. The best part was the hamburger, which we both ordered. We agreed it was the best hamburger we've ever had! The atmosphere was cool but a bit too dark, the service was exceptional and we will definitely go back! Pros: Best hamburger in town, great service, nice atmosphere, romantic Cons: a little overpriced more

Wear Flannel, Order the Burger 11/2/2007

Yeah, I said it. When in Los Angeles are you ever -allowed- to bear full-on plaid? It's getting cooler out, and the dim, [mesquite] smokey atmosphere of Charcoal begs for your ski lodge attire. But, that said, let's be real, Charcoal is not built into the side of some scenic mountain. No, it's perched right next to one of the greatest--and busiest--movie theaters in LA. Pop in for a burger, a cocktail or a snack to hold you over until after you're finished watching Saw X. Skip Charcoal's upscale attempts though. After all, I suggested you wear flannel--not Armani. Charcoal, in my opinion, is really nothing more than a more flashy Chili's. I love Chili's, but I wouldn't go there for an expensive fish filet. I go to Chili's for grub. In that respect, Charcoal represents. Stay under fifteen dollars on their overpriced menu and you're likely to feel satisfied with what you received. I ordered the cheeseburger and was happy with the oversized bun and crispy fries. My date ordered a steak and was just...whelmed. Pros: Atmosphere, Location Cons: Overpriced more

I can't believe all the nasty reviews! 10/29/2007

I eat at Charcoal frequently. I happen to work in the area so I drop by there for lunch at least once a week and for dinner on Friday evenings. I wasn't a fan of this place when they first opened (food would take too long, come out overcooked, etc..etc..) BUT, in the last 2-3 months this place has become one of my favorites. The servers are always friendly and attentive and getting my drinks refilled is never a problem (even when I only decide to drink water!). The drinks from the bar, while not the most inexpensive, are very strong. I've tried just about everything from the menu at this point and I have to say that I've loved most of what I've had. The cajun ribeye I had a couple weeks back was to die for! The kobe beef appetizer is also wonderful. The salmon is served just right with a nice small side of a very tasty salad. The burgers here are great! They come with sweet potato fries, which I didn't think I'd like since I'm not a fan of sweet potatoes, but they are good! Oh, and they let you substitute the sides if you prefer something else at no cost so you can get your burger with a small salad if you don't want the fries. These are just a few of the items I like on their menu. Have I mentioned that I eat there a lot? This place has a great vibe, good music (although loud on weekend nights), casual, decent prices, and deserves the 5 star rating I gave it. I had a hard time believing all these negative reviews especially since I haven't dealt with most of those things since the place first opened. Then again, people are much quicker to write negative reviews than good ones which is why I thought I should. I would hate for someone to miss out on this place just because some of these reviews on here. Oh and make sure to try their chocolate lava cake for dessert! Pros: Food, Service, Ambience (love the dim lights and candles throughout) Cons: Music on weekend nights does get very loud, wait without a reservation on the weekends can also be a little long more

Horrible! 10/12/2007

One of the worst meals I've had in a long time and the service wasn't much better. The prices are insane for what they're offering. The lemon caper chicken is something you'd make for yourself at home only it would be 100 times better. Raw oysters are hard to mess up, but they manage to do it. If you're looking for a meal before your movie at the ArcLight, you're better off eating at their restaurant or Carls Jr.! Cons: horrible more

$15 Ahi Tuna Sandwich 10/3/2007

If you've got $15 burning a hole in your pocket and you like doughy bread that smells like charcoal and ahi tuna, ORDER THIS SANDWICH. Pros: It smells, um, SMOKEY Cons: It smells, um, SMOKEY more

terrible, terrible, terrible place,THEY STEAL YOUR MONEY BE CAREFULL 9/19/2007

food was terrible(especially appetizer was disgusting), I got a ceaar salad with crab cake which was around $20 and it came with some lettuce and world's smallest crab cakes.after i finished my food I was still hungry.my boyfriend got some Mc donalds burger for another $20. our appetizer was 6 oysters for $10 and it tasted just like sh$#. server was super fake. we even didn't get any refill. everytime we had to wait for him to get things done even the place was empty. they were playing SUPER loud musicand the time we were leaving i got a headache along with a still empty stomach. our bill was $47 and I tipped the server $3 for his terrible service. however this placed showed me what a piece of sh$# their service is by changing my $50 signatured merchant receipt to $56. it's been 4 days and i'm still trying to get $6 back. WORST WORST PLACE EVER. PLEASE DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY .this place is a joke. Pros: nothing Cons: everything, especially stealing more

Worst service in LA 9/14/2007

while the food is pretty good, the horrible service completely ruins any desire to eat there. Having been to Charcoal (I call ""Charhole"") about four times now because I work in the hood, I can honestly say I will never be back. I gave the place a few times because they were new, but by now, they should have it figured out. On a typical afternoon there are about three or four servers and on average, and four tables, one table per server. This unfortunately, is too much for the snobby staff to handle, so good luck even getting a refill of iced tea, for gossiping and ignoring the patrons is more likely on the agenda. It's kind of sad actually, because we were all looking forward to a new eatery in the area, but sadly, this place will never be able to pay the rent. So, if you want overpriced burgers served up with some crappy service, try Charcoal, guranteed to make you feel ripped off. Pros: food Cons: service more

worst service in LA 9/6/2007

This establishment is a favorite of some friends, yet it was a mystery why. The service was...non-existant. Late-night on a weekday and the two bar staff couldn't handle the eight people there. After twenty minutes we asked for drinks several times with a good-hearted nature, that later became annoyance when we were rudely addressed. They were two busy flirting to wait on us. Then when our friend had to ask them to serve us they were totally rude. We asked for a check immediately and we had to ask several times to run our card, then when a drink was spilled no one refreshed it or asked if we would like to purchase anything else. We continued to be ignored and after 10 years of bartending, I chose to stiff the bartender- first time ever. I will never, ever be back nor will I recommend the establishment to anyone. The red-headed and blonde bimbos (male and female) behind the bar knew nothing of customer service or mixology. She tried to make up for her incompetence by giving the party of eight shots for free. The birthday girl insisted I drink it and they were flavorless and weak. Pros: a waste of time and money more

Okay Lunch - Bad Dinner 9/1/2007

I have eaten at Charcoal twice. Last week, for a late lunch before the movies. I had a burger with sweet potato fries. The fries were great. The burger so-so. My friend had the crab burger and garlic fries and he liked them. So I thought I would give it another try. Pros: Sweet Potato Fries and Garlic Fries Cons: Steaks are Terrible and The music is to loud more

Trust Citysearch!! This place is HORRIBLE 8/11/2007

I read the horrible reviews about this place on citysearch, but I decided to give it the benefit of the doubt and try it myself....not to mention I had a 20% off discount letter. We went to get some food before our movie started, I figured they would be used to providing prompt service since they are right next to the Arclight and people have movies to catch. When we first sat down nobody came to our table for about 10-15 minutes. Strike 1. When the waiter finally arrived and took our order, he said they were out of the Lemon Caper Chicken dish that I ordered (it was 6pm...how could they be out of it?!), but he did me a ""favor"" and asked the manager if they had it and it turns out they did. The waiter had no idea what was going on. Strike 2. Everyone else around us who had seemed to get the after us were all getting their food before us, we were getting scared we were going to miss our movie. Meanwhile our waiter was laughing, and having a grand ole time hanging out with his friends three tables away. Eh-hem. Our food finally arrives. Are you serious?! The presentation is better at Del Taco. The disgustingly thick cut of chicken breast smelled as if it came out of the microwave, it looked like it too...it was completely white....no color at all, and the spinach fetticuine was hard....not al dente, it was hard like it had been sitting out for while. It was so unappetizing. Strike 3...this place is out. Seems like they blew the budget on decor, certainly not a chef or an alert staff. But I don't blame the staff, the management seems to be inferior. I spotted the waiter asking the manager about the chicken, and he completely blew the waiter off. He seemed pompous and aloof, completely not in tune with anything that was going on. I thought back to the bad reviews I read and thought to myself how awesome and trustworthy citysearch is. I'm upset we spent any money here at all, even with our 20% off. TRUST CITYSEARCH!! Pros: location Cons: bad food, bad service more
