Best Bourbon Collection in Brooklyn 4/11/2010

The bartenders at Char No. 4 are very knowledgeable and friendly. They know their bourbon and provide an excellent selection served perfectly. The food is definitely deconstructed nouvelle Southern, not ""Southern comfort food"" as some have said. It is, however, delicious, creative and, well, comforting! One of my favorite Brooklyn bars. Pros: Bourbon, delicious food, friendly knowledgeable staff Cons: bit pricey more

Check it out - interesting bacon vibe at brunch 5/2/2009

Booze/bourbon selection is obviously their thing and its impressive - they don't hold back on the pricing though so don't go for a session unless your not feeling the economny - we had brunch and stayed away from the booze. the plates were great, tasty stuff. Would go back Pros: Tasty BK fancy brunch Cons: Small, so you'll wait, sat at the bar. more

Great Atmosphere! 12/20/2008

I've been to Char twice this week already and am planning to go again tonight. Great selection of bourbons but very nice wines as well. Beautiful bar area, nice bartenders and really good food. The chopped pork sandwich is great. It's a great addition to the neighborhood whether you're looking to dine or just have a few drinks at the bar. more

Excellent brunch, pleasant service and a welcome addition to the neighborhood 11/19/2008

Brunch options have all the staples with a special, high-end, twist. The staff was attentive, friendly and accommodating and the atmosphere was relaxed. I loved the food and am eager to go back and try dinner. Pros: Food, Service, Atmosphere more

Looked alot better than it was... 11/15/2008

Char No 4. looks pretty cool when you first come in, nice bar, really cool light fixtures, LOTS of bourbon. However the dining area is extremely cramped and dark. The entire space is very poorly designed and invokes a feeling of claustrophobia. The music is loud and the wait staff is incredibly ditzy. The food was mediocre at best and there were NO vegetarian options for food. The only meat I eat is seafood and even the scallops were served on a bed of ham and the clam chowder had more bacon in it than clams. Overall a pretty unpleasant dining experience. I might go back for a drink but never a meal. Pros: nice bar, cool light fixtures Cons: bad service, no vegetarian options, extremely loud more

It's all about the BLT and Pastrami (oh and booze too) 11/8/2008

I wouldn't exactly call Char's food ""southern comfort food"" as I've seen listed in some reviews. I'm from the south and have never encountered a cheese curd until I went to the mid-west. I also never had pastrami until I moved to the north. Perhaps this is all just a Texas thing? Is Texas the land of cheese curds and pastrami? (The chef hails from Texas.) REGARDLESS I really like this place and you should go. I'm definitely going back. The BLT is delicious and not the BLT one would expect (deep fried pork belly!). The cheese curds are a bit too greasy for me but I would order them again to share. The beef sausage was also quite delicious, juicy, and the flavors of the dish overall were well executed and well balanced. The lamb pastrami (besides the BLT) is the best dish I've tasted on the menu. The service was friendly. I'm not much for whiskey but they have a great bar and a good wine list. The only thing that kind of bothered me was the ""smokey"" smell seems somewhat artificial and a tad bit overwhelming. more
