FREE!!! 3/26/2006

When I attended undergraduate school at the University of Pittsburgh, I frequented the Carnegie Library for different research projects. The staff was always very helpful in assisting me in finding books. Also, since it is a public library, all the items are free. The have a user friendly website, in which you can request books be dropped off. I would recommend this library to anyone. more

I like the library because if I find a book I like, I can borrow it and read it at my leisure for about 3 weeks until I have to give it back. The also good thing is, I can extend the time I have the book online rather than having to go in person. So I can actually get 6 weeks out of it before I have to actually return it. They always have the best selling books, and they also loan out DVDs, which is an easy way to watch the newest release without having to worry about a huge late fee if you are late. more

Calling all book readers 2/22/2006

The Carnegie Library in Oakland , a suburb of Pittsburgh is a gem among libraries across the country. There is a special large section devoted strictly to kids reading. The library immediately adjoins the famous museum of the same name. There are many staff members available to help you find those special books or magazines. Comfortable reading chairs abound throughout. The library has branch centers throughout the Pittsburgh area that can be used as well. Books can be transferred to these satellite locations upon request. We enjoy just spending time browsing through the thousands of books available. Membership is for a minimal fee. If you get a chance, stop in and see what it is all about. more

Perfect for this bookworm 2/2/2006

My earliest memories of a library are from the Carnegie. It's still the benchmark for me of a quality library-- a beautiful building, both inside and out; knowledgeable staff members, and a good selection of books. I highly recommend the Children's library, complete with reading wells and young adult sections. Do ask the librarians for help or for suggestions; they're incredibly friendly. more

Good for some, Lacking for me 11/15/2005

I think Carnegie Library on Forbes is a great freaking library. With that said, it is lacking in many areas. Alot of times they only have one or two copies of very recent, very popular books. In a city of 1,000,000+ people this doesn't work very well. The renovation was amazing-- the new computer and DVD sections are amazing. If you're looking for more scholastic books, you can always go to the Hillman library if you goto Pitt (or the CMU libraries). This is a library for the masses, not for the researcher. more

A library that is first class! 10/29/2005

The Carnegie library of Pittsburgh has several locations but the one here on Forbes Ave is the biggest one. The architecture of the building alone is worth seeing, plus the fact that they have a huge selection of books and media. Their staff is knowledgeable and friendly. The library is also within walking distance to several Oakland sites including museums, the Nationality rooms, restaurants, shops and more. The library also has special programs like summer reading clubs, computer training, and more. more

A world class library 10/9/2005

The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh on Forbes Ave is the biggest library in the city. It is absolutely huge! They have floors of books and friendly staff to help you navigate the library. The computers are available for you to use and you can pay to print pages. You can also reserve books or movies ahead of time and they will contact you when they are available for you to pick up. The library is in a beautiful building that is connected to the History museum, so if you plan on going there, you may consider spending a little extra time to check out the museum. Also, I should mention that traffic/parking is sometimes a hassle. I use the pay parking behind the library as the easiest option. more

Better now that it's renovated but still lacking... 9/6/2005

I first went to the Carnegie Library in Oakland when it was under renovation and found it completely irritating. There were whole sections of books that were just unavailable (usually the sections I wanted) and books kept moving around. Now that it's done, the first floor is quite nice but the upper floors are still confusing to navigate. Also, they frequently don't have books that I want. Their audiobook collection is particularly disappointing. Most of the good audiobooks are in their children's section. I also dislike having to get a new library card every year (I know that's not their fault) and having to enter your library card in order to look things up on the electronic card catalog in the library. Still, free books are pretty cool... more

What a great library 8/18/2005

I went to the Carnegie about four years ago and was not impressed. It was run down, dimly lit, and not welcoming. I went back a few months ago after the renovations were complete and was super surprised at the transformation. The library is so nice now! There is a Crazy Mocha cafe inside, a lot of computers (available for library card holders only), and of course many, many books. The travel section is impressive and set up like a lounge. Self check-out machines are available too. Going to the library is so much more enjoyable now. more
