Editorial review from Citysearch 9/18/2012

Cantina Los Caballitos is commonly understood as THE place to go for margaritas on Saturday nights, but the place really shines during the week, when the crowds stay home. Since starting outside seating a couple years back, they have made the corner of Passyunk and Morris their own, adding flower boxes and colored lights. Grab a happy hour drink or some brunch, and remember you can never go wrong with chicken tacos. more

Went for nachos and sangria over the weekend and sat outside. Had a great time. I will say the servers try to turn over tables way too quickly though, that's never good. more

Good Food, but Terrible Service 6/13/2011

I had drinks and dined with friends on Sunday evening and have to give this place a mixed review. The wait staff is terrible and they have no communication amongst each other. They are all a bunch of incompetent high school students who have the brains of a 1st grader.\r \r It took the waiter 20 minutes to take our drink order after we were seated and another 15 minutes to bring the drinks. I asked the waiter for silverware and napkins for our table and he bring me the items to set the table myself. How rude! The margaritas barely had any alcohol in it, but the food was good. \r \r Overall, I would recommend the other Mexican resturant right down the street on Passyunk Ave. more

Good food - Worst service ever 3/24/2011

I would have loved to stay longer and had a few more drinks but the waitress couldn't get us out of there fast enough.. we went at 8:30 and by 9:15 she was clearing off our food while we were still eating it! my daughter ordered cookies and cream cake that the ""waitress"" raved about.. I thought we were going to go in to a sugar coma... when I complained about the cake, instead of her taking it back and taking it off the bill, she arrogantly voiced that it was her favorite cake and that was the last piece and she really wanted it.. needless to say.. that's the first and last time I'LL EVER GO THERE! more

Ok.... 1/26/2009

Went there on a Saurday night and the place was packed? The drinks weren't bad, and the food wasn't the BEST but our company made up for it. I don't think I would go back due to the fact that it didn't leave a last impression. Pros: Diverse crowd Cons: Parking more

mexican food 7/20/2008

so..... you want mexican, good food, great service, affordable prices, somewhere you want to come back to again and again....... Cantina Los Caballitos is not your place. The hostess threw down our menus, our waitress took forever and a siesta for our drinks. plus she forgot what we ordered. Trek all across town to go here .... never. The food was a major letdown. Black-beans in a blender do not make a sauce. Go here - even if it were on my corner... never. I had such high expectations. I am dissapointed. \r If you want GOOD mexican food, head to Lolita. But not on the night I am going- I want a table. Pros: good spot in the middle of nowhere Cons: everything food and beverage related more

Awesome Breakfast Burrito 5/1/2008

My girlfriend and I had brunch at the Cantina a couple of weeks ago and we couldn't have been happier. The food was great, the coffee was good, and the service was really nice. We were seated right away. They played music that I like. I mean, what's not to like? You'd have to be a total fun-hater not to like this place. Pros: Yummy Food Nice Music Cons: I don't live closer to it more

Excellent brunch. Tasty drinks. Good atmosphere. 3/10/2008

After a fairly rough night of celebration, several friends and I were looking for some brunch to soothe our hangovers and get us moving on a sunny Sunday afternoon. A friend recommended we meet her at the Cantina. We had an unwieldy party of seven, but we were seated promptly.\r The salsa was very fresh and tomato-y. The tomatillo salsa was a nice change of pace. Everyone seemed to love their food. My burrito was spectacular as was my Bloody Maria. All the dishes were reasonably priced as well.\r As I had such a nice time, I just wanted to speculate a bit. The three reviews prior to my own are all one star and were all written on the same day. Does that seem terribly likely? It seems like someone had a bad time here or has it in for the restaurant or one of its employees. The writing style is all fairly similar as well. Trying to bring the rating down, perhaps? I think you and your fiancee/boyfriend/fiancee need to lighten up. Pros: food, atmosphere, drinks, and a really nice bathroom! Cons: service just slightly flaky, a little too much mixer to booze ratio on the drinks more

Nice Bar, Bad food 10/11/2007

I have passed by Los Caballitos several times, and it looked like a great Mexican restuarant. My boyfriend and I walked through the door, and we were very happy with the atmosphere and the people working there were friendly. We sat down and were served cold tortilla chips that propbably came from a bag. We were served a red salsa and a green salsa that tasted the same. It was like nothing I had ever tasted in a Mexican restuarant. There wasn't much to choose from the menu. My favorite spanish meal is enchiladas, and they were not on the menu. My second choice would have been Chimichangas, and they were not on the menu either. If they want to keep customers coming back they are going to have to add more things to the menu. They are trying to put a twist to authentic mexican dishes, but it is not working. Another disappointment was that rice and beans did not come with your meal. Everything was ala-carte. I ordered spanish rice and it wasn't good at all, I only took one bite. It was really that bad. I hope they improve their menu because I do like the atmosphere, but the food was horrible. Pros: Atmosphere, service Cons: Food!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! more

Not what I expected 10/11/2007

I went to Los Caballitos for the first time on Thursday, October 11th. I was very disappointed with the food and somewhat disappointed with the service. My fiance, myself and her daughter were seated and it was chilly enough in the restaurant that we couldn't even remove our jackets. We were given lunch menus which were only good until 5pm and we arrived at 5:45 pm. We were given a small plate of tortilla chips which were cold and not nearly enough for three people. When we were finally given the regular dinner menus we were all very disappointed in the limited selection. We all settled for something that we would not have even considered at any other mexican restaurants we had been to in the past. The dinners were all a la carte and we were used to rice and beans or other sides being included with the meal. The prices were more than we have paid at any other mexican restaurants we have been to, and I'm not talking about fast food mexican. I ordered the crispy tilapia tacos, and they were not good at all. I had refried beans as a side dish and I was disappointed in them also. We are not big alcohol drinkers so I can't speak about the margaritas. Overall I was very disappointed with the meal and the service was average at best. Needless to say I would not reccommend this restaurant to anyone, in fact I would reccommend to anyone that they not even waste there time in this establishment. Pros: service was average Cons: food, price, parking more

big disappointment 10/11/2007

I had passed by this resturant several times and told my fiance we should try it out. I love mexican food and have been searching for a great mexican resturant. When we finally went we found the atmosphere very charming, however, the so called ""Mexican"" food was not. The menu was very limited and we felt we had to settle for what we would have never chosen at another mexican resturant. When we did get our food it was not even close to any other mexican resturant we've eaten at in the past. It was also the only mexican resturant I've ever eaten at that was ala carte. We found it to be pricey for what we got and the food didn't seem to be of good quality. I had spanish rice and it was so bland I couldn't finish it. Needless to say I would not recommend Los Caballitos as a good choice for a mexican resturant. If you only want drinks and an appetizer you might be okay. Pros: Ambience, service Cons: Food, price, quality more

i heart the Cantina 10/6/2007

The Cantina Los Caballitos is one of the best new(ish) additions to Passyunk East. The food is absolutely fantastic and the ""appetizers"" are large enough to feed two people and leave you stuffed. The staff is always friendly (albeit occasionally forgetful), but they're all gorgeous to look at, so who cares? Some of my favorites--the empanadas, especially the beef with oaxaca cheese. The goat burrito is to die for, and the pork tacos are fantastic. For a yummy little side treat, try the garlic shrimp. The shrimp are huge, the garlic sauce is incredible and the little chunks of roasted garlic are nothing to sneeze at. \r \r And the price is great--2 entrees, 3 drinks, and 2 cups of coffee was only $44.\r They're my new favorite hangover cure--a mojito and a cup of coffee.\r \r They're a little stingy on the guac though. Pros: awesome food, huge poritions, low prices Cons: where's my damn guacamole??? more

addicting 9/17/2007

their interpretation of Mexican is rather loose but what they come up with is fun, tastey and they?ve earned their creative license. (and, um, yeah. Mexican restaurants should always give you chips and salsa when you sit down. folks that seem surprised by this, well . . . ?????)\r \r The atmosphere is very romantic in an indy let?s drink one too many negro modelos kind of way. It?s fun when packed with local hipsters, confused when neighborhood south philly ruffians find their way to watch a game. Luckily they don?t stay because no one gives them positive reinforcement for shouting at the tv.\r \r The juke box is excellent ?yes, a real juke box- which means that bad music choices can?t be made by random patrons with no taste in music. \r \r You see, that?s really the genius of a real juke box rather than those ?internet? box things. \r \r Oh, and the servers are hawt, in the bike messenger genre. Pros: prickly pear margaritas, just for fun Cons: crowded more

I don't get it 9/14/2007

I understand there are few options in South Philly, but this place was horrible. The service was rude and inept, the margaritas were rather pricey considering they used tequila that tasted like rubbing alcohol and sour mix instead of fresh juice, and the food was bland, boring, and served cold. I ended up eating half my entree and then filling up at the taqueria across the street, which I highly recommend. more

Great food and even better margaritas 7/13/2007

The Catina is a great place to eat, drink and enjoy good company. The food is amazing and priced well. The margaritas are probably some of the best in Philly. The prickly pear margaritas are even more delicious than they look. The reason the Cantina did not receive 5 Stars was because of a discrepency on the happy hour menu. The menu states ""half priced house pitchers of margaritas"", it does not state only the original margarita pitchers as ""the house flavor"". When I approached management they explained to me that only the regular pitchers are half price. After some words, they gave us the discount. The Catina needs to explain that not all pitchers are half price. 5 Stars without the attitude from the management about the wording of the happy hour menu. I will be back for more amazing drinks and great food. This was 1 of 5 times that I was dining there that I had the happy hour problem. Pros: margaritas, the view on a nice day and the margaritas Cons: The management not excepting the mistake on the happy hour menu more

Great. Just Great. 4/11/2007

This place is great. The food is incredible. The free chips and salsa are yummy. The food and drink menus are both extensive. This is my go to place for when I'm out with a large group. The pitchers are huge and get the job done. To the person who didn't know there was going to be pineapple in her Al Pastor tacos, that's what is in Al Pastor tacos. Pineapple and pork.\r \r My favorite food items though are the ceviches. There's one on the menu that is very good, but they usually offer another 2-3 as daily specials and they are possibly the best ceviches in the city. Pros: Great Food. Great Drinks. Cons: Not closer to my house. more

Disappointing-hope it was just a bad night 3/7/2007

I was very excited to try this place and very disappointed. The biggest disappointment was receiving 2 half filled margaritas while waiting for our table. Never have I received a half full drink at any bar. The staff seemed overwhelmed which I think is why the drinks came up short; it was Friday night prime time. They were tasty though. I was also dissapointed in the special I ordered: Tacos Al Pastor (?). Didn't know it would have pineapple and didn't like it and also surprised to receive white rice at a mexican restaurant. I am a big fan of The Royal and hope these are just some kinks they are working out. Also had an altercation with some very drunk people hanging out in front of the door when leaving who were yeling negative comments about Vietnamese people. Though I don't believe this to be the restaurant's fault, I think they should be aware of very rude drunk people literally blocking the door on the way out. On the brighter side, our server Melissa B was excellent! Pros: great server Cons: half full drinks more

Best Mexican Restaurant in Philadelphia 1/13/2007

I have been to many Mexican restaurants in Philadelphia and the surrounding area and this restaurant is by far my favorite. I am a vegetarian and it has so many delicious options. The black bean soup and vegan fajitas are to die for. You get free chips and fabulous salsas to start - which is great. The strawberry frozen margaritas were amazing. The servers were very attentive and I love the dim lighting - it's romantic! Pros: Margaritas!! Cons: Can't think of one. more

Very Fun Bar 12/28/2006

This place has great drins, good food and poor service. My friends and Igo here at least once a week. It's just really fun to sit around and drink a couple of pitchers of margaritas and snack on some nachos or tacos. As has been said already, the jukebox is one of the best in town and this place rocks. My only complaint is that the service can be a little rude, but after a couple of margaritas, nobody cares. Pros: Drinks, Food, Prices Cons: Service, Attitude more

Best New Bar 12/27/2006

The Cantina is easily Philly's best new bar this year. The margaritas are great and the food is outstanding. It's got a killer jukebox and the bar crowd is always hopping. I am usually a fan of traditional and not flavored margaritas, but I love the orange margaritas here. In fact I wish I had one right now. Pros: Margaritas, Food, Parking Cons: Dimly lit more
