Good appetizers and salads; a bit overrated 4/10/2007

CPK is consistent, good, and pretty reasonably priced, but the way people talk about it you'd think it was the best food on earth! I don't really understand why there is always a huge line at this location - the food and ambience is definitely not THAT great. The appetizers are delicious, however - my favorites include the spinach-and-artichoke dip, spring rolls, chicken lettuce wraps, and warmed herb focaccia with tomato. The salads are also tasty, and there are tons of different kinds. However, their namesake pizza is just okay - the selection is great, but you can get much better pizza elsewhere (for less money). It's fun to go here once in awhile, but I wouldn't make it a regular spot. The patio seating with heat lamps is quite nice however, especially on a bustling night in Westwood when there is a premiere going on. Pros: location, appetizers, selection Cons: so-so pizza, long waits more

great pizza and pasta dishes 3/7/2007

This restaurant is right by my apartment, and I never get sick of going there. Possibly because they have a nice variety of pasta, pizza, and salad dishes so I can switch it up ever so often. My favorite pizzas are the Barbeque Chicken Pizza and the Santa Fe Pizza. Salads I would recommend are the Waldorf Chicken Salad and the CPK Cobb salad, and for the pastas, I love the ravioli if you're looking for something heavier. The service is friendly and fast for the most part, and tt's usually quick seating, though parking can be a pain. Pros: delicious dishes, fairly priced Cons: parking more

Isn't CPK Corporate Watching??? 11/12/2006

For starters, I'd like to say that I love CPK's food. It's fairly-priced, good-portioned, and generally likeable. However, there is something wrong with this West-LA location, right in the heart of UCLA's Westwood. The food is subpar (comparing with other CPKs), and the service leaves much to be desired. The waitstaff is rarely smiling, possibly because they're all young college kids who only want my tip but hate their jobs. The MAIN gripe of mine is the Spinach & Artichoke Dip. Normally, CPK has the absolute BEST S&A Dip, hands down. However, I've been to the Westwood CPK many times and left disappointed every single time!! The chips are always stale, and the dip is always clearly very old, because the green coloration of the cream shows that it's been sitting with the spinach for far too long. The taste, of course, is almost unbearable. A couple times I've asked for at least fresher chips, and they simply proceeded to heat up the chips I already had and return them to me. Ridiculous. If you like CPK, stay away from this one; if you've never had CPK, don't start at this one. Basically, stay away from this California Pizza Kitchen at all costs. Pros: Can't think of one, to be honest. Cons: Does not meet CPK standards, whatever those may be. more

People nowadays flock to trends rather than go on quality 9/3/2006

I've been here several times over, and only because the majority won. CPK has nothing going for it besides its trendiness and accessibility. If one were to ask a proprietor or chef in a very upscale restaurant about the quality of CPK's food, they would not be ranting about it. Their chintzy hands (they're held to exacting amounts, by protocol) yield just enough ingredients to live up to their menu description, but not enough to satisfy. (A piece of parsley as garnish would be enough reason for them to include it as a significant ingredient in a dish, if you get my drift.) Sure servings look big, but only because a mound of pasta is inexpensive, much like a round of dough that can be spread out to a large diameter. Remember that commercial where they asked "Where's the beef?!?" Well, the same premise holds here. The caliber of the food is nothing to brag about. Boy, the herd mentality of our population is all about quanitity versus quality. Again, try asking a chef at places like GiRaffe or Chinois or L'Orangerie whether or not they think the food is good quality, and I'd bet they'd perhaps enjoy it, but not rave about it. Pros: Menu offers up selections for most diners Cons: Overrated, average quality, mundane more

Perfect for anything 7/2/2006

I've been to CPK for late lunch, early dinner, just drinks, late night date, and birthday party with friends. It's the perfect setting for all of these things. It can get a little noisy and the wait can get long, as it's popular with kids and the surrounding college campus, but definitely worth it. The pizzas and salads are always perfect- I've never had a bad experience with anything I've ordered. The wait staff is almost always friendly and fast, except when they're really really busy. I did have one waiter who basically accused my dining partner of using a fake ID (although he was really 21) when ordering a drink, but I suppose that goes with the territory of dining in a college town. All in all, I'd highly recommend it for almost any occasion. Pros: Great service, food, and value Cons: Not much more

Standard chain restaurant food 3/17/2005

The food isn't bad for a chain restaurant. Of course, it's the self-proclaimed home of the BBQ chicken pizza which is pretty good. I personally am not a big fan of their pizzas - pasta dishes are quite good. The appeal of this location is more for the convenience - right across the street from the Mann Village Theater. more
