WOW $2 is too much to spend at this place 3/26/2008

I NEVER write reviews but after reading the reviews for this place I feel it is my responsibility as a food lover as well as Vietnamese to express my opinion. This place has got to the be the worst Vietnamese cafe/deli I've ever eaten, wait...2nd place, the top honor really goes to Lee's Sandwiches. Maybe because there are so few Vietnamese restaurants in midtown and so people are forced to lower their standard or something, but people totally overrate this restaurant. It's pure crap. Sure it's cheap, but all Vietnamese delis are cheap. Their soup sucks, their sandwiches suck, their service sucks although the latter will always suck in any Vietnamese delis. If you really want Vietnamese food in this area then I guess you're limited to your choices. If you just want a good Vietnamese sandwich, go to Don's Cafe on Bellaire in China town. Best ever. As for the Pho, the only restaurant that's good is the Pacific restaurant/Thai Binh Duong on Bellaire accross from Hong Kong 4. Don't go to Pho Saigon please...or Tau Bay for that matter. more

Buyer Beware 12/22/2006

I ordered a soy milk a couple of weeks ago and was surprised at how good it was (fresh-pressed), so on my next visit (lunch, yesterday) I ordered it again but this time asked for it without any ice and the lady (the serious and I think scary-looking one who never smiles; this day she was wearing a beret on her head) nods in assent and takes the order without verbal comment. Then she brings the soy milk and says "Three dollars" and I'm not very happy about this and say " I thought it was two dollars" and she says "No ice" and does what I assumed was some kind of cursing in Vietnamese (whether it was specifically directed at me, or expressed something more general, I don't know). Later she brings my meal (tofu-noodles) and after eating a few bites, I felt nauseated, so I had to stop eating and had my friend pack it in a takeout box while I went outside for some fresh air. I figured it might have been the soy milk or the onset of a slight flu (though I'm hardly ever sick) and felt better after some hours (and ate some enchiladas from a Mexican place for dinner). So earlier today (the day after) I'm feeling healthy as a horse and take the Cali's leftovers out of the fridge for lunch and eat a few bites and again feel immediately nauseated. I almost suspect that the food might have been tampered with, incredible as it sounds -- or else it was just spoiled food. In any case, I've developed a dislike for Cali's and won't return. more

Great food for little money! 8/20/2005

This is another Vietnamese restaurant in Houston’s "Little Vietnam" district. Cali Sandwich Shop offers more than just a good Vietnamese sandwich. They also make a mean bowl of pho (Vietnamese noodle soup). This is a very small restaurant but the food is always delicious and very affordable. The service is fast and the people are friendly. This is the kind of place that you will pat yourself on the back just for knowing about. more

great place 8/20/2005

this restaurant serves some of the best vietnamese and chinese food in houston. the place serves many types of food. my parents, both sticklers of vietnamese, even commented on how good the food tasted. the sandwiches are also varied, and quickly made for you. you really get more bang for your buck here: the prices are quite good compared to those of other places in the city. more
