Worst Italian Restaurant in Boston 5/21/2012

My Wife and I visited Boston last week. We spend one afternoon at the North End Italian Section. After feeling hungry we stopped at the Pompeii Restaurant. When the Waitress seated us, I had the feeling that she had en attitude problem. The Radio was playing in the background and it seamed it was betweentwo station, very static. My Wife ordered 2 pieces of Pizza and I choose a Sandwich with sparkling Water. When the food arrived we ask the Waitress for hot pepper. After waiting for some time, I got up and got it myself. My sandwich was the worst, I ended up eating only half. After eating the first slice oft his awful greasy Pizza my Wife detected a long HAIR on the Second slice. As we pointed it out to the Waitress, she ripped the Plate from us, giving us a dirty look as of it was our fault. Instead apologizing to us, she slammed the check on the table.(the one piece was was removed from the check) I'm curious to know, who would give this place a good review(must be friends). It was the worst experience we ever had in any restaurant, and of course we would never return to it again. If I could give it o Stars it would be appropriate. If I could summed up the Food it would be 1, Service and friendliness and ambiance 0. more

charged $150 for $36 meal!! 8/28/2011

so i went out to dinner at Cafe Pompeii on friday with 6 other ppl, bill came out to $150 but MY meal was $36-something. they all threw down cash and i gave my card with the slip filled out for my meal and SAYING the rest was cash. THEY CHARGED ME $150 AND KEPT THE CASH. wasn't even worth the $36--- i got $14 piece of chicken that was smaller than my hand and tasted like bacon, split antipasti for 2 that was only enough for ONE when the waitress said it could feed half the table, fried calamari (when I saw how small my meal was) and split an overpriced bottle of white zin that I would normally spend less than $20 on. if there were a 0-star rating, i'd give it. more

Best Cappuccino on a Snowy Day 2/16/2010

Looking out my window confirmed I was no longer in New Orleans. Snow fell heavy and my aversion to turning on the heat left me cold. What was I to do? The answer was obvious: the best cappuccino in Boston -sorry Crema- Pompeii has you beat. The lack of foam drawn hearts or pot-leafs takes nothing away from the taste of this made-to-order warming caffeine form. Step through the restaurant to the tiny one-man bar in the back and order up. As the snow falls you'll be warmed by perfection. Pros: Cappucinno Cons: no complaints at all more

Oh dear 12/8/2009

Rude and aggressive staff, no ambience. Soooo many better places to eat in the neighborhood - don't waste your time. Pros: Mediocre pizza Cons: Everything else more

The worst place to eat in boston 10/15/2009

Worst italian place possible. Do not go here. The food and the service are mediocre at best. Apart from this, the owner of the place is a jerk. He treated me and my friend disrespectfully. When we asked him why he was treating his customers this way we got jumped by 10 guys of the italian mafia. I had a black eye for 3 weeks after and was severely bruised, my friend got 10 stitched. Also two friends of a friend got jumped there and had a bottle broken over their head. I later found out that this is a mob hangout. Ever wonder why this is the only place that serves sit down dining after 2am? Pros: absolutely nothing Cons: it just sucks more

Overpriced. Fair pizza. 9/5/2008

I stopped by Cafe Pompeii for a couple slices of pizza and a coke. The restaurant itself looks fine. A far amount of people dining. Looks like a fair amount of restaurants of the North End in the evening. Ordered a two slices of cheese and a coke and was blown away by the price (example: $2 for a can of Coke). However, I said to myself ""maybe the pizza is worth the price"". Sadly, it was not. The pizza is average. Nothing to write home about. However, late at night, not many places in the North End still serve slices (so options are limited). So, if you really, really, really want a slice of pizza....it's an option. If not, I would go somewhere else. Pros: Average Pizza, Nice looking restaurant Cons: Value more

IT WAS AMAZING!!!! DON'T BOTHER WITH ANY OTHER REVIEWS 7/17/2007

I thought after reading all of these reviews that i couldnt believe that it was the same place. The food was absolutley fantastic, very reasonabley priced and the wait staff was very friendly. The bus boy was very friendly even to the point of entertaining a customer who was waiting for a friend to arrive. I thought that this was amazing place to dine. Pros: Wait Staff, Prices, Food Cons: All the other reviews more

So it wasn't just me! 9/2/2006

I was visiting boston and went to Little Italy with two other coworkers and stumbled upon Pompei. From the outside, the restaurant decor looks decent, the menu was appealing. However, when we asked for a table, we were put in the basement where the ambience was completely different. Our table was wobbly, the restaurant wasn't very clean, I had to ask for 3 different glasses before getting a clean one. Our waiter was an idiot and extremely unprofessional. He was trying to figure out the prices of the dishes we ordered so that it could save him time to do the calculations afterwards...what the heck is that?! That made us worry very much about our food, but to our surprise, the food was actually quite good and portions were big. Finally, to remind us of their poor service, when we asked for a receipt for reimbursement purposes, the waiter gave us this meaningless stub. Will not be back for sure! Pros: hot food Cons: service, ambience, cleaningness more

Please avoid it like you would the plague! 3/19/2006

I went with my 7 year old daughter and a friend. The waitress looked at us like we were crazy when my daughter asked to use the bathroom. Once we came back we had to seat ourselves and after 5 mins of chatting behind us we had to ask for menus. It took her 15 mins t o come back to the table and tell us the specials. She was rude and never refilled our drinks. We got up several times to ask for more water and she then brought out the bill before we were done eating. She never asked if we wanted dessert and we then had to get up to pay the bill after waiting for her to come back to the table. When we got up the person at the back were the coffee is told us that it wasn't her job to be our cashier. Pros: Food Cons: Staff, Staff, staff more

Horrific Service 1/29/2006

Our waitress spilled my friends soda on her lap, normally not a big deal. But when she NEVER apologized, didnt clean up the mess and NEVER replaced the soda we started to get pissed. The buss boy who barely mopped the floor and left the table dripping with sticky soda and ice cubes, slammed the metal chair causing us all the jump and half the restaurant to turn around didn't blink an eye. When we told our waitress about his aggressive behavior she responded by informing us that, ""that's just the way he is"". What?! We were still charged for the soda that my friend never drank and my other friends calzone was overcharged by $5.00. We told the manager about our experience. He never apologized, he just told us we didnt have to pay for the soda. Our waitress didnt drop off the bill, some random bus boy did. Pros: cheap food, comic value Cons: terrible service more

Awful! Just awful! 10/2/2005

I went here for a friend's birthday. We were seated late and the waitress did not come over for 20 minutes. She got my friend's order wrong and didn't write my order down. No apology. Spoke to manager who was also not apologetic. We started our meals while the other 6 finished. Neither waitress not manager came over to check on us during meal. Bill came and nothing was taken off for mistakes-plus 20% gratuity was added...such nerve. When asked to put some on credit card and give us change of 2 twenties (since there were 6 of us paying separately), waitress just returned bill minus money...said that $ was hers. Sounds crazy, I know. Worse if you lived through it. DO NOT waste your time or money. Cons: ambience, staff, mediocre food more

Bustling Bistro, Consistent Quality 6/1/2005

I like Pompei because it offers a menu full of tempting options and is less expensive than other North End restaurants. Our waitress was prompt and did a great job meeting our requests. We got in on a Sunday evening without reservations, but it was definetely still crowded. Great people watching. A little crowded and noisy for an intimate conversation. Pros: People watching, inexpensive Cons: Crowded more

Only for late night dining purposes 3/2/2005

I go here probably once or twice a month, even though overall, it probably has the most mediocre food and service in the North End. That's because it's open very late and does the basics okay. If you are coming out here for a special night, this is definitely not the place. If you are starving at midnight after a long night of drinking at the Sail Loft, then Cafe Pompeii is perfect. Reasonable and passable fare. Pros: Open late Cons: Mediocre food more

marvelous mussels! 10/18/2004

Craving mussels, we stopped at Cafe Pompei, mostly because there was no line. It was wonderful! The bread was warm and crusty with a chewy center, and the mussels marinara were the best I've had in some time. Service was great, a perfect date. We're going back this week. Pros: great food, great service, great ambience more

The next door pizzeria was better 10/14/2004

Overpriced for fast food italian style TV dinner that took 40 minutes to get to our table. We thought we were the only ones with the bad deal, but when our food came out, it came out for some of the folks that were there when we arrived. Poor people waited longer than us. Those folks got bread on their table though. We had to ask for it. Good luck to those who believe the positive ratings for this restaurant. more

Disregard other entries! 5/26/2004

Cafe Pompei is by far the best bistro I have ever gone to. The owner, Tony saw that I was out with my girlfriend and gave us a private seat in the corner. Then proceded to reccommend particular dishes that he thought we might enjoy. The food was beyond amazing and the service was perfect. Let me tell you she loved it so I got some lovin that nite if ya catch me... TOP NOTCH NITE OUT AT POMPEI!! more

Hovering Wait Staff 10/24/2002

Food is great but the wait staff tend to wait around after you have finished eating even, in our case, when you have a half bottle of wine left. more
