If you're looking to go out for the night by yourself, then I'd definitely give this place a try. It's hidden and I really liked the ambience of the Parisian style setting. You ...

Finally got a chance to go and check out this place for lunch. Service was fine, but the food was below expectation. What was good? The Pate. The highlight of the meal. Wha...

this one just isn't cutting it for me. 2/8/2009

Built on reputation and no solid follow-up to keep it. Sadly, this restaurant has been so spoiled for the Loehmann's shoppers that they've forgotten what made them great. The food has since turned to mediocre, and the passerbys gawking at you has become a huge nuisance. Oh not that I have anything against sidewalk cafes or eateries, they're tons of fun, but this one just isn't cutting it for me. more

One of my favorite restaurants 7/29/2006

I love the steak tartare -- and unlike many other restaurants, the waiters will mix it for you at the table. My favorite treat is to go there after shopping on a Saturday afternoon, sit outside, sip a nice pinot noir, and have lunch. I've never had a bad experience there -- either for service or food. more

Cute French restaurant 6/11/2006

I went here with friends and enjoyed it. It's a bit out of the way but very close to shopping at Union Square so it's worth a trip. A nice trip to Europe within San Francisco. more

Wonderful charming French Cafe-Restaurant 1/25/2006

OH LA LA...they have everything so right ...down to the wine recommendations, the outdoor cafe table settings, the live jazz in the evenings...and of course the best 'pommes frites' ( french fries!)! Perfect for a business lunch or an incredible romantic 'Paris" rendez-vous! Nicolas, the head-waiter, if needed, will expertly guide you through a wonderful meal! (He used to work at L'EPI DUPIN in the 6th, Paris! ). Very vegetarian friendly, too! When you would like that little bit of PARIS ...you will find it at CAFE CLAUDE in San Francisco! more

A slice of Paris 8/13/2005

Recently some friends and I went to Cafe Claude to check out their renovation. They've done a great job and improved on an already great formula. The interior is warmer and cozier. Great for a date or small group. The food is perfect french bistro, delicious and affordable. The specials were outstanding. We particularly liked the Poulet Roti and the Coq au Vin. If you want a real treat, order the Steak Tartare. The service was warm and attentive. Our waiter would appear exactly when we needed a refill in our wine glasses. It gets busy on weekends with live music, but it all adds to a great night. We'll be back. more

  • Cafe Claude is an intimate French bistro serving classic French dishes, including onion soup, coq au vin and steak frites. Located on European-styled Claude Lane, close to Union Square.

Editorial
  • The Scene
An L-shaped dining room with expansive ceilings and buttery yellow walls adorned with black-and-white prints of Paris and vintage movie posters give this boite a warm, authentic feel. That's no coincidence: Tables, chairs, mirrors and the zinc-topped bar were shipped directly from Le Barbizon, a French brasserie. Friendly waitstaff, sleekly dressed in black, almost all boast French accents but none of that infamous Parisian snootiness.

    The Food
Familiar bistro fare, such as rich French onion soup topped with fat croutons and gruyere cheese, share menu space with more fusion-friendly picks, like kobe steak tartare. The steak tartare is served with cornichons, capers, egg yolk, mustard, parsley, croutons and shallots, while the truffle mousse with chicken livers is accompanied by crepes marinated in sherry. The moelleux au chocolate, a velvety chocolate cake drizzled with crème anglaise, is pure decadence. Specialty martinis tempt, but the real treat is the international wine list with abundant by-the-glass picks.
