Great pre-theater restaurant 4/11/2012

This place is a hidden gem in the Upper West Side. My friend suggested we go there before our 8pm show and I am glad I discovered this place. The food is non pretentious but very good. I had the Trout which was served with a tasty chick pea and celery salad and my friend had the codfish: equally delicious. The staff is efficient and friendly. They are obviously used to the pre-theater crowd and they make sure your food comes out on time. We had such a great meal that there was little space for dessert so we opted for biscotti and capuccino! A nice laid back atmosphere and good food. I recommend it more

Good food, annoying service 12/26/2010

This is quite a fine place...good comfort foods-though the staff is a bit bothersome. more

Upper West Side Classic 11/28/2009

I suppose its the Balthazard of the Upper West Side, a brasserie like place that is great for brunch lunch or dinner. Big with the theatre crowd, we like to go there before walks in the park (mostly in winter since this place gets no light and is very warm). Had brunch at the bar last week, 2 egg dishes and 2 mimosas and dropped $80. Not sure its worth the price tag but if you choose more carefully off the menu (we got the specials) you should be able to do better... Pros: Classic joint & dishes Cons: Can be expensive for what it is more

Have never stiffed a waiter until now 3/8/2009

I have lived in NYC for over a decade and have yet to recieve such poor service. Our waiter was rude and inept. Our main course was overcooked and over salted. Brian, our waiter, continued to ignore us while we sat in the midst of a milling crowd of arriving guests who hovered over our table. He then followed us out of the restaurant to complain about the lack of tip he received. Cons: service, food more

Upper West Side Staple 3/1/2009

I have been coming to Cafe Luxembourg for twenty plus years and while it has some ups and downs, the past few years it has been one of the most reliable restaurants on the city. The wait staff has always been attentive and the menu, while constantly changing, has always provided a great selection of good food. Rarely do I leave Cafe Luxembourg without having had a good meal. Pros: attentive waitstaff more

Still Wonderful & Grown Up - a Few Extra Bucks but Worth It. 1/13/2009

I have to say that I am always skeptical of faux brasseries (and what other type of brasserie is there in NYC?). One too many crusty-mirrored, darkly lit - and weeks-old - restaurant has turned me sour on the idea of French neighborhood shabby chic anywhere in Manhattan. However, Cafe Luxembourg has a particular magic in location, decor and energy that make it seem utterly genuine. In the end, the food is what matters, and it doesn?t disappoint. The choices are pleasantly familiar and are all perfectly prepared. A particular favorite of mine is the schnitzel pork chop, but you can?t go wrong with steak frites or ? well, you just can?t go wrong. Expect a mob scene before (and to some extent after) any show at Lincoln Center but rest assured that the staff is efficient and always seems to accommodate reservations on time. Better prices can be found elsewhere - but it is exceptionally consistent and worth the extra bucks. Pros: atmosphere, Lincoln Center location, consistently good food, a classic Cons: price, crowded more

Bad Bad Bad 4/24/2007

The ambiance is horrific and the food is even worse! Maybe it's because there aren't that many restaurant is the UWS but the food is pathetic to be even considered premier european food! How did this restaurant not go out of business beats me! more

I wish the food were a little bit better 2/16/2007

Stopped by for lunch today for the first time in about 5 years. The atmosphere has not changed much - a good thing since it's a nice, relaxed vibe. The food, however, could be a little better. If I'm going to spend $15 for an omelette I would like chunks of black forest ham in it and not chopped up deli meat like you would find at a corner deli. The service was very good and attentive. Pros: Nice ambiance, nice classic zinc bar Cons: Too little food for the money more

Nasty tude 2/1/2007

Maybe I was over dressed -- I was wearing a jacket and tie after work. Or too polite -- ""hi, can I please get a ..."" Whatever it was, I was shocked at the treatment I received at this place. I sat down at the near empty bar and waited and waited for some service. The bar tender gave me the once over and must have found something he didn't like (even though I shower regularly and am fairly presentable) because he pointedly served several people who sat down after me before coldly asking me ""do you want anything?"" I ordered a martini and then, maybe in spite, ordered something to eat from the menu. Don't think he liked that. It probably wasn't just me the guy didn't like. I overheard him bad mouthing several regular patrons mi-voix. Would love to know what he said about me. Pros: decent food Cons: bizarrely rude staff with a strange value system more

Great food, service and atmosphere for a meal. 1/1/2007

First time here for me and another of several vists here for my girlfriend. After a quick drink at the bar (which has a great by the glass wine selection) we were promptly seated and attended to. Our server was cheerful, didn't rush us but kept us pn schedule to make a 7:30pm curtain. The food was outstanding, the pork chop was perfectly cooked and paired wonderfully. My girlfriend had great reviews on the NY strip steak. For desert we had french profiteroles. Our roommate is french and had happened to make them earlier in the week and these were every bit as good and dare say they were excellent. I would recommend dining here and will be sure to return. Pros: Great Service more

Waiter chased me out the door!!!! 11/17/2006

After the waiter - who was generally overwhelmed all night - broke a glass at our table by dropping it on my shoulder before it shattered on my dinner plate, I thought the night could not be less impressive. I used to be a waitress, so I give pretty wide latitude on service issues. I also left a 20% tip. Pros: Great ambience Cons: Waiters running down street screaming at customers more

fantastic service 8/4/2006

Being a former employee of the Odeon in Tribeca, I had a free meal ticket to spend here. I took my boyfriend for a dinner, and it was great. I was not surprised to see the same Odeon layout of dinnerware, bread and butter, and the menu was somewhat similar but not such a grand dining room. We ordered the somewhat average steak tartare and proceded for entrees with the skate in muscle broth (a great choice if u love muscles) and lamb. I can't remember every detail but it was a great dinner. Wine was reasonably priced (somewhat... I remember that the Veuve Yellow Label was about $120 and I work in a well-known restaurant in Meatpacking where it is $90.) We had a great cheese plate for dessert and then went to the movies. I want to say that our service was amazing (wish I had gotten his name, but it was several fridays ago at the end of june), and we enjoyed ourselves greatly and left quickly. Pros: beef tartare, lamb, service Cons: nothing. more

Divine Lux 7/20/2006

Great spot- fun casual bar scene- great food- great service- great atmoshpere. Get anything with the pate! Beats next door neighbor Compass by leaps and bounds. Pros: Bar scene, wine selection Cons: can get a little pricey for a cafe style restaurant more

A good standby 7/25/2005

Whenever we are not sure where to eat, we always go to Cafe Lux because of their consistent food. While the service may vary, the fish, the chicken and the bistro fare is pretty good. While the onion soup is delicious, it would be nice to see the gruyere cheese oozing everywhere and bubbling over. Cafe Lux is on the pricey side, but it's a wonderful neighborhood restaurant. Pros: location, food, wine list Cons: service, prices more

It Is Average Fare 6/2/2004

Crazy, frenetic pace which adds to the people watching. As for the food, it is way too rich/greasy, whether it was the calamari or grilled chicken. It is incredibly popular and hard to get in no matter what time of day/night - I think it is a testiment to it becoming an institution with a very loyal upper West Side fan base. Pros: service Cons: , wine list more

Great Experience! 10/10/2003

Our favorite place we tried in NYC. The food was absolutely delicious and the service exceptional! A very neighborhoody feel! more

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. 11/25/2002

18 years on, the Upper West Side's Cafe Luxembourg still packs 'em in every night--and not only because they're one of the few viable dining choices in the nabe. The food is consistently good (sometimes great), the pricing is decent, the service is reliable, and the scene is classy, mature and comfortably hip (no overbearing Gwen Stefani lookalikes here). The menu sticks to bistro classics--French onion soup, frisee salad, steak frites, roasted chicken--and throws in a few homey surprises along the way; their wintertime braised oxtail entree with spaetzle is worth a trip uptown. You might even play ""spot the celeb""; I've seen everyone from Liza Minnelli and Bernadette Peters to TV's Caroline Rhea happily basking in the savory food and flattering lighting. Pros: Dependably good food, Celeb spotting, Mature atmosphere Cons: VERY crowded more

Warm and comforting 10/24/2002

What a great place! Everyone seems to know one another. The staff made me feel a part of the place immediately. The food was exceptional...desserts very special Pros: Very Lively, Fabulous food, Friendly Cons: Reservations a must, bar too small more
