Excellent food 2/24/2009

Went there with a party of four. We were all very pleased with the quality of food. In New York there are so many restaurants to try that it takes excellent food and service for me to want to go back a second time. This restaurant makes me want to come back. The salads / apps were excellent. My entree was really outstanding. Had the sole and rice just prepared to perfection. Desert for me was rice pudding with bluberries and carmel. One of the best I ever had. Prices are also reasonable. Really enjoyed it. more

First French dining experience!!!ok 10/9/2008

This was my first French dining experience in the city. I wanted to try a restaurant from the citysearch list and my friend wanted to try a french restaurant. I choose this place because the online menu looked good. Pros: service, food Cons: small more

Charming & delicious! 8/26/2008

Met a friend here recently because he had a City Shuffle Diner's Deck coupon. What a delightful place to check out! For starters, we split the savory white sausage/apple salad appetizer. I enjoyed the free range chicken for my dinner, it was flavored nicely & perfectly cooked, as was the accompanying asparagus & fettuccine - delicious! The wine was good, the service warm & accommodating, the ambiance charming. Tucked away on First Avenue like a well-kept secret (especially from those who don't live nearby & have to schlep from the Lex subway like me), this place is worth returning to! Pros: FOOD, ambiance Cons: far from subway more

BEST undiscovered French bistro in Manhattan 6/5/2008

Cafe Joul is truly a remarkable restaurant. This French bistro has everything going for it. This is a small neighborhood place, well known locally for its ambiance and great food. Picture the interior of Balthazar but smaller, charming and romantic. The food is really really good - typical bistro but outstanding in taste and presentation. The owner/chef is always on the ball and really delivers a superb meal. The duck main course is excellent as is the chicken, accompanied by lemon fettucini and grilled leeks. Also, the nightly specials can't be beat. Weekend brunch is also a favorite - the place gets filled up pretty quickly on a Sunday morning! Heidi, the manager, is always available and makes sure that everyone is comfortably taken care of. The small bar exudes charm and can be used to dine at as well. The atmosphere can be quite romantic with dimmed lighting, period furnishings, and walls filled with original artwork. All in all, Cafe Joul is a neighborhood gem, good for a casual meal or for a special night out as well. It is worth a trip from anywhere in the city. Pros: great ambiance, great value, great bread, too! Cons: i can't think of any more

Sensational authentic Fresh Food ! 10/14/2007

This is the ""perfect ""restaurant for anyone wanting a wonderful dining experience. The soup, salads mussels , salmon , steak , vegatables , deserts etc. are all prepared with top quality ingredients. I'm a regular and always take my friends when visiting from Eurpoe. Each customer is treated with respect, warmth and great service. Pros: thumbs up - great ambience, terrific wine list, excellent service more

Fantastic Gem of a Bistro 7/30/2007

In a neighborhood that otherwise lacks luster on the dining front, Cafe Joul is a brilliant jewel. Zero pretension, the focus here is the FOOD. It's very good, in fact suprisingly good given the casual feel of the downtownish decor. No vertical dishes here or flavored foams, just darn good basic bistro fare that seems to be more and more difficult to find these days. Service is always pleasant with a warm welcome on each and every visit. This is our go-to place when we have visitors who always request a return visit before their departure. Try the fish specials, the mussels, goat cheese pizza with bibb or my favorite the fish cassoulet (call first to reserve one- they always run out.) Our friends rave about the burger. Only complaint is that they don't take reservations of tables fewer than five after 8pm or so. It's always busy, but we find the wait time to be brief most evenings and worth it! Pros: well-prepared, fresh food and reasonable prices, charming space Cons: no street parking, short wait during prime hours more

Great food in a relaxed atmosphere for a reasonable price 6/20/2007

Cafe Joul is my go-to restaurant in my mid-town east side neighborhood. My favorite dishes are The French Onion Soup (the best in Manhattan), the duck (wonderful), and the flourless chocolate cake (out of this world). In fact, all the food is really great. The restaurant is French, but the atmosphere is relaxed. As important, the prices are quite reasonable. I highly recommend this gem. Pros: 2 thumbs up more

What a cute place! 4/20/2007

I went there with friends last week, and I had such a relaxing lunch! The space itself is quiet and cozy - just like a little French bistro! All of the dishes we ordered were superb - the burger was delicious, and the mussels were just right! We had the roasted eggplant soup du jour to start, and it was one of the best soups I have ever eaten! On top of that, we were well-taken care of by our hostess and waitress, despite the fact that she was the only one there at the time. The first time I went, for dinner, the whole staff took care of us in a friendly and down-to-earth manner. It couldn't be a better place to eat! more

Cute French Bistro 4/9/2007

This was a cute, quaint bistro and the food was spectacular. We went this past Friday night and the lemon sole and salmon were fantastic. We didn't originally want to try the burger (yes, burger!) but it was very gourmet and tasty. Service on the other hand, was horrible. The girl who originally took our food and bar order was good, but the guy who was our waiter was awful. He dropped off the food and never checked on us because he was too busy chatting with other tables or eating his own dinner at the bar. The busser stopped by more times than he did and we finally had to ask him for water refills and then coffee after dinner. The waiter FINALLY came by and just asked us if we needed anything else...didn't even offer dessert. He almost ruined what could have been a flawless dinner. Pros: Quaint atmosphere, spectacular food Cons: Service was horrible more

This is the perfect restaurant for anyone wanting an authentic French bistro experience with a wonderfully friendly waitstaff. Each customer is treated with respect and warmth. We are fast becoming regulars and are planning on taking our French friends when in town. Don't forget to order one of the superb desserts. Pros: Wonderful ambience, fresh ingredients, friendly waitstaff, excellent wine list more

Romantic, charming and always delicious 3/17/2007

I discovered this place thanks to my girlfriend, treated her to a birthday surprise here, and now we're married (and come back often). I'm not suggesting the place will make you fall in love with each other, but it's a great romantic date spot. Or come on your own and sit at the bar - the staff is charming and friendly, they're always pouring generous glasses of good wine, and the food is excellent. Recommended: endive salad with manchego, white mushroom salad, top-notch burger with caramelized onions, and a cheese-and-quince plate that is always a favorite. more

My Neighborhood Favorite 3/17/2007

I have been living in the area for about 4 years and I can always count on Cafe Joul for an excellent dining experience, whether it's a quiet dinner for 2 or a with larger group of friends. The food is consistently delicious and the staff is always extremely friendly and accommodating. Also a tasty spot for weekend brunch! Pros: love the goat cheese pizza! more

You will want to come for more! 3/16/2007

Every time I dine at Cafe Joul I can't believe how good the food is. All the ingredients are very fresh, and the combinations of them are so elegant. It doesn't matter whether you are having some oatmeal with baked apples and cranberries, or a beet salad with amazing house dressing, you will want to come back for more. Pros: fresh natural ingredients, great wine list, great service more

Vive Cafe Joul! 3/16/2007

Great service, great food, warm and causal atmopshere. Best burger and bouillabaise in New York City, Kids shared a lobster ravioli dish that had them asking for more all week. Reminds me of wonderful, small restaurants in France that you find everywhere where the food is always relaible and service always good. Not to miss for a special occasion or everyday dining. Pros: Food, Service, Price, Causal ambience more

consistantly great food at good prices, fabulous wine list and cheese course, always a pleasure 3/16/2007

I have been a steady customer since the first night of Cafe Joul's opening. I know that when I walk in I'll get a warm welcome, a table as fast as possible, or a place at the bar. the chef has a fabulous knowledge of the freshest ingredients. The combinations he creates are never scary or bizarre, and comfortably filling. I love the movies that are shown on a big screen on weekend nights, and salute the owners for their creative thinking. I wish that they would restart the book club, because the warm and homey atmosphere makes it so comfy to drink great wines, nibble on some great cheeses, and discuss interesting books. One of my favorite places. Pros: great food, warm ambience and service, always a pleasure more

My Absolute Favorite! 3/16/2007

Perfect menu, perfect ambience, delightful and attentive service and always wonderful food. I go often as a local and love to bring out-of-town friends, who are impressed with my pick. Wine selection is good - - decently priced and generally very interesting and thoughtfully chosen cellar. more
