Best

Altough I read some really bad reviews about this place I can say nothing more than good things...

Worst

Nice Ambience.Sushi selection is good, but price is on the higher side.

Question for all Houstonians to ponder: 7/19/2005

Cafe Japon: Oblivious waitstaff/management OR do they think they are located in New York City? We visited Cafe Japon today for lunch. Asked for our rolls in soy paper instead of seaweed.. Told by our server this was an additional fee of $1.50 per roll...... strange but not a huge deal so we ordered them... However, when the bill came we noticed that the sub par pieces of tuna were $3.00 each. We wanted to clarify with our server and management this was correct, which they did. NOW, I'm aware we are talking mere dollars and cents..this is NOT about the money. This is about feeling nickled and dimed by a place, that is, at most, average.... My question is this? Cafe Japon, do you really feel your sushi is deserving of being the highest priced in the city...OR is your waitstaff and management misinformed? Pros: good rolls Cons: average sushi, over-priced more

Great for Sushi beginners too. 3/20/2005

When I moved down here from Dallas, this was my first sushi place to eat at in Houston. It was top knotch. The food is great. Some of the best tempura I've had yet. The seafood's always been fresh. The people have always been friendly. The ambience was romantic at the dining area as well as the sushi bar, although the dining area is where to be for romance. I took my girlfriend there, which was her second place ever to eat sushi and she just loved it. She thought it was the sushi Mecca or something. And the food is so well priced. Definately a place to take a first date before a movie. Pros: Food Quality, Ambience, Service Cons: Traffic in the area, Sometimes crowded, Nonsushi food limit'd more

Good Food!!! 11/24/2004

Hi enjoyed this place. I tried the rolls and they are pretty good. I will defenitely come back soon. I recomment this place. Pros: food, ambiance more

moredoesntmeanbetter 9/26/2004

More does not necesarily mean better. I have been highly disapointed by this restaurant. The sushi here does not make me shake, it is untasteful and rather plain. When i eat sushi i want to be removed from reality so i can feel the flavors burning inside like kriptonite, royal japan did not do it for me.The prices are obsurbitant for the quality of the food. I must say the environment is not too bad. The wasabi was weak also. I will not be retuning to royal japan and i will scratch it from my list. Pros: good parking, spacious, romantic Cons: , overpriced, average more

Sushi for ALL 8/18/2004

This is one of the few sushi places I have been to that actually has excellent sushi options for vegetarians! Most other places just roll asparagus or cucumber in rice and serve that...but not this place! Their vegetarian rolls are filling and tasty. If you're vegetarian, try the asparagus roll, tofu steak, and other vegetarian sushi pieces (they're pretty big). Service can be slow sometimes though. Pros: Good for Vegetarians, Tasty more

JBihop 5/19/2004

The waitress was friendly and very attentive, but food was slow. When I had a complaint about the freshness of the sushi, my waitress get me the manager to show that she took my complaint seriously. The manager was not helpful and even took my complaint falsely thinking that I was complaining about the service. In a ruthless way, she turned and yelled at the waitress right next to us. It was so unprofessional and I would never go back or recommend the place to other people. Pros: cheap Cons: , unprofessional mngnt more

Good for cheap dates! 2/20/2004

Fish quality has always been among the lowest in town. However, price is also among the lowest. So, no complain! Good for consumers w/ low expections & don't have much to spend. Pros: cheap, comfortable seating, good locations more

Ouch 4/22/2003

Jeez, some of these folks are pretty critical. Seems like these guys are just comparing Japon to their favorite sushi joint and not plain rating it. If the place is packed, service is GONNA be slower (that's a given.) Anybody who expects more, needn't bother critique. I've only been there once but I enjoyed it. Good times, easy. I enjoyed the rolls and the combo soup. Even the sushi guys had good spirits. Good food and good times, I'll definately go back. Pros: Good food, Good times more

Average Sushi, Mediocre Ambiance 2/24/2003

The only good thing I could say about this restaurant is they have great lunch specials. The Udon noodle soup is about $2-3 cheaper at lunch for the same portion of food! However, where do you find $1.00 sushi and $1.95 rolls, and decent sake on Kirby Drive? This location has mediore sushi and the restaurant can get really loud, unless you pick a time, like 2-4pm in the afternoon to dine. On several occasions, I've ordered food and it never arrived. The waittress argued with me that she brought it and I ate it. I am sure this doesn't just happen to me, where they staff gets really busy and forgets to bring you the food & claimed you ate it and charged you for it. So, whatever happened to the ""customer being right"" and the rule of thumb to never argue with the customers in public? more

mediocre 2/19/2003

This restaurant was not what i thought at all. It was loud, therefore not romantic at all, though the decor was pretty. Sushi was long in getting to the table and frankly not spectacular. Miyako across the street is cheaper and better food. more

I'm Not a Sushi Person 1/24/2003

I was not s sushi lover, but I am now. The wait staff was extremely courteous and polite. I think the sushi here is wonderful. (I have become a sushi addict). The atmosphere is a very romantic, low lighting envoronment. The decour is peaceful and interesting. I have been going about once a week for the past month. YUM! When the restaraunt is busy, service is slower (but what restaraunt isn't). The sushi bar is great by yourself to relax and read. Wonderful place! Pros: Atmosphere, Pricing, Courteous more

Like this Better!!!! 12/1/2002

Japanese restaurants around Kirby area have raised by number incredibly. I have tried most of them. However, I only fall in love with Cafe Japon. I can't resist to go back every time I go there. Cafe Japon's Nabeyaki udon is the best!! Their Sesame Chicken mm.. so delicious!! For the sushi, I like Toro, Blufin, and Amaebi. They also, have baked scallop and Baked mussel now, I tried once and I keep ordering everytime I come back. For service, it's fast and friendly! The manager, Jesse is very nice. Just 1 critic, I hope the sushimen are nice and friendly, too. Pros: Romantic, Casual, Good Parking Cons: Small, dirty restroom more

Best sushi for the price in town! 10/20/2002

This place is soo good for sushi.. They are running a sushi special all day all week.. $1 sushi and $1.95 hand rolls.. Their sushi is very fresh and their rolls and hand rolls are very imaginative and tasteful! I go here at least once a week! This is the Westheimer location. Pros: cheap, fresh, good service more

Little Piece of Sushi Heaven 10/16/2002

Sushi is the freshest! Try one of their good combination or make up your own. They had most sushi for $1.00 a pc when I went. Try the Ginger Dressing on your salad, its to die for. Good price for the quality and quantity. No need for dessert, pick up a couple of the Keylime mints they have on the way out the door! This place is excellent!!!! Pros: Good Parking, Fresh Food, Well Priced Cons: Small more

This is not sushi! 9/24/2002

If you want good sushi (fresh, large portions, priced right) go to Ginza. Houstonians need to be aware that Ginza is the best sushi in town. Just read the reviews. Japon can't even throw a rock to it. more

Delicious and Cheap! 8/27/2002

I went here for the first time yesterday and I can't wait to go back again. The sushi was fresh and perfect and the rolls were huge and also perfect. My waitress was nice and took alot of time to help me. The manager stopped by eveyone's table to make sure everything was right. Great place for a date because it's very pretty inside. Pros: big portions, inexpensive, nice staff more

Not the freshest 8/22/2002

I was disappointed with the quality of the fish at this establishment. The pieces of sushi were thin and small- it was cheap but as the saying goes....you get what you pay for. The restaurant was nice but was not impressed with the food. Cons: small pieces, didn't taste fresh more

Always Great! 8/18/2002

My wife and I eat here once or twice a week. The service is always good and the food is always fantastic. The sushi is fresh, the servings are large, and the manager is very customer-oriented. Gets very crowded at dinnertime. Great prices. Pros: Cheap, Fresh more

Nice Sushi but expensive 8/8/2002

Nice Ambience.Sushi selection is good, but price is on the higher side. more
