Food is decent but service makes it unpleasant experience 11/20/2009

I work in the neighborhood and, out of friendship for a colleague who enjoys the food, will dine at Cafe Loup a few times a year. The waiter is smirking and openly contemptuous, and the food, while good, does not compensate for his lack of manners. Eat at the bar if you can. If you get stuck with this waiter I recommend deliberately mispronouncing some of the words and watching the hostility in his face as he corrects you. It might be the only fun you'll have while you're there. Pros: varied items, can find something that suits your mood Cons: surly waiter more

Bad treatment eclipses Good Meal 5/10/2009

II wonder if the incredibly rude waiter we had at Cafe Loup believed himself to be tolerating rubes on the left bank instead of slogging unearned attitude in the west village.\r \r It wasn't the ""I am just having a bad day"" kind of nastiness, but the kind of nasty behaviour that seems to have tacit permission from the top.\r \r Anyway, the food was good. The martini GREAT. The simple dessert we ordered was below average.\r \r Unfortunately the rudeness of the waiter eclipsed an otherwise satisfactory dining experience.\r \r Maybe this waiter was an isolated experience? The coat check was no prize either. \r \r Cafe Loup would do well to read and recite the ""wolf's credo"" proudly displayed in the bathroom.\r \r \r Pros: nice location, interior, clean bathroom great martini Cons: self important service, mediocre dessert more

Always charming and delicious 12/30/2008

Cafe Loup is one of our favorite spots. We have been going here for at least 15 years and it is always charming, consistent and a lovely evening. A real gem. Pros: food, service Cons: always too full for dessert more

fabulous food 11/10/2008

Cafe Loup is the best. seriously, its the best and it is now, and has always been, the best. the food is fabulous, for brunch or dinner. the wine selection is top notch. the decor is perfect, its fancy, but not pretentious. the location is outstanding. the service is second-to-none. particularly if you are not footing the bill, go to Cafe Loup. you won't be sorry. Pros: food, service, ambiance Cons: small restroom more

Great Jazz At No Cover and Great Food 5/10/2008

If you haven't been to Cafe Loup and listened to Junior Mance, you haven't lived. I just found out from the owner that Junior Mance and Hide Tanaka will be there all summer on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. It is very rare to enjoy great food, great jazz, and great service in the same location. You will not be disappointed.\r \r The best part is that there is no cover which is rare with this international Jazz Musician. Pros: Jazz and food Cons: The bathrooms are small, yet clean. What's more important...size or cleaniness. more

great food and great jazz under the same roof! 5/10/2008

Never have i had such a wonderful Sunday evening eating at Loup and hearing Junior Mance play at the same time. We had perfectly cooked soft shell crabs,rib-eye steak with an intense bearnaise sauce and an air dried duck that was""old school"" yummy. Plenty of local vegetables, great service and the owner-chef's constant presence at the door. If he's not there then she is (Ardes) . Sean kept us laughing and it is no wonder that they've been around longer than most. Great, great food with great music-this never happens in NY. Lloyd is one those rare unpretentious owners who really cares about each and every person as long as their money is green.\r \r \r \r \r \r \r \r \r \r \r \r \r \r \r \r \r \r \r \r \r \r \r \r \r \r \r \r \r \r \r \r \r \r Pros: no cover reasonable drink prices and wines-beautiful art collection the real deal Cons: small restrooms more

excellent jazz brunch 4/27/2007

i jumped in during the nor'easter to an unbelievable jazz set and brunch with lovely people and service. the eggs were great, the accompanying grilled vegetables were so excellent i felt the urge to go each weekend since. if you've never been, you must! Pros: feels like france Cons: none! more

Great place 4/25/2007

I went here for brunch two Sundays in a row and the eggs benedict is great! The jazz is pretty great as well. An all around good place. more

just lovely 1/3/2007

I went here for dinner with friends and family, and absolutely loved it. We had a reservation, so we were seated promptly. The waiter, Frank, was so nice and friendly, and I would definitely ask for him next time I go. I had the steak and it was delicious. So tender and flavorful, one of the best steaks I've had in the city. The place was not stuffy or loud, and overall, I had a wonderful evening. Pros: great service, delicious food Cons: just a tad pricey, but worth it more

update - less construction 9/6/2006

we four went on 9-6-06 and the construction on their side of the street (subway ventilation improvements) is gone, yay, after many years. The place was packed, but, as always, we were seated promptly and mussels, vichysoise (an interesting dark color with a wonderful taste), frites and etc were all excellent. Try the napoleon of beteraves, a beet salad with four different kinds of beets stacked on layers of chevre. The fastest response time between a drink order and the drink I have ever seen - it is as if the drink has been waiting for you. Unheralded aspects are the architectural details embedded in the walls and the superb photographs hung there. Pros: ambience, attentive service, interesting food well explained more

A great place! 5/17/2005

We just tried this restaurant and had a great evening there. The food was interesting, perfectly cooked, and beautifully prepared. Generous portions. No tiny servings of overly pretentious food here. The service was perfect and the owner/chef was there to check on how we were enjoying the food. Definitely a great find. Don't be fooled by the construction outside, this is a cosy, romantic place. more

ridiculously overrated 11/10/2004

bavette steak as tough as a boot, unpleasant waiter, disappearing coat check person -- this place certainly does not deserve a high citysearch rating -- never again!!!! more

Unpretentious French Restaurant 7/18/2004

If you have ever felt uncomfortable in a French restaurant because you are afraid of misprouncing the menu then Cafe Loup is for you. It is probably the most unpretencious French restaurant that I have ever been in. The very friendly and helpful staff will more than likely mangle the word more than you do. Food is great as is the subdued atmosphere. The specials are always first rate with the steamed musles with garlic just about heaven. The house salad is worth getting just for the secret house dressing. There's garlic and anchovies there with a special something else. A French restaurant that takes its food and service seriously while doing all it can to give the customer a relaxed and good time. Pros: Great Food, Great Service, Relaxed Atmosphere more

Sacre Blu! 5/7/2004

A great hamburger in a French Restaurant? YES! You won't be disappointed. Great food, service and value. Owner/chef is American so he knows a good burger. Pros: Great Fries, Friendly Service, American owned. more

Not typical 11/8/2003

These days it seems every place you eat, is the same as the next. But Loup stands out - the crowd is older (this isn't a scene - thank goodness), the wait staff is pleasant, and the service was not rushed. Its a great place to go for conversation - the volume is low and the tables are not crammed on top of one another. We both had the tuna carpaccio and raved about its taste. The salads were a little dull but the carpaccio made up for it. Pros: Not rushed, Not crowded, Cozy atmosphere Cons: A little pricey more

Great Valentines Date 2/19/2003

I took my girlfriend here for valentines day... it was a great evening. I was seated promptly, and the service was attentive. Both of us thoroughly enjoyed both appetizers and entrees. The escargot was amazing, the portabella appetizer was great, the steak frites was great and the crabcake was not only great but was very generous in portion. With a bottle of wine, 2 appetizers, and 2 entrees +tax and 20% tip I left around $100... worth every penny for a great dining experience. Pros: great food, good wine list, reasonable prices more

eat here now 2/9/2003

Very enjoyable. Easy to get a table. Always greeted with a smile. The food is always fresh and delicious but I wish the menu would change more often. Good value. Service is usually great but sometimes I get that 1 waiter who forgets he's on duty. more

wonderful 1/22/2003

the maitre d' wore a fisherman's sweater & warmly greeted us. this was just the start of a very memorable dinner. the fries are fresh and the mayonnaise is undoubtedly gourmet if not homemade. the onion soup was superb: quality gruyere cheese & lots of onions, the way onion soup should be (unlike so many soups that have more bread vs. onions). the rack of lamb practically melted w/each bite. and the lemon crepes were marvelous. everything - from the attentive service to the calm, sophisticated, simple atmosphere to the quality food - was first-rate. the prices are very reasonable. i will make sure all my friends come here. Pros: food, service, ambience more

Excellent! 12/31/2002

We went here with a large group. The restaurant is big, yet cozy. The service is fantastic, and the food matches. The she crab soup, the escargot, the entrees, all delicious. And affordable! It's casual french food at it's finest. more

I hate to see all these raves... 12/29/2002

...because I'm afraid that my favorite restaurant will become too crowded for me! Cafe Loup is that rarest of places -- it has great food, reasonable prices, sweet but efficient staff, AND a comfortable, comforting ambience. It's my ""go-to"" place, whenever anyone asks me for a recommendation. Even vegetarians can find good choices here. And the desserts are great. Pros: Relaxed atmosphere, Lovely food, Space between tables more
