Surprisingly Great Restaurant in Tourist Central 2/3/2010

Cabana is a fun, energetic scene mixing bright red and orange decor with salsa, Jamaican and Caribbean music. The upscale white linen restaurant is located on the top floor of the iconic Pier 17 shopping mall at New York's South Street Seaport - the best FREE spot for taking in sweeping views of the Brooklyn Bridge, East River and downtown Manhattan skyline. In warmer months, the glass walls retract to expose diners to the sights, sounds, concerts and crowds flanking the outside tourist area. The most surprising element of this restaurant, located in a dilapidated mall with barely recognizable stores save Victoria's Secret and Express, was the food. You will have dreams about this food. Starting off with a pitcher of sangria and a salad - big enough for two and pretty enough for pictures - a couple may sit and just take in the bursting aromas of the freshly seasoned grilled shrimp atop mango, avocado and mixed greens. Moving on to a sizzling platter - where our grilled steak scent drew envious gasps from nearby tables - we dined on an entree again big enough for two, or three. Accompaniments of rice and beans were (unusually) just the right flavor for this salt-fearing fan of bland. For a fitting end to a grand meal for this hard-to-impress diner, we shared 3 warm ""Cuban brownies"" (read: kinda dry cake) topped with homemade coconut ice-cream accompanied by chocolate sauce, whipped cream and a fresh strawberry. Force yourself to fit this in. What's another lap on the treadmill ... with weights strapped to your hips and back. With 5 locations in Florida, exotic Queens and Midtown, Cabana offers unpretentious service with a view that's sore to be missed by visitors and locals alike. Pros: Great Food, Views, Location, Energy Cons: In an old Mall, Loud Music (at times), Cheesy more

My favorite restaurant!!! 2/6/2009

After reading some of the reviews in this page, I felt I needed to do something, is so unfair that some first timers write such reviews.\r I been going to Cabana Seaport for the past 5 years and every time is a charm. The place, the ambience, the service, and obviously the food. Since you walk in, you feel right at home, everyone treats you so nice and if something goes wrong (lest face it they are humans working there), the staff will go that extra mile to fix the problem or some how make you feel better. \r I just wanted to share some information with everyone reading this reviews. If you looking for a really clean place to eat, where you could trust that you having fresh, good quality items, Cabana Seaport is your place. Just give a quick glance at the kitchen when you walk in and will realize that I?m telling the truth.\r I really hope you stop by Cabana restaurant and give your self the opportunity to enjoy a good meal, good service and definitely a great time. Pros: Great view, Friendly Staff, Good Portions more

Food Made Me Sick!!! 1/6/2009

There's always something about a restaurant that banks purely on it's waterfront views, and doesn't spend a whole lot of effort with it's food and service. I'm sure this place has had better days, and perhaps I came in on a REALLY off night. It was early in the week, say a Tuesday or Wednesday, and the place was pretty empty (just a few tables scattered about) The host was clueless at the front, spent more time on the phone then seating the three parties waiting in the foyer. When we were seated, it was in a booth BY THE KITCHEN door! We asked to be moved to table by the windows, which turned into a 15 minute long ordeal, my friend and I were hungry and just decided to stay where we were. Mojitos & Sangria were nothing special. All the appetizers were fried, I like to call this ""brown food"". No color, nothing exciting, just a bunch of fried options with various brown sauces. I decided to play it safe and just order the Churrasco (skirt steak) for the main course, whereas my friend ordered a seafood paella. My entree was fine (and I hope it would be...its steak...if you messed that up, then they'd TRULY have issues), however, my friends paella was very sparse on the seafood bit. Really, it was like ONE BIG BOWL OF RICE. Disappointing. We left the restaurant not feeling too the tummy. It felt as though the food was just SITTING at the bottom of our stomachs. Needless to say, when we both met up the following week we admitted to getting very sick that evening. Sad, when you pay a rather large bill, only to find it in the toilet a few hours later. I personally won't be going back, food connoisseurs beware....this is not a place for you! Pros: Waterfront view, in a shopping plaza if you need to do a bit of errands Cons: It's just, ambience, service....blah more

Great Place/Best Food and service ever 11/15/2008

This is the place to go. If you are looking for great nuevo latino food and attentative service...\r I find Cabana one of my favore restaurants, have been going to eat for many years and had never let me down.\r Ambience, food and service are the best. You may find the loud music a bit much, but after a few mojitos everything falls in place.\r If you ever encounter a situation, which you may never get... Ask for Alex or Jose, they will go that extra mile to make you feel at home. more

Very bad service 7/30/2008

I am a regular at Cabana in Forest Hills for many years and I ever since I relocate to Wall St. I had been going to the one at Seaport for lunch & dinner with people from my office and we had several corporate dinners there also. Yesterday my girlfriends and I had a surprise b'day dinner there, we bought in our own ice cream cake and was told that they will charge us $2.50 per person (we had 12 people) for using their freezer to store the cake, which was fine with us, but when they took the cake out it was all melted and we couldn't even see the name of the b'day girl on the cake, then we asked them how could this happened and the waitress said she'll get the manager (his name is Aldo), he came over with a bad attitude and asked us what was the problem, so we told him that if we were to pay $2.50/pp, we expect the cake to be kept in the freezer and he said it was kept in the freezer but it melted when the waitress brought it over from the fridge to our table, i told him that doesn't make sense and asked him how far is your kitchen and he ignored my question, then i asked to waive the $30 for storing the cake and he said ""how do i know that your cake wasn't like this when u brought it over"", so i asked to speak to upper management and he insisted he will waive the $30. I was very disappointed and so was all my girlfriends after all the good words that i put into this restaurant to convince some of them to come from NJ. Pros: Food Cons: Service more

Love the food - Waiter was a dingbat! 7/29/2008

I have visited Cabana before, the South Street Seaport location and the one in Forest Hills. No question, the food is excellent! I have not had a problem with the food at any time or any location. But I just went to the Seaport location last Thursday. The service was not good at all! Our waiter was obviously young and probably was overwhelmed by our party of 9. My drink came in a different glass than it was supposed to - he said it was because they didn't have any more clean martini glasses! I asked how sweet were the sweet plantains (maduros) - he didn't know because he doesn't like to eat them. So he took our drink order, another guy took the appetizers, appetizers came and we finished them. No one came back to take our order! We ordered, received and ate our appetizers already! Ok, so he finally took our order. Everyone's food came, except for mine. I had to wait 5 minutes for it. So, he should have said mine would take longer and give us the option to take the remainder of the food. Things were just not handled properly. The manager did take some items off our bill so that helped. I enjoy the food, it is a bit pricey but very good. Also, there are either too many fans or they were on too high... our food was cold just a few minutes after we got it. I mean, it got cold. The fans need to be adjusted. I will go back to try it out again, but if I get another dingbat, it wil be my last. Pros: Excellent Skirt Steak, Cod Cakes, large space Cons: Dingbat waiter, no reservations taken after 4pm, fans on too high more

Great Food and Excellent Sangria!!! 1/23/2008

I was invited to a company lunch, and boy was it a lunch to remember. The food had a familiar flavor with a twist which made it very delicious. We had many pitchers of the white wine sangria and the red wine sangria and I must say that both where very delicious. When we visited there weren't many people in the place so the service was fast. The view is also very nice if you get a table by the window. This was my longest lunch ever because after nearly three hours of drinking sangria you can say that there wasn't one person in the mood to work for the rest of the day. I wanted to revisit this wonderful restaurant with my boyfriend but there was a one hour wait, so I would advise people to expect a wait (or not) depending on what time of the day/night they want to dine. I would recommend this place to someone who likes delicious food and good drinks.\r Pros: Great Food, Excellent Sangria, Nice View Cons: Can get a bit pricey if you don't get a pitcher instead of by the glass. more

If your like authenthic Cuban/PR/ Dominican food, do not go here. 8/28/2007

I was very disappointed by the food at Cabana. The spicy beef empanadas were terrible. The meat was a yellow color. The chicken wings were drench in a b-que sauce that stuck to your hands even after several hand washes. The ropa vieja was tasteless and rice was dry. I know the place tries to blend cuban and jamaican flavors in their entrees, but it doesn't work. more

Amazing food! 4/29/2007

Been to Cabana a few times and I love it! Love the chicharrones de pollo and beef empanadas. Love love love the banana ice cream! Summers are beautiful, you get to sit outside and enjoy the view and water. Pros: Great food, cool decor Cons: Saw a creepy crawlie after dinner, so cleanliness is a ? more

AWESOME Service & Food 10/26/2006

WOW! Can't get enough of this place. Service, Food, Ambience & Drinks are all out of this world. Every time we go I ask for our usual waiter, Yesid he is the BEST, polite, knowledgeable, catering and a wonderful tenor voice. He gives 110% of his services to all his customers, he makes you want to come back again and again. When you go ask for Yesid and tell him Barbara, Yvonne, Annita and Emily say Hello believe you me you won't regret it. Food is GREAT, Salmon in Lobster Sauce one of my favorites, along with arroz con pollo (just like my moms), paella, tostones rellenos, coconut shrimp, need I say more about their food. Mojitos are to die for, they offer a variety of different flavors, my favorite drink would have to be Passion Zombie the BEST, Sangria is also very good fruity and refreshing. Only draw back are the managers, yikes they are not too personable with their customers. But thats ok its still an awesome place to dine. Pros: Food, Ambience, Service more

Paella to die for 9/27/2006
