LOVE 10/9/2008

The best red velvet cupcakes EVER. I'm just disappointed that it's far from my apartment, which means that I probably won't be getting my fix very often. Too bad it's not a very homey place, otherwise it'd be worth the commute to come and hang out for a while instead of grabbing a cupcake on the run. But seriously, I'm not much of sweets eater, and this wowed me. more

Better than Magnolia, though still not fantastic 8/22/2008

Much like at Magnolia, I still found the cupcake here to be too dry, though it was certainly somewhat better. The frosting, however, was much better at Buttercup- it has more flavor and it not as overwhelmingly sugary as it was at Magnolia. It was quiet the night I was there- not much of a line at all, which was good. Still not my top choice for a New York dessert, though, even if it is better than that other cupcake place. more

horrible customer service 11/3/2007

Called to place an order for 4 dozen cupcakes for my staff. I made sure to ask if it was the location at WEST 72nd street. I was grateful it was past the cut off for large orders and they still took mine, telling me it was the location that I asked. When I walked to the west side location, my order was not there because it was at the east side location. I called the east side location mainly to let them know how lacking their employees are. I was told to ask for the manager, Tek , and when I did another employee had me explain the whole situation first. Then suddenly she was available. I wasn't looking for a refund or free cupcakes, but Tek was extremely rude and condescending. Saying that I must have not been clear...how much more clear can be than saying ""Is this the 72nd Street location?"" As a manager in a health club, I understand that mistakes can be made. I also understand that you never turn it around on the customer. Especially when I just spent almost $90 for freakin cupcakes! Pros: great cupcakes Cons: staff doesn't listen; management doesn't listen and is rude more

Best NYC Cupcake 11/2/2007

Great cupcakes, good coffee, great festive decor and the best service I have experienced in NYC. 5 stars to you Buttercup! Pros: Everything! Cons: The line to the door! more

It's a cupcake... 7/17/2007

NOTE: this review is based on one visit where one Red Velvet cupcake was purchased and consumed.\r All, taste is subjective so as with all reviews, take this and any review with a grain of salt. After six months in NY and frequeting Crumbs I felt it was time to few of the competitors. The UWS location of Buttercup is closer to me though I had hoped to make my way to the original east side location. Found the UWS location to be clean and unbusy midweek in the late afternoon (4:30PM) Tons of cupcakes in the case and several dozen of freshly frosted cupcakes were upfront waiting to either be packaged for a special order or to be put in the case.\r The Red Velvet cupcake was disappointing not because it was dry but it just really didn't have the cocoa/chocolate taste I desire. Tasted more like a regular cupcake tinted red. Overall though a perfectly decent cupcake with good frosting to cake ratio and a not cloyingly sweet frosting. Nothing to write home about but will adequately cure a sugar fix. Not sure if it is true that Crumbs uses a mix but based on my tastebuds I can say that Buttercups cupcakes are denser in texture. Cons: Can't really say... more

Hype 6/22/2007

I have gone here a few times. The cupcakes are not that good at all. They are small ,have no taste and hardly any icing. The slices of cake are ""heavy"" and have no taste either. I don't know how that can be good by anyones standards. The Magnolia Bakery is much better. Thats why there is a line there. This bakery was only marketed the right way. The best thing is the banana pudding, which is very expensive. The help is very nice though and the coffee. Pros: Banana Pudding Cons: Not really good as expected more

Best Cupcake in the City 4/26/2007

This is the best cupcake I have had in the city and I have had them all. \r \r I also had Buttercup make two cakes for my children's birthday's and each one was beautiful. The staff is nice, the store is clean and the cake is homemade; not package mix like Crumbs, (yuck!). \r \r I highly recommend this bakery to anyone who has a love for cupcakes and good customer service. \r \r The reviews I read about this place are disappointing. I don't think that people know what homemade-preservative free product is anymore. People are always just looking for a box mix...why not make it at home then and save your money. Pros: Everything Cons: Nothing more

Terrible customer service 1/27/2007

I ordered a half sheet cake today from the West side location and had it delivered for my sister's engagement party. The decoration was horrible. I asked for it to be red and white since it is a red velvet cake, and it came with purple, blue and green. It looks like a $14 cake from Costco. I called to complain, but the refused to do anything for me and told me that I could come in and buy a new cake. My party is tonight and I am embarrassed to serve such a moderate looking cake when I spent $83! After reading the other reviews, now I am nervous it will be dry. The customer service at this shop is TERRIBLE! I will NEVER go back. Pros: Go to the east side location instead Cons: terrible customer service more

Avoid redvelvet 10/30/2006

I ordered a half a sheet of red velvet cake for a party. The cake was so dry, I noticed this upon cutting it. Forget about eating the cake my guests complained about how dry it was but they said the icing was good. Needless, to say I was left with alot of red velvet. I was truly disappointed. more

Much better than Magnolia 6/20/2006

ive only been once, but the cupcake I had here was more moist and fresh than they have at Magnolia. and no line! I would definitely return! more

Overrated 5/25/2006

Selection is not imaginative. Pricey for the size. The chocolate cupcake was very dry. The red velvet was less dry but needed a cream cheese frosting instead of buttercream. Pros: Tasty Frosting Cons: Dry Cake, Pricey more

dry 5/23/2006

I saw this shop in passing and was impressed with the ""look"" of the shop and the desserts. I was unimpressed with the taste of the food though. I had the carrot cake which was not all that flavorful. I took 3 cupcakes to go. The red velvet cupcake was so dry I took one bite and pitched it. The german cupcake was much to sweet and dry as well. I hope that the chocolate/chocolate frosting that I am saving for later is better than the 3 above! more

Doesn't deserve the buzz 5/18/2006

I tried this place twice. The first time my sister picked up an assortment of cupcakes. Most of them were dry and the icing too sweet. The second time, a few weeks later, I was walking by and drawn in by how cute the place is. Tried a red velvet cake this time. Five bucks down the drain. It was also too dry and the icing was fine if you like pure sugar. I literally tossed the rest of the piece. more
