Great architecture 11/13/2005

Probably one of the most exciting architectural structures in Los Angeles in the recent years, the Disney Concert Hall has brought glamour and style to Downtown LA like no other attraction has. In the sun, the structure gleams and looks like it's out of a magazine. The street that it is located on, Grand Ave, also has the MOCA, a contemporary arts museum, and also the Central Library. It is definitely worth it to check out these places all at once if you have the time!! more

Spectacular Venue 11/1/2005

Recently added to the growing center of Downtown Los Angeles, the Walt Disney Concert Hall is a must visit. Its spectacular architecture and design, dreamed up by Frank Gehry, is so eye-catching and interesting. If you only have a short time free, definately at the very least go to visit the outside of the building. It's sleek metalic curves will definately impress the eye. Then if possible walk inside to the lobby. You may be lucky enough to catch some of a free show. The Los Angeles Philarmonic has its home in the Walt Disney Hall between October and May/June, so in order to catch a spectacular orchestra, go then. Within the past few years, they have begun holding leased events. The sound in the Walt Disney Hall is absolutely on par with its outside structure and design. The inners of the hall were designed with the exact intent of carrying the clearest and best possible sound quality available. And they do. You are surrounded and drowned in the music of the Concert Hall. Also, the Hall is centrally located near the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), the Dorothy Chandler Pavillion, as well as the Ahmanson Theatre and the Mark Taper Circle. Also just down Grand Avenue is the Los Angeles Central Public Library. A little bit further is the exciting Grand Central Market and Little Tokyo. A trip to Downtown LA to visit the Walt Disney Hall is a necessity for any traveler or resident of Los Angeles/ more

A beautiful and impoirtant cultural place 9/27/2005

The Dorothy Chandler is part of the Music Center -- the arts mecca of downtown Los ANgeles. Its also the home of the LA Opera and the LA Master Chorale. I have attened many concerts there and it is a very nice facility. There is lots of parking, tho it is $8. Patina runs their catering, so whereas there are several places to eat and the food is superb, it will cost you a small fortune. more

Amazing Aucoustics 9/27/2005

Walt Disney Concert Hall is really an amazing place. Aside from the carpet that looks like crayons went though the dryer, its actually quite pretty inside. It is acustically amazing inside. There really isn't a bad seat in the house -- from a listening point of view. However there are places where there is very little foot room, so if you like your space, inquire at the box office before purchacing. Also, because of the acustices, noises carry, so coughing and crying children can be reather distracting. Parking is expensive, but that is to be expected 9unfortunatly) down town. more

exterior architectural statement...is dramatic, if by the time of it's opening, a little bit more of "another" Gehry. Still, it does please this eye. Views from the interior to the terraces, from the terraces to the city, are interesting and quite handsome. the hallways are shaped by the demands of the building. Thus, you go form cavernous and impractical space to funnels. Signage is very poor. There is a need for a lot of help in finding the correct door to the auditorium, there are a lot of people working the halls and the doors, a kind of Disney Hall full employment act. Very nice workers, by the way. more

Old, but still doing OK 8/12/2005

We saw Sondheim's A Little Night Music here earlier this year. I had been to the Dorothy Chandler years ago, but this was my first time in a while. We had cheap seats up top and, my goodness, they are steep! I felt like if I were not very careful I would fall out of the balcony and take out a couple of the fat cats below. Yikes! If you bring your camera, you'll have to check it downstairs. They have soft drinks and wine at a small stand on the side of the lobby. Otherwise, there is a lively scene outside before the show as people dine in the courtyard at the restaurant. It is not a good place to bring a picnic, so eat beforehand or make reservations. more

great place 8/9/2005

i recently went to the concert hall to see a chinese american ochrestra and choir. The inside of the building is really nice as well as the design from the inside. parking was about 8 dollars. more

the pavilion is a little 70's 7/28/2005

Don't get me wrong, this is a beautiful building, but something about the olive carpets and mirrored walls make it feel very 70's to me. At least the hallways and entrance. Still, the views of downtown from the fourth floor are gorgeous, especially at dusk. The interior of the theater is acoustically phenomenal. I have sat in the last row and not had a problem hearing or seeing. Last, but definitely not least, the LA Opera is a fantastic company. Great performers, great repertoire, not afraid to be daring, can't say enough! more
