An old time feel, complete with red velvet seats (albeit a tad uncomfortable) and a pretty front lobby, where the ticket seller will surely provide you with a crisp two dollar bil...

Independent cinema showing first run films 8/20/2005

The Avon is a local independent cinema on Thayer Street in the middle of the Brown University area. It shows independent, first run movies at a reasonable price and in a comfortable if not luxurious setting. Also shows the usual cult film weekend midnight shows. The runs are short, and sometimes the shows leave before I've had a chance to see them. Highly recommended! more

old-fashioned cinema 8/17/2005

The Avon Cinema has a wonderful, old-fashioned feel to it. The film showings are usually pretty artsy or older flicks, but always good picks. going to the midnight showing at the avon is just one of those things you must do before leaving providence. and make sure you buy a frozen candy bar to gnaw on during the film - it sounds a little strange but tastes great. i recommend the charleston chew. more

Cozy theater offers an excellent viewing atmosphere. 8/15/2005

The Avon Theater on Thayer Street has been home to scores of independent and short-run films for years. I finally got to experience this theater first-hand recently, and I fell in love with it. The theater itself is gorgeous, with comfortable and roomy seating, and an elegant ambience that makes you feel you're in an upscale live viewing. The ticket prices aren't too high, and the concession prices are pretty in line with large chains. My only major complaint is the sometimes-confusing movie schedule, which can change in a day. With only one theater, owners are forced to show different movies in a single day, but sometimes the choices are less-than-prime and the time changes can be confusing (after midnight, etc.). Other than this minor qualm, this theater is really quality. more

local, independent theatre on thayer 8/12/2005

The Avon is another one of the great local theatres in Providence. It's old and it retains this feel with the intros played before the film. It's located conveniently on Thayer near the Brown campus. Unfortunately Thayer is turning mainstream and becoming corporatized, but Avon remains as one of the few places that keeps Thayer hip and independent. The Avon shows independent and foreign films. They sometimes show the most random things like 3-d porn. You won't get any ads at this theatre before the movie shows. Invited speakers sometimes come to the theatre as well. more

historical theater, good movie selection 8/8/2005

Avon usually has a good selection of older movies. It has an old feel to it, as it was around since the first half of the 20th century. There is not that much to choose from at a given time, but they will eventually play something you will want to see, that you cant find in other theaters. Price is the same outrageous price as other theaters. If you have never been, it is certainly worth the visit. more
