great theater 3/17/2006

My favorite of the three Ritz theaters in Center City. Has the widest selection of films (5), a great location, excellent soda, easy to get in and out of the theater and the building, close to a bus stop, and the bathrooms almost always have TP. The seats are wider and there’s more leg room than at the Bourse. And the films, you can’t miss! more

great old-fashioned movie theater 10/26/2005

independent movies are great in the theater too! too bad the giant chains don't want them. this place has foreign films, small independents, and the aura of a movie place from the 70s: the seats are smaller and there are no cup holders, but that's what makes it great. ambience-wise, this is a great date place - classy enough to make her think you're quite cultured, but still movie-theater enough to try out the old yawn and stretch maneuver. more

One of the best 9/28/2005

Like it's sister cinema Ritz at the Bourse, the one drawback here is having to stand outside to wait for tickets. The entrance/exit can get very crowded and awkward as well. Aside from that, this is a wonderful theatre. It is well maintained and comfortable, the movies are first rate (with decent prints) and the snacks are tasty. Matinees are a bit cheaper than evening shows. more

Gourmet Snacks and Art House Films 8/16/2005

The three Ritz theaters in Old City (this is the one I am most familiar with) all feature more art house fare and higher brow Hollywood movies (ie, "Million Dollar Baby" was shown, the latest Vin Diesel flick was not). They offer discounts with a student ID except on weekends or holidays which is a bit of a bummer. Further, since they attempt to attract a more well-heeled crowd, the snacks divurge from your typical popcorn and soda fare. While they do have popcorn and candy (including Swiss chocolate), they also have a coffee stand where you can buy cappucino and various other gourmet treats. Street parking can usually be found around the cinema. more

Discounted movie night and free parking... 8/10/2005

Check out any of the Ritz movie theaters in town (Ritz Five, Ritz East, Ritz at the Bourse) on Wednesdays and receive a discount on the tickets (all shows are $6.00 on Wednesdays). Street parking is free at the meters after 5pm in center city on Wednesdays, provided that you can actually find an open space, or you can park for just $1 at selected lots in the city (which you can find out more on the PPA website)...the one above Ritz East on 2nd and Walnut is the closest parking lot to all the Ritz theaters. more

For the anti-cheese crowd 8/6/2005

Tired of the same cheesy movies with the same cheesy Hollywood endings, playing at the huge multiplexes? Then, head over to the Ritz on 2nd and Walnut, or its sister theater, located on 4th and Chestnut. They play independent and foreign films in a very peaceful environment. The location is perfect for grabbing something to eat either before or after the movie in Old City. more
