Japanese/Korean BBQ fusion 3/31/2006

This is one of the best informal restaurants in Los Angeles. It's a great place to take the family because cooking your own food on the BBQ's is a lot of fun for everyone. The food is incredible. The main meat platters that they recommend are some of the best meat I've ever had. If you're a vegetarian, there are a lot of things you can order including their incredible Bibimba. However, if you are a vegetarian I would not recommend this restaurant to you because most the food served there is meat. more

Play with your Food! 1/16/2006

Gyu-kaku Japanese BBQ is the perfect place to go with family, friends, or a date! Meats, veggies, and more are brought to your table where you cook them yourself over the BBQ pit built right into it! Delicious marinades make the beef really melt in your mouth, and the veggies (especially sweet potato) seem too good to be good for you! My favorite here, however, is the least "traditional" dish you can find on the menu--S'mores you can order and cook for dessert! more

Good Food, Crazy wait 11/27/2005

This place is almost always packed with people. It's a Japanese Barbecue restaurant, where they bring you deliciously marinated meats and veggies to cook on a grill embedded on your table. It's very tasty, and they give some pretty good portions. Service is good too, as they will switch out a new grill for you if it looks like the current grill has been cooking awhile. The wait for this place is too crazy to ignore, however, as you can end up waiting for an hour or more, due to the slow nature of the cooking and the relatively small size of the restaurant. more

come here only if you're prepared to drink 11/4/2005

gyu kaku is a drinking person's joint- the food, while tasty, is not the star here. the beers are what should shine here, and the little hibachi grilled dishes are just to snack on in between glasses. don't get me wrong- the food is tasty, even if the portions are bordering on miniature. and when you come with friends and enjoy slow leisurely eating (because you've eaten an actual meal elsewhere) then this is a good spot. but i'd go to fu rai bo just down the street on sawtelle instead. loud, but fun. more

Gyu-Kaku 8/4/2005

Think of it as Japanese-style Korean barbecue. It is hands-on dining at its best. Every table has a hibachi grill built in where you can personally grill any of a huge variety of flavorful meats, fish, poultry and vegetables. The menu is large and bit overwhelming but you can't go wrong ordering a variety of items. Be sure to make reservations if you are going with four or more people or be prepared to wait. more
