Runny stool 11/30/2008

This hipster chinese restaurant gave me some intense firerrhea and totally ruined my next night. I got Kung Pow Chicken and it was spicy, but coming out, it was like a lava bloodbath exiting my rectum. If you want to lose weight by defecating profusely, I'd recommend this disgusting pit of despair, but if you have any shred of respect for your digestive tract, avoid. Pros: the beer didnt give me the trots Cons: The entire next day... on my toilet. more

Great food but rude and drunk owner. 11/18/2008

Great food, Great service but the owner kills the show especially when she is drunk. She has a great staff and should let them run the business. Save your money and go to chinatown in Manhattan. There still is no good chinese food in Brooklyn. Pros: Excelent dishes with quality ingredients Cons: The owner. Extremely rude especially when drunk. more

Addictively delicious juicy pork buns 8/12/2008

I just discovered the juicy pork buns after reading a review and now M Shanghai Bistro and Den is my first choice in chinese takeout/delivery (though the atmosphere and decor are great for dining in as well). My favorite dishes here are the Juicy Pork Buns (dumplings filled with pork and tasty soup!), Pea Leaves in garlic and the noodle soup (ask for spicy sauce on the side). Delivery is speedy, another plus. Pros: Juicy Pork Buns, Decor, Speedy Delivery Cons: They don't have American broccoli more

you like porkie buns? 8/14/2007

The food is more like eating at a home of a really great Chinese cook than a restaurant. Flavors are fresh and simple. Trust your waiter and enjoy this cool neighborhood spot. Pros: clean lines Cons: not so clean tables more

very tasty delivery service 7/31/2006

So I've never actually been to M proper, but I've had it delivered a few times. Even upon delivery, their juicy pork buns are quite good . . .the best I've found outside of the Chinatown masters. My wife and I also enjoyed the spinach, the Shanghai low mein, and other attractions. The crispy chicken wasn't for us, though. Pros: soup dumplings! Cons: Long delivery time more

IF you can even get through to make a reservation 12/29/2005

Unfortunately, the food is outstanding, but everything else about this restaurant is the pits. They are still living in the dark ages and do not have an answering machine, so if you want to make a reservation you are limited. Then, IF they answer the phone, you're lucky if they don't hang up on you! Walk-ins are risky too. Pros: food Cons: service, owner's attitude more

great place 5/18/2005

Good to find a restaurant where the owners have some imagination and they have actually pulled it off, like in this case. I have eaten there 3-4 times and the food was always good. One of the earlier people commenting on the restaurant did not get the that some experimenting is going on with the menu in a positive way. And comparing it to the Chinatown restaurants is simply not fair. There is not a single place in Chinatown where you have a nice neighborhood feeling like here. Pros: pos experience more

M is for Marvelous! 4/26/2005

One of my favorite restaurants in the neighborhood. This isn't your corner Chinese food takeout. May, the owner always has a smile on her and will warmly greet you. Try the spicy wontons and the salt & pepper shrimps. They're terrific!! more

WOW 8/19/2004

What a restaurant! Delicious chinese food, Sauces made at your table.. and every sunday night they have a Hip Hop Karaoke Night! What fun! more

Wonderfully Special 7/10/2004

This is a special place run by really wonderful people who give anyone who walks in the door a warm welcome and sincere interest. My friends and I have been here numerous times and have always been given the utmost courtesy and consideration. It's a great time whether we're eating the wonderful soup dumplings, moo shu chicken, and shumai upstairs or lounging downstairs with specially mixed drinks and hearing truly fantastic live music/excellent DJs. The 80's night rocks!! We love it here!! :) Pros: The People, Great vibe, Excellent Music/Food more

Perfection 1/21/2004

Great food, great prices & great service! M Shanghai never disappoints. Great for takeout as well! more

Hostess with the most kindness 4/24/2003

Why do you go out to eat? I go out to eat for good food at a good value, good company, and a fine host. May has all of these covered soundly. I have not been to Shanghai, but I've travelled extensively in China, and May's Shanghai/Northern fusion is delightful and creative. Are there 4 waiters swarming around you to wipe the gob of delicious sauce off of your chin? No. But the kindliness of the staff, with May as the warm queen bee makes this a neighborhood place extraoridinaire. Music, often great. Drinks, excellent and reasonable cost. Consistency? Imperfect. But, if you can run a better restaurant, sign right here some call me Lucifer. Pros: Good parking, Decor splendid, Host unequalled more

Awful and $$$$ 2/12/2003

I was so disappointed. Frankly, the chinese food here is something I can make better at home. There was only one waiter for the whole restaurant upstairs. I thought the food isn't cheap at all compared to Chinatown. Chinatown definitely has better quality with cheaper prices. Maybe I'm wrong to compare this place to places in Chinatown because it's decorated better and situated in Brooklyn, but I can't help it!!! I can understand the prices if it served better food, like some Chinese restaurants in midtown/uptown area. I'm sorry, but as far as I know, no one puts sesame oil in a dipping sauce for pork juicy buns. It's eaten with black vinegar and shredded ginger. I have never seen, not even in Shanghai, a place serving dumplings with dipping sauce made with the combination of sesame oil, soy sauce, black vinegar, and chili oil. Yuk!!! Pros: OK Decor Cons: Bad Food, $$$ for its quality more

Neighborhood Knockout 10/11/2002

I went to M to hear some music in the den (basement) one night. I had never been to the place and hadn't even heard about it but went to see some musicians I like. My friends and I decided to eat upstairs first and what a great call that was. I have been back on a near weekly basis since. You will not find better vegetable dumplings anywhere. The decor is warm and inviting, there's almost always good music playing in the dining area, and the service is always pleasant. If the food doesn't keep you coming back, you'll return for May's smile and warm welcome. more

Mmmmm 6/5/2002

I stopped in here for a quick bite by myself the other day and did not leave until closing. The gracious owner May, introduced herself and made me feel at home. I met severall of the fellow diners at the communal table while sampling the delicious and surprisingly cheap Shanghai specialties. After eating I went downstairs to the cozy den with my new friends and grooved to some funky, hip-happy tunes spun by the dj O.C. What a find! Friendly staff, no attitude, cheap eats and a great vibe. Pros: Great Food, Friendly, Inexpensive more
