Quaint, friendly atmosphere and delicious food 9/5/2006

Prompt friendly service. A cottage-like atmosphere. and terrific food. The prices are expensive (we spent about $100 for an appetizer, salad, 2 entrees and 1 dessert) but the food justifies the price. Pros: The food. Nice quiet tables. Fireplace. Cons: on the expensive side. probably gets crowded on busy weekends. more

Good but pricey 8/8/2005

The ambience is charming albeit low-ceilinged. The food is quite good (although the roasted potatoes that came w/ the cornish game hen were underdone) overall, but a bit expensive. Service is attentive, friendly and casual, but not overbearing. Pros: ambience Cons: expensive more

  • The Scene
Rustic and down-home, Deetjen's is so comfortable that you'll want to linger and enjoy the informal ambiance long after your plates have been cleared. The four dining rooms are infused with candlelight and classical music, and the sturdy wooden tables are complemented by an impressive range of antiques, from old stoves and lamps to historical photographs and knickknacks. Staffers couldn't be more accommodating, and it's fun to eavesdrop on their bar-stool conversations with know-it-all locals.

    The Food
The menu features comfort food with an ever-so-slightly upscale twist. Lamb and duck are the big-ticket items here, both prepared simply but expertly to emphasize their natural flavors rather than disguise them in mystery sauce. Another standout is seared tuna crusted with wasabi and topped with an orange reduction sauce. Breakfast is similarly delicious, highlighted by very merry blueberry pancakes and a perfect latte.
