Our group ate at this restaurant because of a recommendation we received from a North Beach local and we were not disappointed! The service was amazing and prices were very reasonable. There are many overpriced Italian restaurants in this neighborhood, but US Restaurant is not one of those. Their homemade pasta and lasagna was the best I ever had! If you don't see something you like on their extensive menu, you can create your own dish (as one person in our group did) and they will happily make it for you. While visiting San Francisco, my wife and I were in the mood for Italian food and were told of an Italian restaurant in North Beach. While walking there, we came across the US Restaurant and decided to check it out. The moment we walked in we knew we wanted to eat there. This was our place. My wife and I are vegetarians and we asked our waiter (owner?) what was available on the menu for us to order. My wife ordered a four cheese pasta and I politely asked our waiter if he could order a dish for me. He asked me if I like ""spicy"" and I acknowledged that I like spicy. He brought me a pasta with mushroom sauce and it turned out to be a great choice. He offered grated cheese to my wife's meal adding, ""I make this five cheese!"" The meal, the bread, the beer, the wine, and the service were excellent. We enjoyed ourselves so much we returned for dinner again the following evening. This time we ordered eggplant. It was the best I've ever eaten. Finely sliced eggplant with just the right amout of sauce and cheese. That was a month ago. I'm returning in a few weeks. This place is good for a quick cheap classic italian meal. The service is fast, but lacks any personality. The pasta list is quite extensive with tons of sauces and noodle choices. Okay, we took my brother into the City to ""show off"" San Francisco, and decided to stop into this place on a whim--hoping for some good, authentic Italian food. The menu looked promising and wasn't too pricey. Boy, were we disappointed. Initially they seated us right in front of the door, but the *cold* breeze blowing in the open door made us very uncomfortable so we asked to be reseated. . . when the waiter finally showed up to our table, that is. They put us upstairs, which was actually kind of cute (in a tacky way). Then we ordered our appetizer and three entrees. Lots of people who were seated after us were served before us. Then it became clear why--the waiter forgot about our appetizer and served the entrees first. When we asked him about it he apologized, and said he would take it off the bill. However, when the bill came, we still got charged for it! In addition, the portions were *tiny.* I ordered the gnocchi in gorgonzola cream sauce for $17.00 and only got a small plate full. It tasted alright, but I really thought it was an awful portion for the price, considering it had no meat in it. Similarly, my husband's and brother's portions were tiny for the price and didn't even taste good. With all of the amazing Italian restaurants in SF, this one doesn't even deserve to be in business. We were walking around North Beach trying to decide between the numerous Italian restaurants. The menu looked promising, and it didn't look too touristy, so we decided to take a chance. It turned out to be a great choice--food was very good; waiter was friendly; dining room was actually quiet enough for good conversation; and prices were reasonable. I had the Risotto Pescatore, which was excellent (a large portion, with lot of fresh seafood, with great flavor). My friends had pasta dishes, which they enjoyed. After a lot of mediocre Italian meals in North Beach, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the food at US Restaurant is plentiful and delicious. The menu is nice and long, with great selections of classic pasta dishes, and the food is simple, but tasty. Service was quick and attentive, and made for a great dining experience. If you go to US cafe you have to order the absolutely orgasmic gnocchi....they just melt in your mouth. The polenta is also excellent...dare i say better than my own full blooded italian grandmother's polenta. Pros: awesome food, small and intimate, friendly service Cons: difficult to park more
