So I went in to Ace Coins today after picking up some silver proof sets at a pawn shop at a ridiculously low price.
Old dude doesn't even really converse with me, instead he grabs the proof set in the US Mint packaging, arbitrarily punches some numbers on his calculator, and offers me $18.95 for it (not even the value of the silver alone, let alone the fact that these are uncirculated proof coins..)
At that point I handed him a Kansas State error quarter, he treats me like garbage and tells me it's not worth anything except maybe on eBay. I have seen this particular coin sell for $300 - so I knew it was worth something.
Anyway, while I was telling him what I knew about the quarter his associate comes out and tells me they don't deal with those. That's fine - if you don't deal in error coins I'm happy to go elsewhere. But I decided to ask him what they pay for silver and he asks me what I have, I tell him I have about 7.5 lbs of .999 silver, made up old coins, bars, industrial silver, pure silver buttons, etc.
He gets really abrasive and tells me he can't tell me what it's worth without seeing them. I know what it's worth, I just wanted to see what these guys would say. I ask him based on weight alone, what they pay for silver..
He goes off something about trying to sell me a t-shirt, trying to make some horrible comparison about two completely different scenarios. He then calls me a dumbass.. At no point did I ask them to make an offer, I was telling him what I had at home and asking what they paid based on spot price for junk .999 fine silver..
At this point the conversation escalated (I don't like being called a dumbass, I can guarantee I have more education than both of these maroons put together, also this guy had the gayest haircut I've ever seen) and I left.
I would NEVER go here again and I would definitely advise the same. There are good coin shops in Utah - where the employees treat you with respect. This is not one of those shops. I think they assumed I had no idea what I was talking about and tried to lowball me for the .91 troy oz I had on me at the time.
DO NOT GO TO ACE COINS!
If I could give zero stars I would. This place deserves to go out of business. =]
