always entertaining!!! most days you've got a sassy broad named Yoda (and 'yes, she's got the force with her at all times, just ask it's name...), who is a tart little backwoodsman to boot! makin' up for any lacking amusement plopped on the barstools, this chick it totally hip! some mornings and nights behind the bar, there's always a shining smile coming from a gal who loves the public just as much as her "ol' man" jeff (who also does a great job working the door on fridays & saturdays), that smile belongs to (of course) shelley!!! and if your lookin' for gittin' put in your place, becky's got a sharp wit and a quick tonge i have yet to see matched!! i've almost had to switch to Depends from laughing so hard. and if you need a little comfort, she'll gladly give a whack to the kneecap to remind you that it could always be a little bit worse... :). if you're feining for a butterfly high, well quite your jonesn' and get your fix four nights a week with the sassy, show-tune singin', blues beltin', bruise wearin', keg throwin', ball breakin', over-the-bar jumpin' jewels (juliana)! biggest, prettiest smile in town with with a twinkle in her big, blue eyes to match! forgrt karaoke, just listen to this chick belt out "when you're good to mamma" from the chicago broadway play! this gem takes no prisoners! it's truely a treat to watch this fantastic team warm up their multi-cutlural crowd! truely a treasured little elusive dive joint. no wonder this place has a massive list regular stool/boothe warmers! No matter what 'cha do or what'cha look like, here....you're home. thank you all at AJ's Deseret Lounge!!!!! Pros: the fun employees, positive energy, inexpensive beer, NO MEMBERSHIP Cons: closing time more

Karaoke Fever 4/23/2004

Cheap Drinks, great karaoke nights (since all the singers stink, and you can be Frank Sinatra) Drinks fly, specially when you have the cutest bartender in Salt Lake. Sarah. You can make drunk friends if you like also. Pros: Sarah, the bartender, The drunk friends, The terrible singers Cons: , The drunk friends more

A great dive! 1/12/2004

There I was, stuck in SLC due to my truck breaking down. I wanted to find a nice dive bar to hang out at on Sunday and lo and behold I discovered this gem. The gov'nr, Sarah, was beautiful and very friendly, and I found some very nice people to play a few games of pool with. Supposedly, karaoke occurs on Saturdays, so I will definitely make it out that way before heading back to rainy Portland. The Deseret Lounge is quiet and laid-back; a great place to visit in order to escape the ultra-posh, super-pretty, metro-sexual infested private clubs that seem to run rampant in this city. Pros: Inexpensive, Pool, Hot bartender Cons: Small drink selection more

Editorial
  • Atmosphere
From the outside, the Deseret Lounge is innocuous enough: short, squat, utilitarian, a Balkan front of white stone and painted concrete wedged in between the paper lanterns and bamboo slats of a Japanese restaurant and the ivy-covered trellis of an Italian one. Stepping inside, no matter what time of day, it's always about 10pm. No windows, just the soft glow of artificial yellow light. There are burgundy Naugahyde booths along one wall, and, tucked into the corners, there are two pool tables and a juke box with a lot of country and classic rock in the back.

    The Layout
The Deseret Lounge is about as long as a city block and narrow as a hospital corridor, so it's possible to take in the whole scene without moving your head very much, which is a good thing, if you've got enemies. There are run-of-the-mill paintings on the walls—mountains, beaches—that have acquired an otherworldly, phantasmagoric feel to them with years of absorbed breath, sweat, and smoke. A good place to go after a long day of toting that barge or lifting that bale.
