Goro's Sushi Yum 8/12/2009

I usually go to Sushi Zushi and pay outrageous prices and in the end isn't really satisfied. I tried Goro's Sushi this pass week and fell in love with it. The Fish is Fresh and the prices are really reasonable. I look forward to going back very soon. Pros: *Excellent Sushi *Avariety *Cheap *Wonderful staff more

Cheap but not good 2/9/2007

I should've known - this place had good ratings and reviews but they're all outdated. Here's a recent one for you. I always go to Sushi Zushi so my boyfriend and I decided to try someplace new. When you walk in, you sit yourself - which I didn't mind. A first glance at the menu may appear impressive because the prices are below average. I had the squid seaweed salad for an appetizer which was very good. After that, I was served miso soup and salad which was unexpected but a delight. However, the soup was very bland. This was the start of the downhill. Our rolls came out along with the nigiri order and hand rolls. The fish is not fresh and there is way too much rice in the rolls which makes you full off of the rice and not the fish. It was nothing what I expected based on the reviews I read. When we were done eating, we waited and waited for our waiter to come by to give us our check (who by the way, never came by to check up on us during our meal). The food made us very sleepy so when we got home, we knocked out and fell asleep. This makes me believe they may put preservatives in their fish! It could have also been the packing of the rice in our rolls. I give it a 2 because if all you care about is the price and not at all about the quality and taste of the fish & food, you should definitely come here. Pros: Price Cons: Quality of food more

Helpful waitstaff 7/22/2006

Visited Goro's because of all the great reviews. MUST go to happy hour 5-7 pm. Nigiri sushi varies from $1.00-1.50. Only drawback is that there is not as much variety on the sushi rolls as other restaurants and we did not find any handrolls. Whole scallop nigiri is much better than the regular scallop nigiri (tasted a bit like onion paste). Waitstaff was prompt and very helpful especially since this was our first time. Pros: Happy hour Cons: limited sushi roll menu more

BEST SUSHI 2/24/2006

Best sushi bar in San Antonio. Always FRESH. Always DELICIOUS. Pros: great chef, great atmosphere, great sushi more

Absolutely Wonderful 12/3/2005

The food was delicious, service was excellent and had a wide selection of menu items and drinks. Friendliness of everyone there makes it worth coming back again and again. more

So you want to try some sushi, eh? 10/13/2005

I have been going to Goro's for about 2 years now, and I absolutely love it. I was a little squemish at first, but in talking to Goro himself, he made me feel at ease and had some recommendations as to what to try as a first timer. The atmosphere is excellent, the staff is friendly and informative. I highly recommend Goro's for the beginner as well as the professional sushi eater. more

sushi chef mike 10/10/2005

The new manager and sushi chef Mike brings a great attitude and delicious new ideas to an already well established sushi bar. Pros: happy hour, daily specials, mike Cons: crowded more

How can this place be name GORO's 9/18/2005

I used to frequent this place, but what happened to Goro??? How can they name this place GORO's when he is no longer there? Pros: Food, Ambience, BUT Cons: Where, is, GORO? more

Avid sushi eater's Paradise 8/24/2005

GS is a great place to meet friends, take family , and just relax. The staff, new or established have always been very nice and attentive. Granted the 5-7 Happy Hour can become quite packed, it's worth it for the affordability and taste. The current Managing Director, Michael Luna, has worked in some of the most popular restaurants. He is versed in authentic style Japanese, as well as the new hip style sushi and maki style creations.. GS serves an array of American and Japanese beers, plum wine(deliciously sweet), and red/white/zin selection. If looking for a place to have group get-to-gethers, which I have inquired about, Mondays and Tuesdays are the perfect days. I highly recommend Goro's Sushi, from beginners to experienced and Vegetarians/Vegans alike, it's a hit ! Pros: affordable, lunch specials, happy hour more

Highly recommended to Average 8/1/2005

I agree with storm730. I've been going here since 2002. It is used to be the highly recommended sushi bar. but, since sushi chiefs changed, it is no longer recommened one. It is sad for lossing one of my favorite sushi bars. Pros: New kind waitress, changed ambience Cons: changed chiefs more

It's Okay 7/3/2005

I've been going here since 2001. It's not as good as it used to be, but it'll do in a pinch. The sushi chefs have changed, and they try there best to accomodate you, but they need work on things that are more than your basic sushi. more

User review by paramasukha 4/30/2005

The food is good, but prices are a bit high. The location is a bit shady. Goro's has more of a seedy pool & bar atmosphere than the typical Japanese restaurant. It has a decent selection of sashimi, sushi, and entrees. Service is average--nothing to rave about. I'd recommend this place if you're getting off work and going with your pals to have a drink & meal while watching a ball game. Pros: Menu variety, Casual, Serves sashimi Cons: Pool hall ambience, Location, Parking more

Not a foo foo joint !!!! 12/16/2004

I have seen some pretty nasty reviews on my beloved Goro's. It's sad people cannot be nice about reviewing a restaurant on here. Goro's is not a 5 star restaurant. If you expect that type of snooty service to meet your over expectations in life go pay thousands of dollars to have someone wipe your mouth at your side. If you want to go to a restaurant where you are able to afford a nice filling dish or a ample amount of sushi come to Goro's. I never leave hungry or dissatisfied. The happy hour is terrific from 5-7 Mon-Sat.. If you are a beginner Goro's does offer vegetarian rolls and regular food. You wont be a beginner for long. for the price of 1 roll somewhereelse you can buy 3 @ Goro's. It's a great place for groups as well. Mike makes a swell presentation on the wooden or plastic boat. I recommend getting there early if you are going for Happy hour. It can be really busy if otherwise. Pros: Affordable, friendly staff, big portions Cons: parking more

Great Place 11/12/2004

Great sushi, as well as some noodle and rice entree's for those who do not like sushi. Great set up, waitstaff was a bit overloaded but the service was still good more

Great sushi - great happy hour! 11/9/2004

Goro's has got to be the best sushi in San Antonio - and the best value when you hit their happy hour, Monday through Saturday, 5-7pm. One piece of nigiri or three pieces of a roll for $1, a few for $1.50. The service is always friendly, although often slow on Friday and Saturday nights. Goro is always there to greet you when you enter and wish you a good evening when you leave. Definitely worth checking out if you love good sushi! Pros: Fresh, Good bargain, Friendly service Cons: , Busy on weekends more

Great Sushi & Friendly Service 8/15/2004

Being the 1st sushi bar I have been to, in town, I can't compare it to the rest here, but Goro's ranks highly in comparison to some of the finer sushi bars in Austin. Everyone was very friendly and prompt. The locals at the bar are also very friendly. All around, a must for sushi lovers. Pros: Great Hole-in-the-Wal more

EXTREMELY GOOD 3/16/2003

There is no other place like Goro's in town. I've been to almost all other sushi bars at least TWICE and the fish is never as consistently fresh and well prepared as it is in Goro's. If you want to pay high prices for mediocre, unfresh food...don't go to Goros. more

Good but not great 12/17/2002

The sushi is good and there are some great rolls like the squid enchillada, but Koi Kawa's food and sushi are better. The atmostphere in Koi Kawa is much more elegant and it is cleaner. Pros: service Cons: atmosphere more

Oh Mah Gawsh! 8/31/2002

AWESOME! I have never tasted better sushi and I have been everywhere! The staff will remember you after your first time there and you are ALWAYS greeted by everyone like you're a member of the family! I go there even when I DONT feel like eating sushi. . there's always something new to try and I've never been disappointed! Even my 6 year old loves it and she's a master with her chopsticks now! Pros: VERY FRIENDLY, TASTES WONDERFUL, GREAT AMBIENCE more
