Clear Creek Gun Range

I just visited the clear lake gun range. I would have to say every one was real nice. Range master and counter clerk were both great people to talke to. I can see why the range operators have to be firm and sometimes rude to people if they have too. Think about it people you are going to fire live rounds in an open area range. Safety is the key foundation of discharging firearms. My wife an I met a friend at the range yesterday and we had a great outing. Put rounds down range and occasionally hit the bulls eyes. \r Every one there were nice and friendly, all the patrons were informative and willing to talk about the ammo types and firearms in general. If I was doing something wrong at a range I should be notified and corrected immediately. All it takes is a misjugement on any ones part to get injured or killed at a firing range. Being able to listen to instruction and respond to those instructions makes an outdoor range a safe and enjoyable shooting environment. Thanks to Clear Lake Gun Range for a great family outing. After showing up right at opening to get a few hours on the range, my dad, brother and I were all treated like a bunch of criminals because Al couldn't read my brothers driver's license number. My brother offered to rewrite it but Al would not let him, instead opting to ask him number by number, ""Are you sure that is a 2?"" Not only was it demeaning, but I have never in my life met anyone who was so hateful for no reason. He got about halfway through the number before we decided to leave, and while we were packing up to walk out the door he had the nerve to yell after us to never come back. It is not fair to the decent people who work there but I will never, ever waste my time there again, and I hope that knowing that such a mean spirited old man who is willing to tell my dad, a customer of over 30 years, to never come back is enough to let you know that it is a ""business"" that does not deserve yours. more

I took ol' Al's concealed handgun class 4 years ago. One guy walked out of the class because he was tired of being yelled at. I was one of the few who wasn't chewed out, and that was because I stayed silent through the whole class. I've never met such an angry, short-fused person in my life. more

Took my 10 year old there and we sighted in a 22 rifle with scope and shot a 243 as well.. We were treated very fair and at no time witnessed any disrespect or harsh behavior by the staff.. Highly reccommend it.. It is not fancy or well kept but for what you pay, its definitly a great value.. I will use it again....They do not charge for kids under 11.... more

I had been there several times and have had no trouble at all, in fact my experiences have been the opposite. ALL OF THE STAFF HAS BEEN VERY FRIENDLY, COURTEOUS, KIND AND HELPFUL. I even took the concealed handgun course and found Al Trug to be an excellent teacher. He is quite knowledgeable and informative. He even went out of his way to offer private instructions to a novice student on his own time free of charge. I would recommend both his classes and his range to anyone. From my experiences it is impossible to believe the poor comments that have been made about Mr. Trug and his staff. Pros: Friendly and helpful Cons: mosquitos are around. more

I had a good visit to this place, after reading all bad reviews, I found the lady at the counter very polite, she explained the rules to me and never made me feel stupid. Each range has its own rules, this one does not allow to bring your targets, which is fine. They charge for scopes and additional targets. Over all I had good experience and have nothing to complain about....now I did not see the famouse Al, maybe I will change my mind ....LOL Pros: Close to my house Cons: can't use your paper targets more

After reading such divergent reviews in City Search, I felt as though I had to go try this place out for myself and I was glad I did.\r \r The staff was very friendly and helpful. When I finished shooting and asked about bringing my son back to shoot with me at some later time, I was reminded that my entry fee was good all day so I returned later in the day to shoot again.\r \r Despite a phone that seemed to be constantly ringing the staff did their best to help me and provide me information on the conceal carry class that I asked about. I thought what the heck, this Al guy can't be too bad if his staff is the polar opposite of what I read in the bad reviews, so I signed up for a Wednesday conceal carry class.\r \r When I had a business conflict come up and had to cancel and push back to the Saturday class my call was handled with courtesy.\r \r The class with Al was great, he provided a lot of insight and layman's language to the laws that we studied. He did a good job keeping the class moving and informative. I HAVE BEEN TO THIS RANGE 5 OR 6 TIMES OVER THE YEARS.\r EVERY TIME I HAVE BEEN WITHOUT EXCEPTION I HAVE SEEN THE MEN AND WOMAN WHO RUN THIS MUD HOLE TREAT THEIR ""CUSTOMERS"" LIKE CRAP.\r \r AND I AINT NO FREAKIN REALATO OR DEVELOPER !!!!!\r \r I AM IN TOTAL AGREEMENT THAT IT IS A GUN RANGE AND STRICT SAFETY RULES HAVE TO BE ENFORCED, I AM ALL FOR THAT.. Yes, there are nacer gun ranges. There are ranges with more shooting stations, and some where you do not need to walk to the target to change them or learn your results. Yes, the owner had a bad time in his life when he was easly upset. However, his first goal is SAFETY. Yes, I have seen him get very upset when someone breaks his SAFETY RULES. You don't like SAFETY RULES? DO you want to get Shot? He is trying his best to do what He thinks is right. Yes, I go to other ranges, but I also keep returning to this range. The range is pretty good, not the best but good. Me and my father go there all the time, and are pretty well known. We have had no problems out at the range and have had 0 run ins with Al or any of his employee's. I must admit I have seen Al get out of hand and do things I think he should not have done, but this is a gun range that has a set of rules people. A gun range is not a safe place, and if the rules aren't followed then someone could get hurt or even death could be an issue and I don't blame him for yelling at people who decide to break the rules. One problem with the place is the fact mostly the way the targets are hung up, the boards are always getting shot to pieces from people who don't know how to shoot. At 100 yards they used to allow you to use clips to hang the target but idiots thought it would be funny to shoot them off, so I would recommend bringing your stapler because some like to hog it. If you just want to go put a hole in some paper, clear creek gun range can get it done. Do your part and the staff will do theirs... Pros: Close, and safe. I have been to this range but will never go again. I would advise anyone who has not gone here to look at all of the reviews on this web page, as well as reviews on the many other web pages referring to this range, and see what is consistent about how people were treated. Use common sense to figure out what is really going on and what to expect should you decide to go here. Ask yourself why you should spend the money and time on something that has so many negatives associated with it when there are so many alternative choices available? I have used this gun range 2 times. Very courterous and helpful. I do not know about the negative comments but there was nothing but good both times I went. Plan on taking my grandson there in 2 days. Pros: Plenty of slots and friendly operators more

It was an all and all good experience. Of course people might say it took forever and was boring, but you have to be there for a certain amount of time so deal with it. Al kept the lesson light and fun. Al explained the legal proceeding so everyone could understand. I don't know about the negative reviews this place has received, but i believe its from some hot-heads not being safe and were thrown out. Excellent place. I was very glad I found this place. My husband died not long ago,and with it, went my sence of security. I was now ""home alone"" and very much afraid living in the country. My girlfriend talked me into signing up to get my CHL license at Al's gun range. I did not think I could do it, but I went anyway fighting back my fears. Not only did I make 100 on my test, and did well on the shooting range, I now have regained confidence and know I can protect myself. My husband would have been so proud of me. Mr. Al was very understanding at my fears and helped me accomplish what I set out to do. I can not thank him enough. I encourage other women to be able to protect themself and feel better about living alone. Pros: they can even teach women Cons: none that I can see more

I just finished my CHL class with instructor Al. That man rocks with knowledge about guns and the law. I had a lot of questions to ask and Al answered all of them in a most friendly manner. I did not feel rushed or feel as if my questions were silly. This was my first tirp to the range and I saw a lot of work in progress to fix the place up, Al also mentioned adding a store to the gun range where he will sell lamps, mirrors frames, with guns on them. Please don't tell my wife about the store.\r I also do not understand the negative things that were said about this man or his range. I will sign up my family soon for his class and tell my friends. I want to start out by saying I took the CHL class this past weekend and had nothing but an enjoyable experience. Initially I thought I was going to be the only female and was nervous about paticipating in the class, once I met Al I felt at ease and his confidence wore on me. He is extremely knowledgeable and very quick to assist and answered all of the questions we had without hesitation or talking ""down"" to any of us. \r \r I read alot of the other reviews and can't relate to any of the negative remarks made. Took a gun class from AL April 4th 2009. He bent over backwards to help every one. His knowledge is incredible and his real approach to having a handgun is practical and reassuring. The things I have read on the Internet are WRONG. I plan go go back and take my daughter and get AL to show her the right way to handle a handgun. They are not snooty and are willing to work with the novice shooters as much as with the experts. Pros: Friendly not stuckup and offers help to all on gun safety. As a beginner my experience was excellent at this location. The CHL instructor, Al, is a great instructor! After completion of this course with Al, I confidently know the use, safety, legal guidelines and have all questions answered. I believe most if not all the negative reviews stem from the economic developement going on around the League City area. The residents and developers would prefer to buy all this land build more homes. As for the range and it's proprietor(s). The Clear Creek Gun range is in poor repair, but that's not why I have been shooting there for 25 plus years. I have no fear of anything happening to me or my family while there, as safety is and always has been 1st! Al is not a talk show host, a preacher or a motivational speaker, he operates a gun range where every customer he has owns and is possesion of a deadly firearm. Yes I would have preferred a more friendly response when I have visited numerous times, but friendly responses are not why I went to the range! If you want a Martini or a Starbucks coffee, go somewhere else. If you need to practice or sight in that deer rifle, feel confident that the range is adequate and safe for your needs! I'm just reading through these reviews considering where I will go to shoot with friends. I really can't make head or tails about the truth of the quality of the gun range but I will check it out.\r \r I happen to be veteran who served during both Gulf Wars and I guess I'm one of those ""yuppies"" living behind the fake aqueducts across the street. I would love to keep a gun range close by and I would hope most of what I'm reading on these reviews is BS.
