Mediocre at best 2/22/2012

I recently visited Hyeholde for Valentine's Day dinner. The menu was limited to select few, very pricey, five course meals. My girlfriend and I both ordered the filet and agreed that it was nothing special. Comparing it to something you could order from Outback would be about right. The other courses, included in the price, were small and mediocre at best. The price certainly did not reflect the quality of the food. The service left us nothing to complain about, but certainly did not deserve any awards. Our waiter was quiet and uncaring, although a friendly woman did check in on us from time to time. The facility itself was very unique and warm, but reminded me of an old barn rather than a castle as some have said. more

Awesome 1/8/2012

Reading the reviews about Hydehole, I noticed they were at least 5 years old. If I listened to them, I would have never gone there. I would recommend this place to anyone. Excellent food, service and atmosphere. We had 15 ppl, in our group. The service was amazing. When you work in this industry, you notice everything. Our waitstaff was spot on with every detail. We had cocktails and appetizers, in a small room located just off of the main building. The room was so cozy. It had a fire going, plenty of seating and room to mingle. We had crabcake and wild boar chops. Order both if you go there. The crabcakes were the best I have ever had. more

Pleasant but Poor Service 11/27/2008

We took our family to here for Thanksgiving Dinner, The food was ok, but could have been much better. Our waitress was very pleasant but most times hard to locate. No one should have to find someone to refill a drink at any restaurant but especially at the price they charge. What ever happened to proper service? They provide better service at Eat and Park. Cons: Service more

The experience at the Hyeholde is a pleasant one. 3/2/2008

This charming ?castle? makes you feel like you just walked into a more romantic era. After reading, some of the other reviews makes me want to say, I usually eat at the restaurant several times a year, and the food is good? but, not great. I always have a great evening out at the Hyeholde, and have always ordered something different each time of the ever-changing menu. The service, while not always impeccable, is always friendly and polite. I feel the staff goes out of their way to make you feel welcomed. Mainly I go for the atmosphere, which I think most will find enchanting and nostalgic. Overall, the experience at the Hyeholde is a pleasant one. I highly recommend the sherry bisque, and make room for dessert because the pastry chef is phenomenal. Pros: sherry bisque, desserts, atmosphere more

romantic setting 11/16/2007

My husband and I recently went to the Hyeholde after celebrating an anniversary dinner after not having been there in years. It is a beautiful place...both rustic and elegant lending itself to a romantic dinner. We sat up high on a balcony area overlooking a room with a fireplace and beamed ceilings. The service was very good . Our dinners were both excellent. If you don't mind your food done med rare you should order the elk. ( which is the only way elk can be eaten without tasting ""gamey."") It WAS NOT gamey! It was deliciously tender. My husband ordered the natural beef and it was perfectly seasoned and equally delicious. The sauces on both plates were seasonal and complemented them perfectly. The salads and soups were also very good and we shared the carrot cake for dessert. Yummy! You should definitely consider the Hyeholde for a special evening out. Pros: romantic setting, great food more

AMAZING VENUE FOR WEDDINGS 10/22/2007

My husband and I recently got married at The Hyeholde, and we could not have asked for a more perfect location or better service. The outdoor ceremony area is beautiful, and there are many places on the grounds for photos. The food was excellent and reasonably priced per person (maybe even less than a typical hotel reception, but much better quality). We've gotten tons of compliments from our guests on the food, the wait staff and the wedding overall. And their event coordinator, Jeff, was one step ahead of us at all times. If we had a question, he had an answer/solution before I finished my sentence. If you're looking for a beautiful and elegant setting for a wedding of 120 or less, The Hyeholde is the best option in Pittsburgh. Pros: Excellent food, service, setting for a wedding more

One of the best things about Pittsburgh 7/8/2007

Put Hyeholde at the very top of your list of places to go to.The food is the best in Pittsburgh hands down.Just sit and soak it in.My wife and I travel alot, and this matches the food in great restaurant towns. The local chicken was the best I have had.My wife had the Halibut with peas and mushrooms. She can't stop talking about it.The care the chef takes in every detail comes across in the food.We sat in the garden. You must request a seat overlooking the chefs picking fresh herbs before you very eyes.Where else can you see that.Kelly was our server. She was outstanding.Warm, friendly, and she also knew every detail of the food down to the garnish. Our nite ended with a tour of the kitchen in full swing. If you want to see art being made, request a tour and see the action. Pros: Food, ambience, service more

What an experience! So much character, so little time! 2/18/2007

Upon arriving, we were greeted by a well-mannered valet, who ran around the car to open the car door for me before I had the opportunity to do so myself. We entered the castle-and it really does look like one! We had a reservation and were seated immediately at our table, which we were told was the hostess' favorite seat in the house (probably because it was the closest to the stairs). After receiving our drinks, we realized that it would have been nicer to have been given a quick tour of the place before being seated, but I am sure that had we had asked, we probably would have been granted that wish. Huge exposed wooden beams, beautiful tapestries, and surprisingly comfortable period chairs, and that is just the ambience! Pros: Valet, beautiful ambience, flavorful food, great service Cons: dreary black uniforms the waitresses have to wear more

A Great Escape 11/6/2006

Upon approaching this cottage-castle, you can already begin to see that a meal at the Hyeholde is a true dining experience. The ambience, coupled with the friendly service, makes dining here less about the cuisine and more about the experience as a whole. Feel free to take your time; enjoy the scenery, the company, the food, and the drink. The setting alone is worth the trip, but it is the food that will bring you back. Pros: Beautiful setting, quality food Cons: Small portions- make sure to order both 1st and 2nd courses!; pricey more

Don't say that ""Your Sysco Guy"" didn't warn you... 11/2/2006

First of all, I have no idea what keeps this place open? It sure isn't Hyeholdes service, food or staff... a triple threat of disappointments in my opinion. Considering the age of the staff and the prices at Hyeholde, you should assume a much higher standard (although they did finally hire a talented Pastry Chef). I guess the thing that bothers me the most about this restaurant is the self-proclaimed Executive Chef Chris OBrien. To make a long story short, a friend of mine took cooking classes there for $240.00 and basically learned nothing more from this short egotistical prep cook than if you watched 30 Minute Meals on the Food network. If you want to experience dining at a much ""higher standard"" with a ""respected"" chef, I would suggest dining at Eleven in the Strip. In closing, if you must try the Hyeholde, just order dessert over the phone... Pros: Romantic Cons: Everything else more

Too liitle for the price 3/21/2006

Too big a deal about tomato bisque. Most anywhere, tomato bisque is Campbell's with a kick. I admit that the Sherry Bisque is nothing to brag about. Their food selections: well prepared and tasty. Not a place to go if you are in a festive or hyper mood. Young people are scared off by quiet- reserved atmosphere anywhere. BUT, high brow meals don't go with Olive Garden setting. Personally I can't take the noisy disorganized restaurants that most people wait in line for. You'll get personal, polite attention at the Hyeholde. Presentation is magazine-like and tasty as well. Portions too small for the high price you pay . I've never been disappointed with the quality of food. Desserts are excellent . What makes me think that the poor critiques are by people who also smear places like Helen's of 7 Springs or the Carlton Downtown. Pros: Meal uniqueness, quiet, Attentive service Cons: Small portion, Too expensive more

Great atmosphere and food 8/19/2005

The Hydholde Rest. is a very romantic place with excellent meals. We enjoyed everything - the salad, appatizers and main course. We left full and satisfied. A bit high on price, but for a special occasion - very worth the experience and cuisine. We highly recommend the restaurant. Pros: romantic, great food, great service Cons: a bit pricey more

This Place is a Joke! 12/10/2003

I really cannot believe that some people actually like this place! Everything, the food, service, the ""so called"" Chef and even the restaurant manager are downright pitiful. Please don't think that the age old saying ""You get what you pay for"" applies here. The food that they call ""Fine Dining"" is just stolen from any famous chef's cookbook and then ""poorly"" recreated and then presented to the customer as something original. I would know because I trained at the Culinary Institute of America (CIA). I urge anyone that works hard for their money not to WASTE it here. P.S. I noticed on their website that you can take cooking lessons from these short-order cooks for something like $225.00, What a JOKE! Pros: Romantic Cons: The "so-called" Chef, Food, Price more

Avoid 10/14/2003

The Hyeholde, as most reviewers have commented, is vastly overpriced - with very average food. The service is prompt and polite, however the ambience of the place is stuffy and very outdated. Save your money and go elsewhere! Pros: nice exterior Cons: expensive, average food more

Don't Waste Your Time or Money! 5/4/2003

This restaurant is extremely overrated! It is poorly managed from the dining room all the way back to the kitchen. Rumor is the famous ""Sherry Bisque"" is made of Campbell's tomato & split pea soup! They consistently cut corners, which isn't fair to a customer paying an average of $55.00 for a dinner that is less than fine dining. Spend your hard-earned money at a restaurant that truly cares about you. Pros: Romantic, Fireplace, Lynda (The server) Cons: Expensive, Bland Food, Parking Lot more

Bring your wallet! 10/2/2002

Best atmosphere around! However way overpriced for what you get. Food was great however, alittle more goes along way. Waitstaff connot be topped, efficient without being intrusive. Never felt rushed or a bother to the staff. Desserts, Desserts, Dessrts! Pros: Atmosphere, waitstaff, food Cons: EXPENSIVE more

where's the beef? 9/22/2002

Since changing owners the Hyeholde has gone downhill. The serving size is meager and the prices too high. They are getting by on the old reputation. The last time we ate there, we went to Montour Hts. afterward and had dinner. more

Pricey though confined 9/20/2002

Have been there for lunch celebrations several times and I still feel confined at times. There is something to the old charm though the dress of the servers are somewhat from the olden times. The menu prices seem pricey though I must admit that the food there is great and would b ehard to find elsewhere. Service is excellent. Cons: Parking, Accessibility more

Great for Vegetarians 8/4/2002

The vegetarian plate was wonderful! Creative and fresh, it utilized many of the fresh vegetables of the season. Pros: Quiet dining areas, Country-like setting Cons: Expensive, Difficult to find more

Not worth the Drive or Money 7/29/2002

The Hyeholde Restaurant is one of the most overrated, overpriced restaraunts in the city. If you are under the age of 60, you probably will not see, anyone else your age. My one word of advice, don't go there. You'll drop over $100 and wonder what you spent it on. Cons: Location, Food, Value more
