Lunch on a nice day 5/13/2008

went in on first nice day for lunch and they had raised the windows in the bar so it was basically sitting out on the sidwalk, very nice. Had Gyros which were very good, but the hummus plate was excellent and despite what someone else said here, it was far from bland, it was home made, not the processes pap from the store, had a light lemon taste and chunks of garlic. YUM! The cook actually came out and introduced himself and shook our hands and the service was entirely everything that you could expect for lunch. I will return for dinner soon. Pros: the doors open in the bar was very nice. Cons: er....maybe burnside is a busy street? didn't really have any complaints. more

Writing this made me want to go there for dinner tonight.... 5/4/2008

I've seen this place a million times since its right on Burnside, and i finally decided to give it a try. I went in with a friend and really have never had Greek food in a restaurant, only prepared for me at dinner by my friends Greek mother who just so happens to be known for her amazing Greek cooking. I didn't think the food at a restaurant could come close to hers, but the food here was absolutely delicious and I would never tell her this, but I actually thought it was better. I had no idea what to even order, but i just told my waiter and he helped me pick some things out, based off me being a vegetarian, and it was by far the best meal I've had in a long time. I'm very picky when it comes to eating in restaurants but the service was excellent, the food was amazing, and everything I tried ( I sampled off my friends plates, too) was wonderful. I'm no expert when it comes to Greek food but i went back and took my friend whose mother had cooked for me before, and she definitely confirmed that it was not only delicious but very authentic. The atmosphere is great, the staff is very friendly and helpful, and they even make good drinks :) I would DEFINITELY recommend giving it a try, even if you've never eaten Greek food before. Pros: friendly staff, very quick service, and delicious food! more

Finally , Authentic Greek food! 4/30/2008

I was finally introduced to Greek food moving to Portland and I now feel like an expert on the food. Ok, in my mind only!!! Needless to say I have searched and tried every Greek Restaurant I could locate; I can now officially say my search is over, Demetri's restaurant is THE reason Greek food is now my favorite cuisine. To start with the calamari would be the most appropriate as this is clearly Demetri?s signature dish. Of all the calamari?s in the world, or at least in the Pacific Northwest, Demetri?s chef understands and appreciates that less is more and that is showcased with the flavor of the calamari. Excellent for a lack of a better word is the only adjective to describe it. I don?t want to under appreciate the starter we had of hummus, pita, and grape leaves as this was implied when I skipped straight to the calamari. Once we moved on to the main course of the ?Greek Platter? which was a variety of Greek infused meats cooked to perfection, we knew then and there that there is no other Greek restaurant for us. I would hate to end this review without acknowledging all the other times we have visited for HH and were delighted by the Chef?s off the cuff specials. My only complaint is I wish there was an entire menu dedicated to the Chefs ?Off the cuff specials? because even Greek lovers need to venture out sometimes! Pros: Food, staff, location Cons: Parking! more

Best Greek food in town 4/18/2008

Honestly, the entire experience was amazing. Between the feeling that you have stepped out of Portland straight info a small Greek village, to the wonderful music, excellent service and spectacular food. You have to try the calamari and the braised lamb. Its also fun to drink some ouzo with actual Greeks. I haven't tried it yet but lunch looks just as good.Very romantic casual fine dinning setting. TRY THIS PLACE. more

Great Greek Food 10/30/2006

I should know. I married into a Greek family. When ever we go out for Greek food this is the place we go to. The service is great and the food is amazing. I have yet to be dissapointed in what I have order. You have to try the calamari. It is wonderful! It is also a great place for large groups. Not only have we had birthdays at Demetri's, but my husband and I had our wedding dinner at this place with 40 people. Pros: Food, Service, Everything more

Disappointment 10/25/2006

They have a very small selection (and practically none if you are vegetarian). Even with that, they were out of the first two things we wanted to order. Service was slow but very courteous. ++ for ambience. But verrry expensive!! I definitely regretted spending $14 on a simple veggie pasta with only artichokes and no meat, which didn't taste that great anyway (my friends spent about $20 each on their not-the-best chicken). I am definitely not going back! Pros: Ambience, service Cons: V expensive, hardly any vegeterian choices, average food more

Eh. 7/13/2006

It was solidly mediocre. My husband enjoyed his gyros and the Greek salad was quite large, but the salad and the hummus were both a bit bland. The service was slow, especially when we were one of two parties in the restaurant at the time. Even after we asked to expedite things to make our appointment, it was still slow. The interior was, however, quite cute and not indicative of the exterior at all. Pros: Cute interior, good gyros Cons: Slow service, mediocre food more

You wouldn't know it from the outside 7/5/2005

From the outside this place looked like a dive on Burnside. I love dives so decided to give it a try. NOT A DIVE at all. This is one of the best Greek food joints I have ever been to. I just moved here about a year ago and have been searching Portland to make my list of favorite places for when I have visitors. This will be one of the first stops we make. The services is so friendly you feel like your at your friends house. I would even be so bold as to say it has a romantic flair without even trying. Hungry for Greek, go now. Pros: food, service, prices more

Wonderful surprise!! 12/31/2004

I first visited Demitri's in 1985 when visiting Portland, and have not been back for about 8 years. Went there by chance on a Tuesday night (as Jimmy Maxx was full), and found a four man jazz band, and excellent traditional Greek food. My three teen age kids had a great time, the food was superb, the fresh Greek bread delicious and the wait staff very friendly. We will be back. Pros: Good value, Excellent good, Friendly more
