Great little gem of a coffee shop 3/18/2012

My family and I visited Hinsch's for the first time recently even though this coffee shop has been around since the 1940's. I think the place was remodeled recently. I love the retro decor from the working model trains to the beadboard green walls to the tin tiles behind the counter. If it weren't for the large televisions playing, I thought I was transported back several decades. We went there thinking we would just have ice cream but had food instead. I was very pleased with my chicken salad sandwich. My family also enjoyed a nice fresh, juicy hamburger and a grilled cheese sandwich. Great food, very reasonable prices (the three of us ate for about $28) and very good service. I'll be returning to try the ice cream and other desserts. more

Got the Cold Stares too... 2/5/2010

Food was average. Service was dismal. Drinks were very good, even the Egg-Cream. Skip the Lime Rickey. Attitude by the vat and bad vibes like they really didn't need the business. How they've been in business for so long is the real mystery. Lived here over 30 years. Been there once and that was more than enough. Leaving the city now and this is one memory I'd rather forget. Pros: Old fashioned drinks from the 50s Cons: Old fashioned bad attitude from the 50s more

Great food 1/2/2008

Hinchs has very good food, and great service as well as great prices. You can come here for breakfast, lunch and dinner and they have good choices, and well enough protions to fill you up. The people are nice, It has a 1950's dinner kinda theme to it. Pros: Burgers, Cherry Bomb more

Nice Old Neighborhood Luncheonette/Candy Store 9/23/2006

Don't be drawn into the Burger King right next door...next time you're shopping on 86th street in Bay Ridge get a much better lunch at this place. And for breakfast, you can't beat the waffles. Try them with fruit and some REAL whipped cream (dispensed from an old machine) and add some ice cream if you can stomach it. Speaking of which, the ice cream is excellent. Try an ice cream soda, a float, banana split, etc. Basically, it's a lot like the Lexington Candy Shop with larger portions, lower prices, and a more quiet atmosphere. Pros: Old fashion ice cream treats made the 'right' way, great location, nice staff Cons: Closes kind of early: 7:30pm even on weekends more

totally bad 7/30/2006

We went there with some family friends thinking historic ice cream parlor would be good for kids. What we got was bad food, horrible service, and totally not kid friendly. Seemed like everyone was giving us the cold stare (because we were a chinese and jewish family in conservative bay ridge?). The food was subpar dinerish - the waitress was incredibly rude and suggested that a 5 yr old girl in our party would have a difficult time finding a husband. And the ice cream, which its so well known for? Mine had icy chunks in it. On top of it, they close really early on the weekend and really wanted us out the door. Pros: It's old Cons: an ice cream parlor that's not kid friendly? fuggedabouit! more
