Gem - HAS CHANGED LOCATION 31st b/n 36th &35th ave 3/18/2009

On a Friday night they have a two person band playing popular brazilian music, bossa nova, a little bit of samba and other pop music. The service was very pleasant, lighting was perfect and the food was really delicious. We asked for traditional brazilian cuisine and were suggested picanha fatiada (which I take medium rare) and bobo de camarao (shrimp cooked in a light sauce. The food was very tasty and the accompanying dishes were filling and generous. From the apetizers, I definitely recommend the coixinha de galinha (chix pottstickers) even though we had pastel de queijo and pastel de carne (cheese and ground beef bread) which were more like empanadas (which I am not a fan, but boyfriend said they were tasty). For dessert we had the Mousse de Maracuja (passion fruit mousse), and it was super delicious and refreshing!!! Loved the ambiance, the music, lighting, great service and delish plates. Def will go again. Pros: DELICIOUS picanha fatiada Cons: not a fan of fried apetizers more

Best Brazilian Restaurant outside of Brazil. 9/17/2007

I've lived in Brazil, I've lived in Europe and have been living in the states for the past few years. Through my job I have been able to try many different restaurants in My Life. Hands down Sabor Tropical is the BEST Brazilian restaurant I have ever been to. The fact that I have a choice between all you can eat (Churrasco) and a full a la carte menu is amazing. The Appetizers are heavenly, especially the coxinha and fries calamari. The Picanha and skirt steak with hearts of palm are my personal favorites. My friends love their weekend Feijoadas. And as someone wrote earlier the BEST CAIPIRINHAS. I was equally pleased to learn that they have opened a Sabor Tropical in Miami Beach. I can't wait til the winter for me to eat my Picanha by the beach. I hope they keep up their great work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Pros: The food is Great on a consistent Basis. Cons: Hard to find Parking more

Big flavor, big portions, without the big price tag 1/28/2007

After reading the reviews on this site, my boyfriend and I decided one Sunday evening to go to Sabor Tropical. We went with another couple, and it seemed like a quiet night so we were seated right away. They brought us some warm rolls that were a little burned on the bottoms, but the food soon made us forget all about that! We started off by sharing some amply sized appetizers. The linguica with grilled onions and yuca was grilled perfectly and came to the table piping hot. The salada cheffe was really fresh: crisp greens served complete with sliced beets, boiled egg and crispy bacon. The chicken croquettes were heavenly: perfectly browned and crispy on the outside, with a thin layer of cream just inside the crust, and moist shredded spiced chicken inside (how did they do that!?). All four of us being steak lovers, two of us ordered skirt steaks, and two ordered sizzling sliced sirloin. The skirt steak is certainly the restaurant's grande dame. Not only was it beautifully presented but tasted just as good as it looked. Plated with fresh vegetables, it was offered it in three preparations: grilled mushrooms, grilled onions, or hearts of palm. I chose the hearts of palm, which were tender, creamy, and a nice complement to the steak. There is no bar, but they do have beer and a small wine list. They were out of the pinot noir we wanted, but our waitress was very helpful and pointed us toward an organic syrah which was so smooth, fruity, and reasonably priced, we drank two bottles. We capped off our meal with espresso and shared an order of flan. All told, the damage came to less than $50 per person. Only one caveat: As mentioned by a previous reviewer, a suggested gratuity of 18% is ALREADY INCLUDED on the check, with a tip line for anything additional you might want to add. The staff was attentive and our food came out pretty fast, so it was definitely worth it. Pros: Great food, clean, pleasant decor, with good neighborhood vibe - great value Cons: decent handful of wines, but a full bar would have been nice. more

Best churrasco in town 12/19/2006

I cant believe that this jewel of a restaurant is hidden all the way in Astoria. We came here on a Saturday night and even though the place was packed we were seated promptly and the service was extremely attentive. Most of the dishes were prepared with care and devotion and the steaks were grilled to perfection. Flank steak, prime rib and lamb sausage were the stars of the evening. I'll definately be back again. \r \r Pros: mouthwatering steaks Cons: might get crowded on the weekends more

Excellent Brazilian in Astoria 11/4/2006

Had dinner here last night and it was great! Steaks were cooked perfectly. The Chicken Croquettes were worth every little calorie and then some. The service left much to be desired, though it was a rather busy Saturday night. Also they ran out of Fillet Mignon? After a few perfectly prepared Capirinhas, no one seemed to care. more

Great Brasilian Food! Amazing Value for your $ 6/26/2006

Well,\r \r What can I say. I've eaten here at least a dozen times in the past few years and I have never been let down. Their skirt steak is great and their Strogonoff de Frango is excellent. The last time I was there I met the owner, Mike, a Brasilian who has lived in NYC for many years. He was a gentleman and really wanted to make sure we were having the most enjoyable meal possible. For what the service sometimes lacks in attention is really made up by the great food. \r \r This is a neighborhood location that should not be overshadowed by it's new glittery neighbors. If you want to have an authentic Brasilian dining experience at a relaxed, comfortable restaurant in Astoria, this is your best option. Pros: Great food, large portions, authentic Brasilian dining experience Cons: No liquor license more

Best Steaks EVER 3/23/2006

This is the only restaurant in New York I've repeatedly eaten in - 6 times, at last count. The skirt steak with onions gets me back me every time! If only they'd get a better wine list - the reds are all so mediocre - this would be the perfect meal. Pros: Affordable, Best Steak Cons: Bad Wine more

Great food, decent service 3/21/2006

I love Sabor Tropical, and I'm Brazilian. I have some problems with their service sometimes, though, because even when the restaurant isn't very full, they're less than completely attentive. Also, buyer beware: when you ask for your check, it comes with an 18% suggested gratuity. And SOMETIMES, when you give your credit card to pay the bill, they'll put that in the total and leave the tip space open! It infuriates me because it's unethical, and when you point it out, they'll only offer to give it back in cash, not RE-SUBMIT the CC payment through the machine. This has, like I said, only happened a handful of times, but I find it abhorrent. However, it's some of the best Brazilian food I've had outside of Rio, so I keep going back. What can I say! Pros: GREAT food Cons: Uneven service more

I LOVE IT! 2/11/2006

the steaks are the most amazing i have ever tasted. You have to wait a bit for your food, but its well worth it! make sure u come hungry, you will appreciate it more.. I have been here 3 times already, all thre friends i bring here raveeeeeeeee about it. Great food, great service, great value, great location! and some evenings they have a live band playing! HIGHLY RECOMMEND! Pros: Delicious!, STEAKS! more

The best Brazilian! 1/24/2006

The food here is fantastic. The cooked dishes are wonderfully seasoned and the steak is out of this world. SOO much better than any of the well known Brazilian restaurants. Try: their caiprinhas, lemonade, Brazilian beer, any of the shrimp dishes like stroganoff or bobo, and definitely the steak picanha -- served on a hot griddle, sizzling thin perferct steaks with garlic. Pros: sooo good!, good selection, $ for queens Cons: none! only 20/30 min , from downtown more

Money Well Spent 12/17/2004

If you are a meat lover this is the place for you. I have been to many Brazilian Churrascarias (Green Field, Plataforma, others), but non like this one. The service is great, the food is fresh and one of the very best. The best part of all it's about 30% cheaper than their competition. They make one of the best ""caipirinas"" (drink) I have ever tasted. Pros: friendly service, Great Food, Nice setting more
