Forno's of Spain 4/18/2010

Last time we were there, the portions were noticeably smaller. Enough to eat but not the huge portions they used to serve where you had to bring a doggy bag home. Still a good deal and the sangria is wonderful. Pros: Great service Clean atmosphere Cons: Often very crowded and too noisy more

Last Stop....All Off. 1/31/2010

OK....Here's the deal. Of all the many great Iron-Bound restaurants in Newark, Fornos goes to the top of the list. I'vebeen going there for over twenty years and have yet to be disappointed. It doesn't matter what you order, it's the best you'll have....ANYWHERE! The managers know what they're doing and they stay on top of every detail. From the garlic shrimp appitizer to the entrees - the steaks, the chops, the Paella, the chicken even!... to the desserts to the Spanish coffee....try...JUST TRY to get something similar, BETTER AT ANY COST, anywhere else. \r \r Pleaase understand, I have been to many great \r restaurants, and they EQUAL Fronos at best, and I'm including The Commanders Palace in New Orleans and The Four Seasons in Manhattan. You go to Fornos, and you have arrived. Pros: Seafood, steak and service Cons: Long waits on weekends more

Truly the best Spanish restaurant in Newark 3/31/2008

A truly authentic Spanish resaurant experience. Every morsel of food is perfectly prepared and made fresh. The seafood is incredible. I highly recommend their famous shrimp in garlic sauce as an appetizer and either the paella valencia or the veal siciliana. The seafood in the paella is cooked perfectly every time, never rubbery. The veal siciliana is the ultimate thin sliced and breaded veal in a mozzarella cream sauce baked with bacon crumbles on top. There are no words to describe how happy this dish will make you. Scoop some of the sauce up with their crispy warm and freshly made potato chips and you're in heaven.Leave your diet at the door! Their red sangria is one of the best I've ever had, The white is a bit sweet for my tastes. Portions are very generous and you can ask for more salad, rice, chips, bread, vegetables at no extra charge. Their desserts are not their strongest point, probably because their patrons are too full for dessert. They offer an array of fruit sorbets which are tasty and their tiramisu is pretty good. The service is always friendly and attentive. Since the food is prepared fresh, it takes a while to be served. Free valet parking is a plus but we usually just park in the lot ourselves. The decor itself is very romantic with dimly lit chandeliers and brass fixtures. However, the place is almost always crowded and very loud which makes it an acceptable place to bring the kids if they can stand to wait. I just love this place for celebrating birthdays. A bunch of the waiters come over to sing to you in their spanish accents. It is just wonderful. Reservation are highly recommended in the evenings from Thursday through Sunday. Pros: Great food and enough of it. Friendly service. Plenty of parking in two lots. Cons: A bit of a wait for main course. Desserts and coffee could be better. Not a cheap but worth every penny. more

The Best Spanish in Newark - and probably the state 4/4/2007

Take it from someone who knows....I grew up in a neighboring town and went to college in Newark. Have been to all the so-called ""best"" places in the Ironbound. We always come back to Forno's - even though we now live 40 minutes away. IT IS THE BEST. I do not find the service to be rushed, it is efficient and that is what I like. The menu is the most diverse and food is the freshest. The Sangria is delicious and deadly! The complimentary salad they serve to start the meal is simple and satisfying. You could get filled up on the salad, bread and sangria alone here! Be sure to try the famous ""garlic shrimp"" appetizer and the veal mozzarella. Paellas are huge and packed with seafood and you won't get a better deal on a surf and turf. The valet parking is a MUST and I have never EVER had problems with it. more

Fast, Furious, loud, rushed and serious parking problems 7/23/2006

Crowded, loud, mass produced Portugese food and way to busy for the service to be attentive or caring. A word of good advice......... Don't use the Restaurant valet parking or let the attendants near your car. Sticky Fingers. There is a sign there for good reason and it expalins everything ! \r \r My reccomendation........go to any of the other great Portgese restaurants further down Ferry street.\r \r Hope this helps and saves you from a horrible experience.\r \r D Pros: Rushed out the door Cons: Valuables more

Skip Manhattan for Spanish 7/28/2004

This restaurant truly athenticates the Spanish food I remember from my year living in Seville, Spain. This local favorite in the Iron Bound District of Newark create tapas and paellas like they are supposed to look and taste...and that's what I'd stick to on the menu, appetizers and paella. From Serrano Ham to Manchego Cheese to the Fried Sweet Peppers, this place rules! Pros: Authentic Spanish, Cuisine, Sangria more
