Best Salon in Portsmouth 10/25/2011

I have lived in the area for 6 years. I tried many salons but In Boston is the best by far. Shelly is a real whiz at cutting my hair the way I want it, not the way she wants to cut it. She makes my perms last over six months and I don't look like a poodle when she is finished. All the stylists are friendly and outgoing. more

Gifted Pros, Fun Place 10/27/2009

In Boston in Portsmouth is In-credible. Stephanie is as warm and welcoming at the Reception desk as she is when calling to remind one of an appointment. I was lucky enough to find Lani Clark--- a truly gifted stylist and upbeat gal. My super curly-haired daughter found Heather and will forever be grateful to me. (It?s always good to have a grateful daughter). I let Lani loose on my aging, thinning hair and she performed a miraculous cool-cut. EVERYBODY commented positively on it for the first time in a long time. The atmosphere here is as special as its professionals. The bright, 180? 2nd floor windowed shop is filled with cleverly recycled building materials doubling as functional salon tool holders. A brick wall is harmonized with a charming open rafter ceiling. The whole effect is funky and comfortable. They?re so efficient that you?d like to wait a few minutes for service just to soak in the entertaining surroundings. And they do what they do ON time EVERY time for the men and women among us whose middle name is ?Busy?. Pros: Not Your Grandma's Salon more

Best Hair Salon 8/8/2009

Salon is friendly and relaxing. Stephanie cheerfully greets clients. Lani Clark does magic with scissors! Coloring is amazing. I have never received more compliments about my cut and color! Highly recommend! Pros: Staff friendly, experienced more

Great spot. Heather is fabulous. 7/27/2009

This is a fabulous salon. My mom, sister, and I all get our cuts/styling with Heather, who is lots of fun to work with and does great cuts - we all have short-ish hair, and she's a pro at reading the wave of the hair to know what will look best. I've been living out of state for a few years now, and I always wait until I'm back in town to have a cut because I know Heather will get it right. Highly recommended! Pros: great studio, worker-owned, great feeling more

LOVE Lauren and In Boston 12/16/2008

I have nothing but glowing things to say about the staff at In Boston and especially Lauren. I have ridiculously curly hair and Lauren consistently cuts and styles it perfectly. (Curly hair is HARD!) Never a triangle head moment! I have been coming Lauren for the last 5 years after moving to Portsmouth from NYC. She has been my first stylist here and as long as I am here - my last! She has also colored my hair and done a fabulous job - always very happy with the color. I'm sorry that the last reviewer didn't have a good experience, however I highly recommend any of the stylists at In Boston (especially Lauren). Great salon, great location, great view.... Pros: Wonderful staff, view of Market Square, good music, clean, good product etc.... Cons: You probably have to park in the garage, if you want an appt after work it might be a slight wait. more

Stylish salon, great products BUT stylist damaged my hair 7/2/2008

I had followed Lauren over from NV because she had got the blond I wanted spot on...however; I had told her the bleach had been left on too long several times and it had caused scalp burning. As any blond knows, sometimes a little pain is the price of beauty. But 45 minute bleaching is not necessary especially when put under the hot lamps! But when stylists try to double-up on clients...this is all too common. Eventually my hair began to break and I went to Lauren and told her I couldn't continue bleaching and I was going to go natural. To help with the root contrast, she put in muddy low-lights after I told her low-lights would look muddy. But no...stylists ALWAYS know best no matter what you tell them about your history. So after I was sadly proven right, I looked like Joan Jet circa 1982 and far from the beige blond I had been. My hair is a natural light dirty blond so bleaching to lighten it was never damaging in the 12 years I had been blonding. But after Lauren got a hold of my hair a few times, all of the hair on top of my head broke down to 2 inches. I have an unintentional mullet....seriously. My hair is down to my shoulders but the entire top broke off to 2 inches short. It didn't help that when the low-lights came out looking like the stringy shag of a poorly treated mangy mutt, Lauren decided to do several shampoos and put in a color stripper that smelled like sulfur. That is when the damaged, slightly broken hair finally gave up the ghost and broke into the horrible mullet I try to camouflage every day. Not easy when I try to enjoy the short summer months outside when the wind decides to blow...ever seen a rooster's comb stick straight up? Besides the horror show that is Lauren's coloring skills, the salon is gorgeous, the people are nice and they carry the best product line-up I've seen in a long time. Just try someone else.........anyone else...... Pros: There are other stylists more

Great Place!! 4/27/2008

I have known Larry for 31 years; he has been the best on the seacoast and his shop is clean, stylish and convenient. In Boston is ""in"" more

charged double what I was told, never returned my phone calls, color didn't 3/26/2007

Go to In Boston 11/13/2005

I've been going here for about 14 years. They are very good at coloring, and cuts. Its a very friendly salon, catering to all, women and men. Book early as they are always full, and it is very difficult to get a last minute appointment. They charge $45 a cut, but it includes a 'tune-up' about 3 weeks later, so all in all its a good deal. Pros: people, talent more
