I agree that the malts, shakes , and skyscrapers are tasty and nostalgic. But, the hamburgers are too thin.

Good Burgers 5/3/2004

I love Winstead's! I grew up on them and that is the reason i love them. The thick onion and the sauce is just great. Also the frosty malt is wonderful! more

I was born in Kansas City. My girlfriends and I used to cruise Winsteads and the Plaza. There is no other hamburger in the world like Winsteads, and definitely no other chocolate shake. Wendy's comes about as close, but not the same. Even after my father's funeral, we went to Winsteads (a sentimental journey). Thank you. Pros: Hamburgers, Shakes, Tradition Cons: Crowded, Not enough space, Needs decor update more

Has been a very good and consistent restaurant for quality food and service. First visit to original Winstead's (on the Plaza) was early 1950's. Good family atmosphere and a Kansas City landmark. more

WINSTEAD'S: UNIQUE AND FUN 12/24/2002

Winstead's had a unique and genuine feeling to it. And had world class hamburgers and cherry limeades. They have excellent and fast service. The waitresses are always nice as possible. And the prices are reasonable. more

Winsteads is ""the"" most reliable great burger in Kansas City. It's really not a burger but a ""steak""burger. This is the place to go to insure a great meal. Another good selection on the Winsteads menu is the fried chicken sandwitch with honey mustard sauce. This sandwitch will send you into satisfaction fits. No exageration! Steve Douglas more

Way too expensinve for a burger that is only 1/8 inch thick... burgers are dry and boring. Fountain isn't even that great. Pros: its not McDonald's Cons: expensive, thin burgers, boring theme more

Perfect amount of burger, onion and special sauce. The winstead burger is great, and with a chocolate shake on the side, even better. Great atmosphere that brings you back in time. more

Over-Rated & Over-Priced 11/1/2002

Wafer-thin patties of super-lean ground beef do not necessarily make for a tasty sandwich. This is perhaps the most over-rated restaurant in America thanks to a certain former KC native turned national restaurant critic. I'd rather have a plain McDonalds kids meal burger than Winsteads in part because its cheaper and better bang for the buck. Winsteads is only fairly tasty. But even though the meat is lean (ground steak??) they add grease on the grill so there is still fat/grease to contend with. To get a burger where you can taste the meat though you need the triple decker. It ain't cheap. Fries are decent, but the Onion Rings are super. Shakes are only fair. Used to be great when made from real ice-cream instead of an ice-cream mix. Limeades are still good. more
