Herc's Roast Beef & Spirits

We use to go to hercs for their delicious roast beef and seafood, we stopped going cause the place was turning into a dump and the quality of food was below average. Since Herc's is now Midtown grill and bar, the place just reopened after a complete remodel. We cannot believe how beautiful the decor is!!! The new owner's kept the same traditional menu that Herc's was known for and added other newer items. We ordered the roast beef and pesto salmon, both were delicious. more

I loved Herc's. We came to Detroit to see the Red Wings play and we stopped here to eat some food before we left. We loved it so much that we came back after the game too! Everyone was sooo nice and helpful. The employees were extremely friendly ;) The food was sooo good, I recommend their fried mushrooms, we had them twice! Comfortable booths too! And yes they will be renovating it soon. It sounds to me like a cool bar scene look. Black and some purple details. more

Despite reading some of the bad reviews, i was a bit nervous trying this place out. I took my wife for Valentine's Day and we were amazed by the good food and friendly customer service. Our steaks were cooked to perfection and we ordered an extra plate of salmon and fried shrimp....melt in your mouth!! They pay attention to their food, which is reflected in the taste!! more

We were told to give this place a try by our close friends. As we walk in we see the owner yelling at a waitress, she ends up being our waitress, the entire time she is sad and you can see that she just finished crying, our entire meal we have to listen to her complain about the owner and how unfair he is. We are here to eat, not be therapists. Also the table next to ours complains to a different waitress about something they didn't like, so the owner comes over and offers them a discount or some free food. (how do you like that, the owner is soooo desperate to keep a customer he gives things away, practically begging them to take it, it is pretty sad to see) Another problem I noticed, is the place is completely full of customers, but they seem understaffed, they only have like 3-4 waiters/waitresses for the entire restaurant. Half our groups food was cold and the others was warm, so I assume they are under staffed in the kitchen as well, and don't have enough people to make all our food at once. Maybe instead of giving things away for free to customers, the owner should fix the fundamental problems and get more staff members to accommodate everyone there. I give this place 1 star for our experience there, but it does have potential to be better. We will revisit in a few weeks and see if it is any better. more

Went here for dinner with my family on Tuesday. It was terrible, the waitress was rude to us. All of the employees that were working were swearing at each other, when we went to get some salad from the salad bar, you could here the cooks and people in the kitchen swearing too, this is supposed to be a family place. I think that the owner should do a drug test before hiring people to handle food. I would not suggest this place to anyone. more

I have to say, out of all the restaurants out there, Herc's can't be beat with their amazing food! Whenever I crave their vegetarian nachos, I have to go in. They are the best I have ever had. Their rolls are so good too, as well as their thick, homemade soups. For dinner, I really enjoy their lean steaks, fresh seafood and their stir fries, which are made perfectly. By the way, they have the best ranch dressing in Livonia, maybe even in Michigan! (I wish that I could make ranch like that.) When I think of Herc's, it brings up great memories of great food. I love this place and the amazing food you get there. more

Love the new owner's!! Heard renovations are in the works, the place really needs it! I noticed some new furniture and the cooks are nicely uniformed! Best food with reasonable prices, casual atmosphere and friendly waitstaff!! more

Heard this place is under new management and the new owner's are going to renovate the place. The food was served quickly, the portions sizes were large and cooked to perfection.. I got full, and still had a lot to take home with me. Loved the waitstaff, the pricing was reasonable, and the atmoshphere inviting and friendly. Will be returning for more good food! more

I took my family here for a family night out. I had never heard of the place, but wow where do I begin! We are still talking about our meals! We ate until we were stuffed! The service was fantastic, the prices reasonable and did I mention the food!? The only negative you will experience is trying to choose only one thing from the vast menu! more

its terrible that i belive the employees wrote good reviews to offset the bad ones i had been going to hercs since the 70s and i was there the last 3 times were the worst resturaunt i wouldnt reccomend this place to anyone the food is horrible its gonna go under also i asked waitstaff is this roast beef fresh well with no customers how could it have been 4 hours after i ate i was on toilet more

The waitstaff is horrible the bartender Is the most nonprofessional disgusting rude person I've ever seen. She literally sat there and ate the whole time I was there she did not pay attention to her customers and the waitresses were telling her half the time when a customer wanted something. I witnessed her yelling at a waitress because she called her name when she needed a drink (the waitress was sitting there for several minutes waiting before she did this) This was all just waiting on my drink. When my waitress FINALLY came with our drinks she didnt even ask us what she wanted to eat she said I'll be right back and walked away. We waited another ten minutes just for her to come and get our food orders. She was very rude. Did not offer us coleslaw rice or baked french onion soup. When I finally got my food It was cold undercooked and just plain disgusting. I would not recommend going there for a few months when It is under completely new managment. The staff now is horrible and rude. The cooks are dirty and use vulgar language and nothing about this restruant is a good place to go more

First off, the staff was great. Super friendly when we walked in, and throughout our meal. Our waitress was incredibly friendly, and I wish I had her name so I could compliment her. more

We have been coming to Hercs for a few years now because we love the food. It is high quality and tasty. What keeps us coming back is the food, of course, and the family-owned atmosphere. If we want a little change up in a dish, the owners are happy to accommodate us. They are there to please us---this is what restaurants used to be before chains came around. We make a stop here around once a week. We love so many of their specialties, such as the salmon florentine, and I just crave their rolls. Their French onion soup is super too! Were were there in Oct 2009. Have been hearing about Hercs for a few years. Finally made the ride from the eastside. The roast beef was top notch. The service was medicore. We waited at the door for someone to greet us. The soup was luke warm. Pros: Roast beef Cons: Service, atmosphere more

The Food was good. All of the cooks are punks and walk around with sideways hats on and piercing in their ears, and are filthy. often walk up behind the bar take a drink touch their mouth and face, smoke and then go right back to prepping food without washing their hands. i have had a very bad experience with a man there named David. Seems two-faced and only talks to his regular customers. the waitstaff was fine except they smoke right in front of their customers, cool bartenders. but really couldn't stand sitting at the bar due to the crazy customers who live in the motel next door. To me the bar seems like a place where alcoholic UAW workers can go and feel sorry for themselfs. All in all, I am very upset with Herc's and will not be returning again. the place is filthy and needs to be inspected by a state health inspector and I'm pretty sure he would be offended byt this disgusting hole in the wall referred to as a Livonia classic Pros: Hot Bartenders....nice waitstaff Cons: Looks terrible inside, terrible management more

Great place to eat. We have been going to Herc's for over 20 years. I've never ordered something and not liked it. They really need to invest a bit of money into a remodeling job, but the food is fantastic as well as the staff. more
