Hands down one of the best salons in Chicago. I visited Sonia at the Lincoln Park location to update my usual boring look. I've had difficulty finding a salon in Chicago that understood the type of look I was going for. Sonia was professional and easy to connect with, she listened to what I needed and wanted out of my look and made it happen. I highly recommend Sine Qua Non and Sonia! more

Sine Qua Non creates an exceptional experience from beginning to end. The online scheduling system makes it very easy to set up your appointment and the staff is always professional and friendly. I've had my hair done twice by Josie in the West Town salon and have left with a great cut and color every time. For someone who has been traumatized by past bad hair experiences at other salons, Sine Qua Non made me comfortable from the beginning and I no longer dread having to make a hair appointment. Each salon's beautiful interior design and Bumble & Bumble products is the icing on the cake and I recommend SQN to anyone and everyone I know. more

Editorial review from Citysearch 3/8/2013

I love this salon! I visited Kimberly at the Lincoln Park location to take my hair from a platinum blonde to a more antique blonde. I've had difficulty finding a salon in the past and the work she did, the atmosphere at the salon and the level of professionalism was perfect. Kimberly listened to what I wanted and gave me exactly that, but better than what I could have imagined. The other stylists were quite friendly and I loved all the local artwork, which I learned Kimberly had actually done! I highly recommend Sine Qua Non and Kimberly! more

Curly hair specialists 3/8/2011

I have really curly hair and found this place after reading a lot of reviews. I was really pleased with the results and the tips that I got there -- and I like that they practice themselves what they preach! more

Stacia= THE BOMB 11/2/2010

If you go on a free haircut Monday, ask for Stacia. She cut my hair today and absolutely NAILED IT! she gave me exactly what I asked for only better, I have bangs with long layered hair and she somehow made it mod, wearable, ethereal and cute all at the same time. she also somehow made my stick straight hair wavy with no curling iron... the woman has magic hands. She spent so much time and care on it, I felt like I was in such good hands. I seriously can't stop raving about this girl, she's awesome. Her supervisor, Stevie, kept coming around to check up, and she was also awesome-- so knowledgeable, helpful, and obviously passionate about hairstyling. and to top it all off it was FREE! seriously you must go here. It is gorgeous, friendly, professional, and affordable. LOVED IT!! more

Great attention to detail 9/15/2009

Carrie does such a meticulous job with my high maintenance haircut! Pros: Great location and talented staff more

Wish I still lived nearby! 5/28/2009

I got the best haircut ever here. I wish I still lived in Chicago. I only went once and then moved. The cut and highlights came out to around $135 but well worth it. The cut made my usually hard to style hair easy and manageable. I loved the type of cut and have tried to explain it to other hairstylists since moving, but nobody ever comes close. I also purchased their styling products. more

Bad Service, Bad Attitude 3/27/2009

I went to Sine Qua Non after my sister in law had recommended it. I wanted a long bob. Things started off well, until my stylist started washing my hair. There was no hot water. She made an excuse about the hot water tank being empty at the end of the day. Not a big deal, but things got worse. Yola started cutting my hair and I noticed how she started cutting my hair very short, much shorter than what I had asked for. While cutting the back of my hair, she opened up my smock to cut near my neck, which left a ton of hair down my back and on my shirt. When she was done cutting, she said her next appointment was here and that the assistant would finish. This is my BIGGEST pet peeve, I HATE when the stylist starts with another customer, leaving her first customer to sort the rest of the hair cut out with an assistant. The assistant started drying my hair, and was very rough with the brush and she kept grabbing my hair - very unpleasant. Her friend showed up and she yelled to her from across the salon ""I'll be right there, I just have to finish drying this lady's hair."" When she was done, she commented back to the stylist that ""I was all hers"" and abruptly left with her friend. The stylist left her customer and came back to me. At this point, I looked in the mirror and was not happy with what I saw. My hair was very flat, there was no texture, and it was much shorter than what I wanted. I commented that I wanted more texture, and she said sarcastically, and not in a funny way, ""Oh you don't want a classic bob?"" I said no thanks. She added more texture, and my hair looked ok. I wasn't happy with my bangs, so she cut them some more. The cut was ok. I would not go back to this salon. I don't care if Yola had a bad day. You should not leave your appointment with hair down your back, with a shorter cut than what you asked for (much much shorter), and most importantly totally annoyed. Pros: Nice atmosphere, polite receptionist Cons: Careless staff, rude stylists, bad appointment management more

Jennifer Rocks! 2/13/2009

Where do I start? I am SOOO pleased with my FIRST Sine Qua Non experience. I recently moved here from Michigan where the same girl had been doing my hair for 20 years so I was VERY nervous about having to find someone I trusted. I was in desperate need of a haircut and color from one that had definitely run it's course, it had been roughly 5 months!!! I read a few reviews, narrowed it down to 5 places, picked up the phone and decided I would go to the first place that could at least get me in for a consultation-today. I gave the receptionist a brief history, explained my apprehension and made one request: a senior or master stylist, and she set up a consultation with Jennifer. I hung up and instantly felt queasy, I was stepping out of my ""comfort zone"" ... I showed up about 10 minutes early and was almost immediately introduced to Jennifer. She sat me down, LISTENED to me and offered ideas, and the best part about it was that I was comfortable with her AND she happened to be free for the next 1 1/2 hours! She did an OUTSTANDING job, the color is fabulous, and the cut was exactly what my hair needed, and it just so happens that she does eyebrows too! I can't believe I lucked out on the first try. I think I may have found the girl who will be doing my hair for the next 20 years. Parking was easy, salon was fun & upbeat, staff was friendly, great selection of product, and they give you a ""welcome"" gift bag with coupons and free samples to boot!!! Thanks again Jennifer! :) more

Best place for a great cut! 1/27/2009

I went to Jamie at their Lakeview location after getting the WORST hair cut I have EVER had at a totally different salon that I will leave nameless. Well, first off Jamie was very kind, and totally knew what she was doing, she had a great plan on how to fix my hair from its mullet into something more appealing and manageable. Also I gave her free control on how my color should be and the type of cut and I walked out with a stylish, color , highlights, toner and cut that I love! The pros: she was not over booked, major to me, was very interested in my concerns, was well educated and knew exactly how to take my idea and turn it into a masterpiece. She was she was happy, energetic, patient and focused. Cons: none. Usually when I get my hair done it takes a while and I get quite a bit done, and at most places the stylist will complain about how long it will take them to do my hair or get bitchy and rude to me, and Jamie did none of that. She was attentive, through, liked what she was doing, and took great pride in her work. Which is how it should be because lets face it ladies, if I could do it myself I would go buy a box of Revlon, but we go to the pros for their experience and expect the best. You wouldn't preform heart surgery on yourself now would you, you would go to a cardiologist! So with that said I truly recomend Jamie for her experience, hard work, and over all patience and great work! Pros: love it all more

Curls 1/4/2009

My curly hair has always been something I've been scared to cut, due to the fact most stylists do not know how to manage it. I did research on salons in Chicago that specialized with curly hair and kept coming across this one. I called to schedule my appointment two days before New Years Eve and got in NYE afternoon. The person who answered the phone was very polite and asked questions about my hair. I was set up with Kimberly and absolutely love my haircut! I pretty much left it up to her with what she wanted to do and trusted her. I was right in doing so. She cut off over a foot of hair and added bangs which in 28 years is something I've never had. I was very impressed with this salon. Everyone was friendly and the stylists know what they are doing! more

Stylist chases client away 12/30/2008

Bad experience at the salon. During my haircut with Stevie, while making small talk she asked how I found out about the salon. I mentioned that I found it through CitySearch. Since the salon was so highly rated I decided to try it out. She then proceed to ask where I lived and I told her, which is about 25 min from the salon. Her response was ?You drove all the way over here for a haircut? There isn't someone local you could go to?? \r Why would you say that to the client in your chair? Pretty smart business technique; chase a client out of your chair and the owner's salon into someone else's. Cons: Rude more

Good haircut, bad customer service at the front 12/18/2008

I love Tracey, she is an awesome stylist. I just moved to Chicago and have lived in NYC for a while. I am glad I found a salon where I can get a good haircut for a very good price. The only complaint I have is the customer service when you call in. They are extremely rude. So be prepared for rude people on the phone, but great service when you go there. \r Pros: Great stylists Cons: Lots of traffic when you come to the area, Rude people when you call to make appointments more

Very talented! 9/18/2008

I just moved into the area and I had previously worked in salons elsewhere so I am very picky about my hair. After hearing pleasant comments reguarding the salon I decided to take the chance. I cannot express how pleased I am with the cut I received from Jenna at the Lincoln Park location. She was very professional and friendly right off the bat, and after having several short cuts in the past, this by far is the most flattering and so easy to style! I highly recommend Jenna more

Best Stylist/Salon 9/11/2008

After 3+ years of searching for a highly skilled and friendly stylist, I found Jenna. I am a new Mom whose hair had been neglected and butchered in the past year and Jenna gave me a style that was both manageable for my new lifestyle as well as sassy and fun to fit my personality. I felt like a little of my confidence was restored. I walked out of the salon last Saturday feeling wonderful. I have gotten so many compliments in the last week! The entire staff was professional and kind. The decor of the salon was beautiful and clean. I would highly recommend this salon and if you have short/medium hair, book with Jenna. more

Best haircut experience I've had in a loooong time 8/19/2008

I had a great experience at Sine Qua Non. From the moment I called, the staff was really helpful and pleasant. When I arrived, I only waited a few minutes and was offered water/coffee/tea. I worked with Jenna and she was great. I told her about my past haircut disasters and that I was not entirely sure of the cut I wanted, but that I was really just looking for a re-shaping and some long bangs. She listened to the few requirements I had and then made some simple suggestions. I felt comfortable that she knew what I wanted and that this experience would not be like my last. During the style and blowdry, Jenna gave me tips on what drying technique I should use to get my bangs to fall the right way. My hair ended up exactly as I had hoped it would! Also, this salon offers fun little perks for referring new clients and for being a first-time client. I highly recommend it. more

happy hair! 8/15/2008

I just scored the best haircut of my life. \r My stylist (Stevie) was so amazing and paid attention to every hair on my head. I have long hair and I wanted it to look fabulous without looking short (yuck). I didn't think it was possible, but she pulled it off! \r She is super personable and even likes the same books as me!\r Besides Stevie being awesome, the shampoo girl gave a great massage and the front desk peeps were really accomadating. \r I usually have a hard time spending too much money on my hairs, but after leaving I felt it was completely justified. It's been a couple weeks and I am actually able to style it myself and make it look as grand as she did. \r I love Sine Qua Non!\r I love Stevie!\r \r p.s. get the tea! Pros: general atmosphere Cons: line for the bathroom more

Disappointed 6/13/2008

I was hoping to get a great cut here but it was the 2nd worst haircut in my life. My bangs are much too short, much shorter than what I asked for. My hair is cut in a way that it sticks out and I have to spend so much extra time on it to try to make it look decent. A good cut should make you spend LESS time. I should have known better - I read all the reviews here and if you go back one poster shows how some of the reviewers are salon employees, including the owner! She posted a positive review on yelp too, though at least she admits she is the owner there. I have to wonder how many of these positive reviews are under false pretenses. My overall experience at the salon was fine besides the cut, but it's no use going back to try to have someone fix it because I don't want more layers cut into my hair. I had a precision cut elsewhere in the city, it cost more but I now realize it was worth it. I wrote a great review for that salon, was hoping to do the same for this one but hopefully if you go you'll get a better cut than what I did. Pros: Ample street parking, comfortable atmosphere Cons: Bad cut, stylist didn't listen, too pricy for service given more

Best Haircut of my life! Sam is awsome! 5/17/2008

I had been going to the same sylist in Michigan City, Indiana for 16 years. Long hair, permed hair, colored hair, short hair, mid-length hair, all of it. I was sooo apprehensive about change, even though I was only happy with my hair one out of every 5 times! I won't name the salon, their good folks. My daughter made me a gift of an appointment at her salon, with her stylist, at the Lincoln at Diversy location, for Mother's Day.\r My daughter has a lovely thick mane of beautiful hair, and I do not. I had nearly given up looking trendy at my age, especially since I spend a lot of time in the summer on a motorcycle with my husband. Sam listened to my complaints about my hair, and immediately knew what colors I would like, what cut would benefit me the most, and I left the salon feeling like a grateful movie star. It is so worth the expense...and the hour and fifteen minute drive...I'm going to keep coming back to Sine Qua Non, and to Sam!!! Pros: Atmosphere, friendliness, professionalism more

You will love Anne! 4/14/2008

I get my eyebrows waxed by Anne, and am absolutely thrilled with her work. The staff at Sine Qua Non is welcoming, and the treatment rooms are very comfortable. Anne is extremely kind and knowledgeable, and always does an amazing job. I get compliment after compliment on my brows. Check out Sine Qua Non, and have a service with Anne - you will not be disappointed!!! Pros: great tea, great staff, great services more
