I had a very bad experience here this weekend.\r \r I have been to Domo 77 a lot. It is near my house and has pretty good Japanese food. I have always had a pretty good experience but have always thought their customer service could use some help. After my experience this weekend, I feel that they need a new owner...\r \r My parents had a Groupon and my fiance and I had a Groupon. We got sat with another couple that had a Groupon. We ordered our drinks from the waitress and then the owner of all the Japan 77 restaurants came to take our food orders. After we that each couple had a Groupon, he told us that he does not accept more than one Groupon per party and that we could either ""eat his good food or go home and eat."" He continued to yell this at us every time we opened our mouths to speak. I do not think he understood that my fiance and I are completely separate when it comes to payment. My fiance went to go talk to him to try to explain the situation and he got very mad and walked away while my fiance was in mid-sentence. My mom went to see what was going on and he came back to my fiance to continue to yell at him. I went out there to see whether we could stay or not and I tried to talk to the man but he told me that he did not care what I had to say and waved his hand at me to leave. I felt extremely disrespected.\r \r I can't believe that people are able to run businesses this way. You should never tell your customer to either eat your good food or go home. I also cannot believe that he batted his hand at me and told me that he did not care for what I had to say. If you, as a business owner, are losing out on Groupon so badly then you should not be participating in it. Also, the Groupon deal said only one Groupon per table which would not apply to this style of eating, as multiple parties sit at the same table. A good business owner would have explained that he does not generally allow Groupons to be arranged this way but would let it pass this time since the customer was not aware, NOT tell their customers to go home and eat!\r \r Domo 77 treats their customers terribly! As you can see from previous reviews, their customer service is bad even from the owner. DO NOT EAT HERE. If you want a better experience and better food, go to Benihana off of Butterfield Rd. more

Worse than Awful!! I went last night around 7. We called ahead and they tried to make a reservation and they said no need there is no wait, and hung up. We get there and have to wait. When we finally got to our table, we sat for another 15 minutes before our very unfriendly waitress came to take our drink order, as you can imagine it then took a long time for our drinks to get there. After the chef came, he checked our order, it was right. I ordered the steak and chicken, but no mushrooms with the steak. Other people at the table ordered chicken as well, and I got 5 pieces. Yes, I'm spending $30 on a meal and got 5 pieces of bland chicken. The random people sitting at our table even said I should say something because that was ridiculous. So I did...to the waitress. She then responded ""Complain to him"" as she pointed at the chef. I couldn't believe it. SO they did end up making me more chicken...that they then split amongst 4 of us again so woooo another 3 pieces! The steak was good but, he mixed the entire thing with mushrooms, so yayy I sat there and picked them all out. I hope my chef noticed because thats seriously unacceptable. Sorry that I have an allergy! Last, but not least the mustard sauce tasted like nail polish. I wouldn't even recommend this place to my worst enemy! I will never go back!!!! Worst dining experience I have ever had. I wish I walked to the McDonalds next store and spent $5 dollars instead of $30. So not worth it!! Save your money!!! more

Great food, but 3/11/2012

Food is great. You get a lot of food for the money. Service was kind of slow. We went at 1:30pm on Sunday they only had 2 chefs for the entire restaurant.Once the chef arrived at our hibachi he was great. The wait staff was better once the chef arrived. If you are using a Groupon you have to order from the dinner menu, which of course is approximately $10.00 more expensive. I have one Groupon left , I guess we will be going back. I had chicken & portabella mushroom, it was great. more

Horrible! Stay away! 2/26/2012

This placed was terrible - if I could give it negative stars, I would! When I came in, I waited for 5 minutes to be seated, even though I could see 4 employees around the corner laughing and talking to each other - they even made eye contact with me, but no one came over to seat me. I finally gave up and seated myself - I should have taken that as a warning to just go home. As soon as I was FINALLY served, I let the waitress know (an older asian woman) that I had a groupon - from then on, I was treated like dirt. First, The waitress refused to take the groupon, telling me it was not good for sushi - hibachi only. When I persisted that the groupon did NOT say it excluded sushi, she called the owner and proceeded to talk about me negatively in Japanese - she assumed that I don't speak the language and didn't know she was calling me "" cheap ***** lady"". and by *****, I mean racist slang that I won't repeat here on Yelp. Surprise - I know what you said, it's not only Asian people who speak Japanese! She finally took my order, and never came back until it was time to see if I left her a tip. The bartender ended up serving me my food, drinks and cleaning up. And, to boot, the sushi was sliced thinner than paper - for $3-5 per piece, it shouldn't be paper thin or as cheaply made as it was. I strongly recommend staying away from this place; I will not be returning! more

Awful! 12/10/2011

I brought a party of 6 (including 2 kids) to this restaurant and could not have been more disappointed. First of all, it took over 20 minutes for our drink order to be taken and another 15-20 minutes to actually get our drinks. The soup and salad came out 10 minutes after that. Before we could finish the salad, the chef came and started cooking. For a hibachi place, we expected a nice show for the kids. Instead, we got an extremely rushed through, burnt meal. The chef quickly cooked our shrimp appetizer, which amounted to 2 very small pieces of shrimp each. He then proceeded to cook our chicken and steak at the same time, both of which were as dry and burnt as meat could possibly be. After that, he cooked our veggies (probably the only decent part of what he cooked), and lastly he cooked our fried rice. Yes, if you caught that right, our fried rice came at the very end of the meal. Fried rice normally comes at the beginning of the meal so you can eat it as part of your meal. The chef cooked the egg first, which was burnt to a crisp by the time he threw the rice on top of it. There was also a minuscule amount of chicken in it. For the life of me, I have no idea how he managed to singe our fried rice during the 3 minutes or so he spent cooking it. Hey, and get this, after all of that, our sushi finally arrived (which, if you counted the minutes in this story, amount to approximately an hour after we first sat down)! Unacceptable!!! Complaining to the management did absolutely nothing. They seemed like, ""Okay. Pay the bill. Bye."" We were offered a slice of pineapple in compensation for our awful meal. I don't think we even heard a ""Sorry.” However, they did manage to say, ""See you next time."" Yeah right! If you like good food and good service please stay away from Domo 77. Stay home and order a pizza. It would be way more appetizing! more

Sushi and Teppanyaki options 6/11/2010

The food was good although not spectacular. My friend and I both ordered sushi at the sushi bar, though the sushi chef was not very helpful in deciding what to order. We came for lunch and there seemed to be hardly anybody in the restaurant at all. I ended up with a Rainbow Roll, and the fish was okay if not incredibly fresh. The sushi chef was very nice however and made us a complimentary dessert with fresh fruit and chocolate sauce. Pros: Nice sushi chef Cons: Fish is not really top notch more

my favorite restaurant in the WORLD!!!!!!!!!!! 1/26/2010

okay, whoever said that Benihana is better than this place probably prefers a Kia Sportage over an S Class Mercedes, because that is how these two restaurants compare...\r I have traveled the world, been on many continents, eaten dishes from cuisines all around the world. If I had to chose one ""last meal"" before I die it would be Domo's Filet & Lobster!!! Man, I don't know where to start with my description: The Filet. Better than at any other 'Prime Steakhouse' period. The lobster. They put this garlic butter breading (??) stuff on it- absolutely heavenly. My company used to take us to this place once in a while and I loved it every single time. Now, that we moved out of the Chicagoland area I don't get to go there as often, but I still have in on my speedial just in case... And now it is one of the 'classic Chicago things' we do whenever we get back in town for a couple of days: Go see a Cubs game, eat a decent hotdog (NOT at the game), go downtown, and yes, GO TO DOMO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Pros: best filet & lobster ANYWHERE!!!! Cons: no cons more

Domo 77 my favorite Japanese Steak House 11/28/2005

My son and I love the Garlic Shrimp and the fried rice is some of the best I've ever had. Always take my family my birthday where the birthday person gets a free dinner! Can't beat this place - even have great sushi as an appetizer! more

This is absolutely my favorite restaurant 9/15/2005

My wife & I have been to Domo 20-30 times in the past year. We've met so many people we now call friends at Domo. We typically go back to Domo around once a month with people we met there or friends we've introduced to Domo that love to go back. Great food, great price (filet & lobster for $30), great service, great drinks it is truly the place you go where everybody knows your name & karaoke, how can you go wrong. A great place for a date, a great place for the family (we have 3 children that love it) & a great place to meet people. I would honestly say that if you try it you will love it. There are only a few restaurants that I would suggest to friends, Domo is the first place I suggest to most. Steve food more

I'M WAAAIIIITTTIIIINNNNGGG!!! 1/18/2003

I would like to add my two cents with regards to this restaurant. Another person rated this restaurant in the negative, I would not give it that but would give it pretty close to negative. When compared to restaurants like Ron of Japan, Benihana or other Japanese restaurants in almost all categories this establishment was poor. Aside from the 50 minute wait, this was after confirmed reservations, the place where we were seated was crowded. The presentation from the chef when compared to the restaurants named above was substandard. It was made even worse when it was difficult to get someones attention to get a refill on a drink. However not all was negative, the steak was amazing. All in all I will not be going back to this place. Pros: Good steaks Cons: Disorganized, Poor ambience, Unclean more

My kids love this place! 10/7/2002

My experience at Domo was a very good one. In fact, both my 8 yr. old daughter and 11 yr. old son want their next birthday party here. The food was great and the chef was totally entertaining. The best part is, you get to dine with other people...a chance to meet and talk...a rarity these days. Unlike the other reviewer, we didn't have a reservation, but we made the most of the waiting time in the Sushi bar where the chef made my kids their first sushi ever. My wife and I recommend the garlic lobster. And wait till you see the onion volcano! more
