New Dali museum is a travesty 3/2/2011

The new Dali museum is a travesty. Sure it's pretty, and I'm pretty sure some self-serving individuals are pleased with this monument to themselves - it certainly wasn't built to glorify the awesome works of Dali. Only a tiny portion of this building is reserved for Dali's works, and those that are have his works displayed in a way that makes many of them unviewable. His large works are completely unviewable as they are displayed at foot level in cramped areas, so you can either walk up to within 4 feet of them (as most in this crowded place do) or stand at a distance and see the upper half of the paintings and imagine what might behind the heads and torsos of the people between you and these works. By comparison, the old space was a showcase for Dali and his works, the larger pieces strategically positioned to provide optimum viewing. The reason space is so cramped in this massive structure: only a portion of the third floor is available for showing his works, with the central stairway and mezzanine dominating the space. The entire first floor is dedicated to extracting cash in the form of Dali trinkets along with food and wine. If you are as disappointed as I am, stop by and mention this to those on the second floor which is entirely dedicated offices for the self-serving egotists who are responsible. This floor is their throne, sandwiched between the rubes below and the jewels stacked willy-nilly in the attic above. more

Surrealistically Wonderful 8/8/2002

One of the Jewel's of Tampa Bay! I only wish it wasn't so off the beaten path! Couldn't the City provide better access? Or better yet how about giving it a new home at the top of The Pier! Dali would have approved of the upsidedown pyramid!! more

What a find 6/26/2002

I attended a wedding in Tampa and had some free time, so we came here. It was a fantastic time. Standing in front of Dali's work, which stands to the ceiling, is something to remember. Then, it's good to step all the way to the other side of the room and take another look. You see difference things each time. more

Avida Dollars 5/16/2002

I went to visit a friend in Tampa years ago and my favorite part of the trip was going to this museum. It's so easy to forget that Dali is more than melting clocks and a wacky moustache. Bombarded by the staggering collection of work on display here, I was re-converted to the cult of Dali. Permanently. The 14 foot tall painting "The Discovery of America by Christopher Columbus" and a small portrait of his wife still linger in my mind. The only place likely to have a better, more comprehensive collection is the painter's own museum, the Teatre-Museu Dali in Figueres. Face facts: It's cheaper to go to Florida than Spain. Pros: Oils, Watercolors, Graphics Cons: Humidity more

Editorial

  • The Scene
This museum played a key role in transforming downtown St. Petersburg from "God's waiting room" into a tranquil but burgeoning center for the arts. The waterfront building holds the world's largest collection of works by the master of surrealism, donated mostly by renowned Dali collector A. Reynolds Morse.

    The Collection

Some of Dali's most famous works, including "Disintegration of the Persistence of Memory" and a holographic image of Alice Cooper, are on display. The delicacy and realism of some of his early works will surprise people who know Dali only as the creator of bizarre fragmented paintings. The museum also regularly displays related works by other artists. Past exhibits have included Picasso, Warhol and Rosenquist. Both cutting-edge and established artists are represented.
