High-quality Japanese antiques and ceramic crafts 10/2/2007

An installment of over 33 years, Ma-shi-ko Folkcraft is perhaps the last bright point in Japan Center, and one of few left in Japantown. The store is piled high with old and new pieces from Japan. Narrow walkways wind through stacks of beautiful antiques, tansu, tea accessories, dishes, viewing stones, ikebana vases, and much more. High quality Bizen, Hagi, and other types of Japanese ceramics may be found, including museum-quality tea bowls. Scroll paintings fill wall space in the back not covered by objects. Walk through several times to take it all in, there is much to see. The prices are good considering the craftsmanship of the items. Many unique pieces are offered, items found no where else in Japantown, and few other places outside of Japan or private collections. The owner is understandably unhappy with the direction Japantown has gone, with the sale of the mall to a developer. Save the money you would spend on the inauthentic food and cheap (and mostly non-Japanese) knock-offs throughout the mall, buy something to treasure for a lifetime and beyond. Pros: The only store in Japantown for superior new ceramics and unique antiques Cons: The owner seems a loveable curmudgeon, prices reflect the quality more
