Editorial review from Citysearch 3/28/2015

I have gone to Dr. Shoolman at Camino Pet Hospital on 5408 Walnut at Jeffery in Irvine since December 1998. He's a wonderful and caring vet. He and his staff are brilliantt. I breed and show Scottish Terriers and their care and health is very important for them as my pets and for the future health of their puppies. When I first went to him, he met me 6am Xmas Eve morning to do an emergency C-Section to deliver 3 puppies - all of which Finished their Championships and one went Best in Show. This is not a brag on my behalf, but to just tell people how committed Dr Shoolman is to the health and welfare of the animals in his care. Camino Pet Hospital is 15-17 miles from my house (depending on which route I go), but it is well worth the drive for a great vet and staff. Jacki more

Wonderful vets with excellent care. 5/10/2011

I drive 20 miles to take my dogs to Camino Hospital. They are very reasonably priced and take wonderful care of my animals. In all of the years that I have been coming here, they have taken great care to keep costs down while doing what is best and necessary for my pets. Dr. Shoolman always calls to check up on my dogs if they've been into the office for a problem (like getting into the trash and eating who knows what) to make sure that they're feeling better. Wonderful office, wonderful staff, I'd not take my pets anywhere else in Orange County! more

Knowledgeable and caring vets offering affordable services! 3/16/2011

Camino pet hospital is a fantastic choice for all of your veterinary needs! I have never found a more knowledgeable staff that was SO reasonably priced. Over the years I have had all kinds of treatments done at this vet hospital... dental work, c-section, spay/neuter, routine check ups, x-rays... you name it. I've had great experiences with each and every vet in the office. All of my animals received great care and recovered exceedingly quickly from each procedure they'd had done. I would never hesitate to use the services of Camino Pet Hospital and the only reason I would take my animals anywhere else, is in a case necessitating a specialist. more

Don't take your pet to Dr. Schoolan!!! 2/17/2011

Dr. Shoolman is a creepy doctor and is very offensive. He tried to smile, but plastic came across and the vibes this doctor gives is unsettling. I asked questions about my pets out of concern and his mannerisms and comments were so offensive, that you immediately know you are working with someone who is a walking time bomb ready to explode emotionally. I would recommend never taking any pets to Dr. Shoolman, keep looking for reviews on this doctor, he has a e-paper trail of negative comments about lack of professionalism, care, and inappropriate personality. more

Everyone at Camino is caring & nice, except Dr. Shoolman 1/18/2011

As several other people's reviews on this site have stated, they wouldn't recommend Camino due to Dr Shoolman. It's a shame that's the case, as everyone else besides Shoolman who works at Camino is nice, kind, & caring. I'd recommend everyone else at Camino Except for Dr Shoolman due to his behavior & actions & lack of care I witnessed, which was unsettling and kind of scary.\r . Dr Shoolman ultimately, is the one who runs/manages this place, and therefore it's his decisions when he's there, that direct the actions of this place, and he bears the responsibility of those actions. From what I witnessed, Shoolman is dismissive of, and in my opinion negligent with, his animal patients-the ones he's supposed to be helping:(\r I took my 7yr old cat to him, told him my cat was presenting w signs of an Infection, and not a disease (although my cat had been diagnosed at Camino w liver disease or a mass with probably no cure for the prior 7 wks), of which I was at the facility about once every 9 more

BEWARE OF THE KILLER VET DR. SHOOLMAN 6/30/2010

****BEWARE*** DR. SHOOLMAN WILL KILL YOUR DOG IF YOU GO IN FOR DENTAL WORK***** Pros: NONE Cons: Unprofessional and Disingenuous! more

Excellent and caring doctors 4/12/2010

I have been taking my pets to Dr. Shoolman and his staff since 1987. My first pet, a cat named Taby, lived to be 20 years old. Unfortunately, my dog Sandy got stomach cancer at 9 years old and had to be put down by Dr. Shoolman when she could no longer even stand up. Dr. Shoolman was very kind and caring during this time and allowed me to stay with my Sandy as long as I needed afterwards. I have 2 cats right now and both of them are cared for by Dr. Shoolman and his excellent staff. Pros: Professional caring doctors Cons: None more

talked down to 4/8/2010

we took our dog to dr. schoolman for a limp. he took xrays and said it was a slipped disc. we could see nothing of the sort when viweing the xrays. my friend had suggested the dog was limping from straining to go up and down the stairs in our house. sure enough, when we moved into a one-story house, the dog's limp went away. i should have paid my friend the $400.00 rather than to a vet who misdiagnosed my animal. Pros: close to home Cons: unknowledgeable more

VERY COMMON TO GET A BILL FOR SERVICES WITHOUT APPROVAL 1/22/2010

Please choose a different Vet if you can. I came for my dog's check up. Nurse takes my dog out for a Urine sample. And comes back 10mts later. Here comes a doctor I do not know (not the olddoctor we have been seeing). Anyways after the check up, she mentions "according to our ultrasounds we do not see any kidney stones etc. And I insisted on looking at the images (I am an ultrasound tech). These images were noteven taken the right way. You can not see the bladder clear, Kidney's were no where to be found. According to the Vet these images are not clear enough to shoe anystones etc. We can try next time for better shots. And I wasslapped with additional$140 for this ultrasound without any permission or approval. Staff memebers donot clearl tell you the charges either. You would know after show sign and look atyour summary. It's not worth it. Pros: Grooming services are good but not easily available Cons: You get charged for services not approved by the pet owner more

DON'T GO 1/2/2010

Started to go there years ago for my 1st free visit the doc was great I thing it's was doctor Mc maren or something like that but she left and then everything got worse and worse staff was very rude and it look like the only thing that mater is how mush you going to spend and if you are not willing to spend a lot you get treated like a peace of sh.......... I will never ever go back more

Best Vet in the County! 10/6/2009

I'm very overprotective and I've taken my dog to many, many vets from the Central Coast to Irvine. We even had a stint at acupuncture for her pinched nerve! My dog has had many minor and major surgery's in her 11 years and almost every Vet gave me the run around when it came to these tough times. As all of them would offer me multiple options for medicating and pain management ect.. I just want it straight. When I first meet Dr. Shoolman for a quote he came in hundreds less than my other vet and he gave me STRAIGHT ANSWERS and no B.S.. I feel that Dr. Shoolman provides the proper care and does not overcharge for what is not necessary. I honestly would not take my dog elsewhere as Dr. Shoolman has been extremely professional and straight shooter with me. Pros: They do not overcharge for what is not needed! more

They truly care 9/30/2009

I take my pets to Camino Pet Hospital and I will not go anywhere else. I love love Drs. Murphy and Fluent (I think she's a new grad)! They are always so knowlegeable and caring and never overcharge for their services. The receptionists are a little rude though and need some training in how to treat clients. Overall though, the prices are VERY reasonable and the doctors are excellent. I recommend Camino to all my friends/family. Pros: Love Drs. Murphy and Fluent Cons: the front staff needs training in customer service more

Our Trusted Pet Care Provider 9/26/2009

We've been taking our Morkie to see Dr. Shoolman since puppyhood. Dr. Shoolman can be gruff on his bad days, but you choose a vet because he's good with animals, not necessarily people, right? In any case, he's become much friendlier with us over the years. I suspect it's mostly because our dog is fit, active, and social. The doc seems to have a disdain for owners who allow their dogs to be overweight or timid. I'm not defending his very apparent air of judgmentalism, but I see it as yet another sign of how much he cares for your pet, if not for you. Pros: Good prices, excellent pet care Cons: Busy office, not the friendliest staff more

Okay experience 9/2/2009

Saw Dr. Shoolman's associate for my dog's stool problems and was disappointed at her bedside manners. She was unable to diagnose the root cause and gave us some antibiotics. After being on AB for two weeks and still no cure, we swiched over to Dr. Shoolman for a second opinion. He discovered that it was food allergy and my dog is cured. Dr. Shoolman is very knowledgable but I found him to be quite condescending. When asked questions, he would answer in a very demeaning way as to make me feel stupid for asking the question. If I knew all the answers, I would not need to pay him. Pros: Clean office Cons: Vet's manners more

Camino Pet Hospital 8/4/2009

Dr. Shoolman is an excellent Dr. He is caring, informative, and honest. So many Vet's today have become like used car sales people. Pros: Honest Advice, Honest Price more

Its an ok place 7/23/2009

I took my dog here a few times. Its an ok place but I was uncomfortable because on more than one occasion, the front receptionist has not been very friendly. She is sometimes condescending and seems to be having a lot of bad days and she wears it on her face. Pros: close to my home Cons: receptionist not friendly more

i love them! 11/20/2008

When I got my puppy 3 years ago he was very sick. I took him to Camion Pet Hospital beacuse it was the free visit from the pet store. Dr. Shoolman was the doctor I saw and he was very nice. He said I baught the dog sick and I would not have to pay anything. He made my puppy all better and made me feel comftortable! I have been going there since and have always requested to see Dr. Shoolman. I love that they mail reminders. I also like that you can have the doctor paged after hours in an emergancy and they call you back right away. Dr. Shoolman has also called to check on my puppy the following day to make sure he is feeling better. I even started taking my cat there. I live in Buena Park and drive my animals to Irvine for there vet! I love going there and would recommend it to anyone. Pros: Great staff! Cons: Parking can be hard to find SOMETIMES. more

Dr. Shoolman unprofessional 11/11/2008

Dr. Shoolman was very condescending with both me and my husband on many occasions. He criticized us for our concern over our dog's various health issues. He bashed us for allowing our dog to socialize with other dogs once or twice a week, following with "Why does he need to be around other dogs?" and "You DO know he WILL get sores in his mouth AND kennel cough." He never has. One time we asked Dr. Shoolman if our dog's weight was normal, and he replied "Yes, but his is not." and he pointed to my husband!! He had the audacity to criticize my husband's weight! Sure, my husband could stand to lose some weight, but what nerve to say something like that to your client's face! We are extremely disappointed with Dr. Shoolman, and would certainly not recommend him to anyone. more

it's okay...I expected more 5/20/2008

I went in to Camino Pet Hospital three times. The first time I saw Dr. Murphy and she was very friendly and was willing to answer questions even though she seemed to be very busy. The next time, they asked if I minded seeing the other vet, Dr. Shoolman(?) and I said sure. He was alright but he just seemed to be in such a hurry that he just got us out of there so fast we didn't even get a chance to really ask him our questions. The thrid time, my boyfriend went w/o me and he said it was the same thing, Dr. Shoolman was in a huge hurry (and it was a monday). My boyfriend had requested for him to write a letter stating that our puppy came with lateral luxating patellas (as Dr. Murphy had diagnosed) because the pet store said we need a letter from the vet and this will cover us if he ever needs surgery they will pay for part of it. If we don't get a letter we're pretty much screwed. Dr. Shoolman told my boyfriend he couldn't write a letter. I called back and left a message with Dr. Murphy instead, we'll see what happens. Pros: Dr. Murphy was very nice and personable, they are open on saturday Cons: Dr. Shoolman would not write the letter we need and was always in a hurry more

Your Pets Will Thank You 9/7/2007

You'll be very happy you've brought your pets to Camino Pet Hospital. My pets have received fantastic care from Dr. Shoolman and the office staff. They're also very good about postcard reminders when the pets are due for shots, etc. I'm a picky pet mom, and I highly recommend! more
