Based upon a recent experience, I recommend you not do business with Schwartz. We have purchased propane, bait, hitches for our vehicles, and rented multiple U-Haul trucks from this business going back to 1986. While we always found Mr. Schwartz reasonable and honest to deal with, our recent experience in October 2009 has changed that perception. Times must suddenly be bad for Mr. Schwartz since he now has joined less scrupulous U-Haul merchants who assess unfair refueling charges. We rented a truck from Mr. Schwartz and returned it after business hours and one day earlier than the contract required. My husband refueled the truck and left it in their parking lot at spot different than where he took delivery. Mr. Schwartz charged our credit card a fee for inadequate refueling citing the gas gauge was slightly less than what showed at pick up. The tank was not full at pick up, rather at the 3/4 mark and this was the level it was refueled to upon return. My husband offered to show Mr. Schwartz our gas sales receipt that proved we had filled the tank to it appropriate level (when vehicle miles per gallon ratings and gallons purchased are factored in.) Mr. Schwartz refused to listen and stated he would not adjust the bill. My husband and I suspect that this refueling fee was potentially a passive/aggressive response to my husband's previous refusal of the first truck offered to him by Mr. Schwartz. That truck was in very poor condition. My husband refused it with the explanation that a truck rented from Schwartz a few years earlier was in similar poor shape and we ended up stranded after the transmission went out. Since we would be driving farther than that trip, he wanted to make certain we had a reliable truck. Mr. Schwartz was visibly angered and irritated at my husband’s comment. We firmly believe he retaliated by assessing an inappropriate fee. Needless to say, our 23 year patronage of this business ended with that one action. The dollar amount involved is small, but the message he sent was huge. Mr. Schwartz, however, appears to care less. U-Haul has been blasted with class action lawsuits that decry this "fuel gauge" measurement practice as unreliable and a method for revenue enhancement by unscrupulous dealers who gouge customers. I do not believe Mr. Schwartz is unscrupulous, however, I would think someone of his standing in the Noblesville community would use better judgment in dealing with a long standing customer's complaint.
